Dilemma of youth development

1406

I know squad numbers are limited but I’m disappointed Eoghan O’Connell has not been retained. In his performances early last season he displayed the attributes of a modern-day footballing central defender. He has a future in the game and will do well wherever he goes next.

The perennial dilemma of youth development is that while teams want to improve performances NOW, they also need to leave space for worthy development squad candidates to grow into. Kieran Tierney got there, but the truth is, Celtic had been trying to sign a left back for year but were unable find anyone of the necessary standard. If we did, Kieran, Eoghan, would never have had the chance.

Many problems go unaddressed because the capacity to do so simply does not exist.

On my travels I came across the Scottish Football Supporters Association who have the value that unlike Supportes Direct, they are independent of the SFA and have a manifesto for better even handed governance and, as will be evident in the next few weeks have plans for taking that manifesto forward.

gives anyone interested in SFA reconstruction an indication that such a capacity is in the process of being built and I urge CQN posters to join the SFSA so that they learn of those plans and can take part in their execution.

The game is Scotland is bent. It is bent because no one polices it honestly.

Here is an opportunity to make change happen as opposed to discussing the many reasons that it doesn’t.

I reckon I am for giving up the betting, can’t seem to pick a winner these days, done good over the years and can see a pattern developing so may well give it a miss for the rest of the year.

I will do my usual pre season bets and see how it goes, but it’s looking like no more, I have been threatening for a couple of years now but always given in to the temptation, patterns-trends are not to be scoffed at.

“and the austerity predicated by the media was a factor.”

It was not just a media fabrication. It was a self admitted fantasy (obviously admitted after the referendum loss). And how do you offer respect to a party that lies so glibly about the economy? If they had campaigned on the basis of “we offer Independence but the financial road will be very bumpy and we will be, for a period, a poorer country”, I would have respected the honesty and, if they could be more honest about that and other things, I could have been interested. Because I don’t care if it is Scotland alone, or Scotland within the UK, or Scotland within a GB Republic, or Scotland within a European Union, I would still be interested in promoting social justice more than I was concerned about where the delineation lines of countries are drawn.

“Many on here seem to think that the SNP Manifesto was the destination.”

No- that point was dealt with by my “pig in a poke” comment. The SNP have been offering Scottish Independence since the late 20s or early 30s- thier various manifestoes throughout the past 85 years have offered the same thing. Yet it has only become a Celtic supporting orthodoxy in the past 20 years or so. Most of us who were aware of the offer, throughout those years saw no reflection of ourselves in that offer. And the Celts who joined the drive in the last 20 years or so have striven to present this as an equivalent of the Irish struggle, a comparison that SNP loyalists would reject and, from which, they would distance themselves greatly. The reaction from the independence movement to Jeanette Findlay tweeting “Tiocfaidh ar la” should speak volumes about how misguided that perception is. If they wanted to reach a position where they were ofering a Republic or a party dissolution shortly after Independence was won, they would have done so. They didn’t because they had no intention of going there and the fellow travellers and entryists that allied with the SNP run Yes movement were believing that they could achieve, in some unspecified way at some unspecified date, an outcome that the main movement did not want. They had no intention of letting this Celtic supporting tail wag this Tartan dog.

As you say only one country was offered a referendum choice to leave the UK. That country was Scotland and it said no. Wales did not show enough enthhisiasm to even get asked the question. And the Irish were never going to be offered that outcome in a vote early in the 20th century. Only by the blood sacrifice of the Easter Rising and the violent repression that the UK (not just England) visited on these rebels, during a time of World War, would that unity of desire for Irish Independence, at that time, have increased and hardened.

There is no blood sacrifice in Scotland. There is no repression. We can revolt against English arrogance and the lack of respect they give to our football teams but that is a poor basis on which to form a unified national sentiment.

The Unionist groupings your countrymen face in the North of the Island are nothing like the “Unionists” that you jibed about in order to hit back at ernie lynch. And my father, brother and friends who made these choices are insulted when anyone, yourself included, use that insult as an interchangeable term for UK supporters in NI and those in Scotland or Wales.

That was my main point and one you, largely skirted round.

I am lucky enough to have a big family and now even luckier to have an extended family the best Sevconians you will ever meet :-)

As I have probably mentioned before March 2008 my hero passed (my mum) just a few weeks before Tommy Burns who she loved, anyway my now now wife was just my burd back then and she was petrified of my mother, and before my mum passed we told her Miss GFTB was due due in September, so a few months after her gran had passed, I would have loved my mum to have met her but sometimes the pain is that bad you are glad when their pain is over……. Anyway my scary mum loved my Mrs and took her side over me every day of the week….. Life can be shoite at times but am afraid like Celtic & family the good times make the bad/sad times bearable……. And just now we live in great Celtic times :-)
