Despite success, current European levels are not stable for Celtic

567

In 11 days we will know our potential opponents for the first and second Champions League qualification rounds.  While earning the money available for Champions League qualification is the overriding priority, we also need Uefa coefficient points.

Should they progress, Celtic will be seeded for each of the four qualifying rounds, but they are in position to be bottom of the seed: five points below second bottom PSV Eindhoven, and four above unseeded APOEL Nicosia.

Our place in fourth spot in future years depends on who else qualifies and how successfully we replenish our stock of coefficient points.  We earned eight points from our Champions League/Europa League endeavours last season, with a six point season due to drop off next year.

Eight points from one season is a baseline for teams who wish to be seeded in the champions route, but it is difficult to imagine even a modest improvement without a significant pick-up in performances.  Chances of us winning two or more games in the group stage feel no more likely than the chances of us winning none, or of finishing bottom of the group stage – equal to our seeding.

The dirty wee secret of European football progress should be acknowledged.  Teams from small nations find it nearly impossible to progress through the group stage every year, much like on the international stage when betting on the World Cup, but those who manage to get there more seasons than not, tend to have financially difficult season, where they fail to qualify for the Champions League, but earn a significant haul of points in the Europa League, making subsequent campaigns a little easier.

Despite the general invincibility of the team domestically, I suspect the current levels of achievement in Europe are not stable.  We will have to improve, or there will be a season of retrenchment.

In my opinion Broony has had 2 bad seasons one blighted with injury and one with a much more important thing than football, his sisters passing, I remember a very young Broony going head to head with Neil Lennon, then wee Lenny saying Scott reminded him of himself at a young age… that’s good enough for me :-)

Jimmynotpaul, Pollok beat Glasgow Perthshire 2 1 today so a Cumbernauld Pollok Central League Cup Final is on.

Perthshire ended up with nine men.

Another Northgate connection for the final, the mother of Pollok player , David Gormley , works there.

  11. The transfer window opened today, Brendan Rodgers, will be back up at Lennoxtown sometime next week, then hopefully we will get some truthful transfer news, not some of the rumours that have been posted ,since the middle of May, personally myself I think that a lot of our supporters, saying a Centre Back ,a Right Back, and possibly another striker,if Dembele leaves,or French Eddy, doesn’t sign for us,so we while see what happens in the next few seasons.

Former poster on here , Sydney Tim , posted up some footage on facebook earlier today of the Sydney CSC celebrations from Cheers Bar.

Willie Wallace and George McLuskey were the guests then a surprise appearance from the one , the only , Paul McStay , on stage during a question and answer session .

  13. Kev j ‘Only empty seats will bring equality and justice’. To take this argument to its logical conclusion the rebels will not have won until you have achieved a completely empty Celtic Park. Hh

Jimmynotpaul, according to the Perthshire twitter page, the final is this Thursday at Shettleston but heehaw on Pollok’s twitter about that being the venue.

I was one of those Posters my friend. I posted about three weeks ago that a deal has been done for Edouard, 4 years, £4 rising to £5 million. I stand by that, the only thing I could not say was when it would be announced. Now that the window is open and Personnelback next week, it should not be too long before it is announced.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

    Hi Ghuys, Salve salve ;-

Kenny Dalgish, First seen him playing against Carlisle 67 or 68, knew then he would be a star, funny enough though, the standout Celtic player that night during that 5 – 1 defeat was a young man playing right half, by the name of Mcgrain. Who as you know later be came a more than useful full back.. I have always esteemed Kenny as a player and I think he was absolutely right to make the move from Celtic To Liverpool at the time he did, for the progression of his career. Celtic was a team on a steep slide at that time.

However if any of you take or have taken the time to read his auto/ maybe biography, ther ie a line in it where he states that he “OUTGREW CELTIC”. Undoubtably he was a great player but he will never make a place in my greatest Celtic team. I wish him no harm and admire the work he has done for the Hilsborough victims but I do not celebrate him.
