Despite success, current European levels are not stable for Celtic

567

In 11 days we will know our potential opponents for the first and second Champions League qualification rounds.  While earning the money available for Champions League qualification is the overriding priority, we also need Uefa coefficient points.

Should they progress, Celtic will be seeded for each of the four qualifying rounds, but they are in position to be bottom of the seed: five points below second bottom PSV Eindhoven, and four above unseeded APOEL Nicosia.

Our place in fourth spot in future years depends on who else qualifies and how successfully we replenish our stock of coefficient points.  We earned eight points from our Champions League/Europa League endeavours last season, with a six point season due to drop off next year.

Eight points from one season is a baseline for teams who wish to be seeded in the champions route, but it is difficult to imagine even a modest improvement without a significant pick-up in performances.  Chances of us winning two or more games in the group stage feel no more likely than the chances of us winning none, or of finishing bottom of the group stage – equal to our seeding.

The dirty wee secret of European football progress should be acknowledged.  Teams from small nations find it nearly impossible to progress through the group stage every year, much like on the international stage when betting on the World Cup, but those who manage to get there more seasons than not, tend to have financially difficult season, where they fail to qualify for the Champions League, but earn a significant haul of points in the Europa League, making subsequent campaigns a little easier.

Despite the general invincibility of the team domestically, I suspect the current levels of achievement in Europe are not stable.  We will have to improve, or there will be a season of retrenchment.

Kind of kills that post earlier that some Celtic fans don’t like protestants

    ================

    What’s that about ?

  2. being a protestsant has nothing to do with my dislike of dalglish, it was taking of murray money somthing a true celt would not have done and im sure sir kenny would like souness have known of murrays ways of cheating.

  3. It wasn’t you Dansa, Someone came on and said there is a large minority of Celtic supporters who didn’t like Dalglish and Strachan because of what they were. I find that nonsense.

  4. Good watch that. Interesting that Lenny, Ronny and Brendan all went out of their way to speak highly of Peter Lawwell.

    Aye it was good :-)

Talking of green, have a fair bit of metal gates and railings about the place and they are black just now, decided that green is a better colour so bought some on friday, painted the front gate and it looks amazing against the white walls, have also got some gold for the spikes and the whirls , that’s for next week :-)

  6. religion has no bearing on a players ability and as that other bigoted club found to their cost but as i said his faith has no bearing on why i dislike him how he could take money from murray rules him out as a true celt great imo.

  7. Listening(?) to the half-time summary of the Sweden v Peru game.

Two BIG guys in suits that look several sizes too small, and a much smaller blonde lady named Anna Brolin.

Think she’s married to an ex-footballer!

    HH!!

  8. I always thought that Ronny was at the wrong time for us, I supported him till the very end, pity some of the players didn’t, it could have been so very different imo.

Add in he was coaching with his hands tied all things considered he done a great job.

  9. Although to have achieved what he has he has to have a healthy ego, I get the impression Kenny is a bit of a reluctant hero. I think a lot of us, myself included, are guilty of projecting all sorts of stuff onto people who play and do well in the hoops, Liverpool seems to be his real spiritual home as a footballer. No problem with that, although I’ll never be happy with him for using his goodwill at celtic for the opportunity to earn as much money as your average european pga pro for playing golf during the john barnes season

  10. Yes I liked Ronny Deila too. Can’t help feeling there was some players not behind him esp. the 2nd. season.

Of course Armstrong is worth more than 4-5 million compared to some of the fees that are flying around darn Sarf for players who can’t string a few passes together consistently

Problem is he seems to want away and in January can sign a pre contract and we can’t really let that happen

Would like him to stay though

Just seen Twitter pictures of the house in Lenzie on fire, after being struck by lightning, thankfully no reports of anyone injured, still distressing though to see your house go on fire.

Pictures from the A9, incredible hailstorm, cars all having to go to off road, road completely white, hailstones massive.

  22. First half of Spain v Tunisia, all Spanish possession but Tunisia could be three up easily, hopefully they perform the same way against the brits and find a bit of accuracy in front of goal.
