Defending in Europe

660

As news of the goal deluge from the Bernabeu arrived last night it must have caused some reflection at Celtic. Real Madrid thumped Malmo, our eliminators, 8-0. Malmo are not, after all, this season’s surprise packages.

European football is an unforgiving environment, not just for the minnows. Roma, who are currently second in their Champions League group, lost 6-1 in Barcelona two weeks ago. That result came on the back of Bayern Munich taking a 0-5 lead inside 36 minutes in front of 70,000 fans in Rome in last season’s tournament. Bayern went on to win 1-7 in what was supposed to be a game which changed Roma’s ways.

Roma are a good team, currently fourth in Serie A, but their expansive tendencies have earned them humiliating results against teams capable of exploiting them.

Rule No. 1 in Europe is to be defensively disciplined. If you don’t have that aspect of the game figures out, you are as well not competing.

While John Collins was no doubt sincere in saying he could see tonight’s game far enough, he should be relishing the opportunity to test his defence against a European team. This is our last chance before next season’s qualifiers. It is a precious occasion to test tactics.

Thanks to everyone who has bought Winds of Change, and for the fantastic feedback on what was an incredible era to be a Celtic supporter.

    Its a shame we cant have this debate in a pub over a few pints (probably need more than a few)

    The reason’s why I think we have seen all there is to see

    When he joined he said he liked what he has inherited from Lennon and he wants to maintain it – he changed just about everything against Legia (we know the outcome)

    He said no more chips or fizzy drinks we will be faster fitter ??? we play a possession game mostly in our own half

    We lost to Legia Maribor they hit us on the counter attack ditto Malmo ditto Ajax ditto Fernabache

    We have failed twice to qualify for the CL (3 times counting the Legia debacle)

    We have not won a game in the Europa League

    We have not bought ONE player in 2 years that has made us better not ONE

    Finally my pet hate Scottish cup semi final – I know we were robbed but – start of the second half we are 1 nil up we have a corner – we have 10 men in their half – one ball out of defence and ICT player is going past our keeper – brought down the rest we all know

    Ronny is not the answer

    PS for clarity I imagine he is a wonderful human being a real nice guy a credit to his family and I would love a pint with him – but unfortunately this does not mean you can manage celtic

    Ronny might have. Norn Iron had the best squad in that group.

    Well, maybe Greece did, but they played so poorly that they lost to the Faroe Islands.

  4. JJ-I hope you are well,but i must respectfully disagree my friend.We are continually losing soft goals ,against teams from arguably worse leagues than the one we play in.Lack of game management (3-1 up v Malmo @ CP },baffling substitutions.The goals we lose are amateurish and 9 times out of 10,our own doing.RD can’t be held accountable for individual errors,but better coaching and not picking repeat offenders would be a help.We all want Ronny to succeed and make us a better team,but i can’t see any improvement in our style of play,tactics {1 up front},or substitutions.HH

  5. Jungle Jim, I am somewhere in the middle on Ronny, I agree that the Manager cannot be held accountable for individual errors like Efe’s howler against Fernabache. Also Gordon on last year’s form as distinct from this year’s form would have made a crucial difference.

    However it is the cumulative effect of 2 years of failures at European level that is the issue, we got a get out of jail card against Legia last year and still couldn’t make the Group Stages.

    We were 2 up what now looks like a poor Malmo team and blew it, we led Ajax twice away and were 2 up Fernabache and ended up with 2 draws which is all we have to show for our 5 group games.

    Yes we probably have been unlucky but when you keep being unlucky you start to think that luck has got nothing to do with it.

    We all will be a little wiser after tonight, hopefully things will go well but if we ship a heavy defeat look out the Negatonians are flexing their typing fingers as we speak.

  6. weebobbycollins on

    We really must give Ronny time to prove beyond all doubt that he is NOT good enough for us–and that means he should be allowed another attempt at Europe. If he fails again next season, then ok, thanks and good luck…but what if it all starts to click and progress is made? What then? Wouldn’t it be wiser to wait another season to make sure he is NOT the right man rather than going through another period of upheaval that would result in what? No guarantees remember. I would love to see so many msm doubters (and one or two (or more) on here) getting it right up them. Ronny, I’m sure is a learner and this has surely been the biggest experience of his life. I just want him to have a truly FAIR crack at the old whip…

  7. Perhaps PL et al have realised that the CL to a certain extent is fixed for the big boys and that key to that income is no longer as secure as it once was. On that basis we must move to a model that generates far more profit from players, a bit like the Dutch teams.

    I suspect that as long as we’re winning at least the league plus one other domestic trophy and the squad at the very minimum covers it’s own costs, then RD will remain in position for quite some time.

  8. West End of East End on

    67 European Cup Winners – Yeah, over a few pints sounds good, don’t think you would change my mind though :-)

    The problem Ronny has, is that he’s bought into us being a selling team, if we could keep a core team together for a couple of seasons we would maybe see what he’s trying to achieve. Buying Scott Allan, Ryan Christie, Armstrong & GMS as well as bringing through KT & hopefully young Nesbitt all looks promising to me. All good footballers with a brain…

    Civil disagreement breaking out in CQN, it’ll never last especially with a game on tonight…

    I agree on PL and Park – Im not proud of the fact but it was one of the things that excited me about Roy Keane (disaster I know we dodged a bullet) but PL and Park would of had some competition

    Anyway its for this reason that Im championing the Moyes option – as I believe Moyes will have a greater say than the likes of Ronny

    Im also well aware that PL decides and its for this reason that its not likely to happen

    Maybe just maybe Ashley was making kings live difficult so that he could get his 5 million back. Know he’s got it everything will fizzle out. Maybe not.

    I’m putting my money on Stokes being shown the door.

    What did Ronny actually achieve in Norway. 1 title in 6 years. Rosenberg, molde are the main team’s not Real Madrid or Barcelona.

  12. lennon’s passion on 10th December 2015 4:17 pm

    Depends if you think getting Inverness Caley to the title, while at the same time developing your youth and reducing the average age of the squad by about 3-4 years would be an achievement or not.

    I think it would, and it’s a reasonable equivalent.

  13. Lennon’s Passion, I’m not sure he has got 5 million back. The 5 million was the cumulative amount of a number of Loans, Daily Rag saying “That the first of the Loans” was paid back yesterday. I would wait & see until there is clarification of exactly how much was paid back.

  14. For the forseeable future, any Celtic manager will be tasked with:

    – Making a silk purse out of a sow’s ear;

    – Making lemonade out of lemons;

    – Applying lipstick to a pig;

    – Polishing a turd (failing that, rolling it glitter);

    – Teaching an old dogs new tricks;

    – Making omelettes without cracked eggs;

    – Making bricks without straw

    – Paddle out of a smelly creek without a paddle.

    RD hasn’t succeeded at the above, yet…

    67 European Cup Winners @ 4.15…I am no better a man than you sir, possibly much older and more patient, nothing more. I just want to make doubly sure before going through the ‘new manager’ process again. However, and it is a big however…I am more in favour of a MANAGER rather than a head coach which may not now be possible with Dermott/Peter at the helm. Football for football people and Administration for administrators.

    I cant speak for anyone else, but, personally, all I want from a Celtic manager is:

    1. he puts out a team that is fit enough to play for 90 minutes (last season, yes; this season, no)

    2. the defence doesn’t concede silly goals regularly

    3. the midfield supports the defence and creates chances for the strikers (no)

    4. he has a system which gets the best out of the players (no)

    5. he gets the players to buy into/play his system (again no)

    5. on a less astract level …. qualifies for the group stages of the CL more often than not (I think is a realistic goal), and puts together a team that is at least competitive at the EL level

    Football is meant to be about entertainment

    When was the last time we where entertained by Celtic?

    I’m trying to keep the faith with RD but square passing in our own half doesn’t do it for me I’m afraid

    We are no fitter than any of our opposition or its looks that way

    Anyway

    Although I believe you are one who would readily change his mind if confronted with reasonable evidence, I am afraid I am unlikely to be able to `spread a bit of holiday cheer…!`. My appraisal of Ronny is based upon MOST of the games I have seen at Celtic Park since he arrived and by comparison with those under the guidance of Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon. I prefer the games now. Sometimes, we struggle to break down a well organised defence and cannot find the telling pass ( Scott Allan might provide that) but, in the main, we create a multitude of chances . That we do not take them is not down to the style of play the Manager is introducing.

    To win the Treble is NOT an easy task yet now the MSSM want to label Ronny a failure if he does not achieve that.Both Cups are more or less as difficult to win without Rangers. The League is easier than pre-2012 but the treble is still difficult. Beginning to ramble a bit. My point is that Ronny`s record in Scotland is pretty good, the team is good to watch and I firmly believe that he and we will succeed in Europe. If we sack Ronny, I think we will stagnate.

    Two point 5s? Scandelous.

    I don’t disagree with you on many of those points. However, I believe that this Celtic manager and those that will follow him will work within parameters that are more conducive to disappointment than resounding success.

  21. mike in toronto on

    JJHS … a fair enough response pal. Like you, I am hopeful that Scott can be that ‘last piece of the puzzle’ that ties the team together. Hopefully, RD gives him a run to see what he can do.

    In the spirit of the holidays, I will send you a cyber egg nog (or pint, if you prefer).
