Dilemma of youth development

1406

I know squad numbers are limited but I’m disappointed Eoghan O’Connell has not been retained. In his performances early last season he displayed the attributes of a modern-day footballing central defender. He has a future in the game and will do well wherever he goes next.

The perennial dilemma of youth development is that while teams want to improve performances NOW, they also need to leave space for worthy development squad candidates to grow into. Kieran Tierney got there, but the truth is, Celtic had been trying to sign a left back for year but were unable find anyone of the necessary standard. If we did, Kieran, Eoghan, would never have had the chance.

Thanks for the reply, running late.

It’s my view that a clear opportunity for leadership within the ‘Celtic Community’ has been lost and that was a mistake.

The Scottish people have demonstrated a rejection of Tory policies over a number of years.

Despite the Scottish people’s preferences Tory rule has caused widespread harm to the poorest and most vulnerable in Scottish society. Would independence have led to austerity? Possibly? Instability? Possibly?

Would it have been a price worth paying to exit the Union and avoid the shambles of Brexit, the DUP running our affairs, and Scottish soldiers involved in conflicts of war that don’t concern us?

Would it have been worthwhile to try and run the country where the poor and vulnerable might be treated with some dignity? And having some chance of actually achieving that?

(Look at the voting trends among the Scottish electorate.)

I know many don’t have faith in the SNP but they would have had to face the electorate of Scotland. Why do many think that after Independence, that’s the Constitutional position wouldn’t have changed? It would have evolved and changed over time. Surely the SNP had to devise a manifesto that was likely to attract voters from across the political spectrum? For example pro Monarchists.

With the rejection of Independence the Union was endorsed and the unsatisfactory situation persists.

Having voted to remain in the UK, the consequences are the consequences. Arlene and the DUP will be in Downing Street on Tuesday to lend their support to the 13 Scots based Tories and Theresa May.

Why do posters continue to talk about ‘blood sacrifice’? Surely this is simply common sense as a means to end the imposition of unwanted governments and policies upon the people of Scotland. It’s not about an armed struggle.

London almost left without a shot being fired? Maybe we just lack self confidence and belief?

David Cameron’s arrogance put the ball on the penalty spot for Scotland and for whatever reason Scotland didn’t take the opportunity.

Having put the ‘Scottish question’ to bed Cameron then attempted to put the Eurosceptics to the sword and here we are.

Although I do accept that many voters made that choice with a heavy heart. Unfortunately it is what it is. A Unionist vote with all of the unfortunate consequences.

Would it have been a price worth paying to exit the Union and avoid the shambles of Brexit, the DUP running our affairs, and Scottish soldiers involved in conflicts of war that don’t concern us?

We would not have avoided Brexit. The DUP will not be running affairs- that’s a bigger load of scaremongering than the No side were ever accused of in IndyRef1. And it’s pure speculation that Scots soldiers will never go to war again. Denmark are independent- are they not fighting in US foreign wars?

Why do many think that after Independence, that’s the Constitutional position wouldn’t have changed? It would have evolved and changed over time.

Over what time? For those of you who still big up the equivalences of the Irish and Scottish situation- look at the make up of “post-independence” Irish governments- are they not, largely a succession of FF and FG governments, both parties which broadly represent Civil War factions? And that has lasted to the present day. What makes you think SNP would fade away or dissolve itself? It is both unlikely and unusual for an Independence winning party to give up power voluntarily.

Having voted to remain in the UK, the consequences are the consequences. Arlene and the DUP will be in Downing Street on Tuesday to lend their support to the 13 Scots based Tories and Theresa May.

Those consequences have yet to hapen. The consequences are unknown. And we both believe, with due cause, that this “consequence” is likely to be very temporary.

And consider the consequences not yet seen- I might have missed the first Corbyn govt., if IndyRef1 had said Yes. The irony of an SNP coalition of rightists, centrists and centre-leftists looking quite anaemic against the Westminster equivalent of a Corbyn government seems to escape those who only saw an inevitable leftist Scotland and a rightist rUK. If you only imagine the negative consequences, you will only see one side of the picture. Whether we said Yes or no, those people who this year voted in 13 Tory MPs in Scotland would still be here. This country returned 50 out of 72 Tory MPs in 1930 and 36 out of 72 in 1955. These things happened in my lifetime not in ancient history and they can happen again. Anyone looking at elections from 1997 to 2015 inclusive (5 elections in all with either 0 or 1 MP) would thinks Scots Toryism was finished. 2017 shows it is not and it may make even further progress. I don’t swallow the myth of Scots otherness- this country can vote left, centre or right, based on prevailing economic circumstances and political trends, just as any country, including Ireland, might do.

London almost left without a shot being fired? Maybe we just lack self confidence and belief?

Aye- words from the worlds of advertising and spin. Would independence make us more handsome and our sexual organs more powerful? I doubt it. There are self confident Scots and there are self confident Irish people. There are unconfident Scots and unconfident Irish folk. and none of them turned out that way because of the nature of their government or the status of their country. If I believed I would improve myself by a divorce from Engand and Wales, would I become a more confident Glaswegian by divorcing from Edinburgh? Would I become a more confident Southsider by divorcing from those north of the Clyde. I’d end up separating myself from the oppression of living with my family if I believed that nonsense.

Unfortunately it is what it is. A Unionist vote with all of the unfortunate consequences.

All governments and national arrangements are unions. Those voting for a Unified Scotland are unionists- lowlanders allied with highlanders, mainlanders with islanders, and East side with West. If I am going to have to accept the Unionist jibe with the overtones of NI politics that it brings, and it is meant to bring and hurt, then the Independence crowd will have to accept it too. John Donne was right- should I tell him he was a Tim Unionist?

Thanks for that chat. No offence intended, an emotive subject.

I like the chat and agre it is emotive. But it is also, sadly, offensive, whether intended or not, because it is meant to lump us in with that NI crowd- what else could it mean?

    The National.

A SHELL-SHOCKED Stuart Armstrong was still agonising last night over his part in the late Harry Kane goal which deprived Scotland one of their most famous victories.

While a number of errors conspired to give England their stoppage-time equaliser – Charlie Mulgrew lost the England striker entirely from Raheem Sterling’s cross and Craig Gordon could certainly have been more decisive in coming from his line – the Celtic midfielder needed little reminding that the attacking position would never have come about had he fed the ball to the breaking Chris Martin on his left rather than Leigh Griffiths on his right, or alternatively simply shelled the ball into row Z.

“Yeah, I know,” said Armstrong. “You make decisions in game. It was really late on and, honestly, tiredness comes into play.

“I’ve seen Griff make a run – and it was a poor pass,” he conceded. “In hindsight, I should probably just have shelled it into row Z. A number of things have to happen for a goal – you can never tell what phase of play is going to lead to what – but I probably should have just cleared the ball. It’s just one of those things.

“When I saw the ball hit the net, my feelings were honestly just total disappointment. We were so close to three points. To end up with one, you know, it’s just hard to take. The emotions of the game, being one-nil down and Griff hitting two unbelievable goals to get us back in the lead with so little time remaining … it’s hard to know what to say. To concede is disappointing, to say the least.”

Armstrong deserves a better fate for his break-out season – which harvested 17 goals, numerous assists and an invincible domestic treble – than to be remembered for his last kick of the campaign being a poor one.

No Scottish player has covered more ground this season and, when the disappointment has subsided, there will be plenty for him and the rest of the Scotland side to be proud of from this display. Four wins – away to Lithuania, at home to Malta, at home to Slovakia, and away to Slovenia – could yet be enough for second place and a play-off berth, even if Scotland now require England to do them a favour or two along the way.

“It was still a draw with a good team,” said Armstrong. “It says a lot about where we are, how far we’ve come, that we were disappointed with a point against England.

“There is certainly a lot to build on and a lot of confidence to take into the next game. Can we win the next four? I don’t see why not. We’ve hopefully given the fans that belief that we can do it. It means so much when they are behind us, as well.

“It gives us the extra impetus to take something from the game.”
