Dingwall determines league outcome

516

Ross County are a point off a European spot, a gap that has been narrowing for months.  Their last six games have seen wins over St Johnstone, Motherwell, St Mirren and Aberdeen, a draw with Hearts and a solitary defeat, at Celtic Park.

County were points adrift at bottom of the table as recently as December, having picked up just three points from their opening 10 games.  They are now a team on what looks like an inevitable march to European football next season.  So yes, we have a proper job to do on Sunday.

In the event Celtic emerge from season 2021-22 as champions, two added-time goals at Dingwall can be regarded as having an enormous bearing on the outcome.  In December, with Celtic drawing 1-1 and reduced to 10 men, Tom Rogic dinked a cross high into the County six-yard box, where Anthony Ralston rose, salmon-like to head home in the 97th minute of play.

Celtic went into that round of fixtures four points behind, the prospect of further slippage felt ominous with so many difficult fixtures ahead.  The remarkable recovery told us lots about this group of players and their never-say-die attitude.

The other significant game at Dingwall was, of course, Newco’s visit there a month later.  I watched the highlights that night, County were poor, conceded three and could have shipped a few more.  Newco should have won the game comfortably, but a combination of lax defending and dreadful goalkeeping kept the match alive until County conjured up a 96th minute equaliser.

History is made in moments like these.  News that Josip Juranovic is missing for the game gives Anthony Ralston his Dingwall stage again, horses for courses, leaps to mind.  Just as important will be the fitness of Giorgos Giakoumakis.  The Greek scored his second hattrick of the season in the aforementioned recent County defeat to Celtic – another horse for the County course.

Expect the pitch to be hard, bumpy and probably trained on today.  Defending will need to be assured, passing from the back will be more risky than normal.  Still, Celtic will travel with a point to prove.  Expect another away win.

Drouthy Neebours is the home of the Largs CSC. Great pub to watch Celtic games.

Aye there’s nothing better than watching your grandkids wearing the Celtic colours and enthusing about the team and the players.

  3. One of the things that did annoy me about the post break fixture list is how Sky Sports, and lets face it the SPL has little or no say in these matters, is how it completely fails to promote the actual league itself. Apart from one game of course, the Old Firm fixture. That is all that matters to them. True, they bowed to pressure in moving the Motherwell – Rangers game from today to yesterday, to give them more of a chance in the EL, but there was always a chance they would make it through to the semi-final, so why schedule it for the Sunday in the first place? Indeed why schedule all the top six for today and the bottom for the Saturday? Answer, the EPL is all, apart from the Old Firm that is. A 5.30 kick off at Celtic Park yesterday against Hearts or DU would have been an attractive fixture to televise, but would have clashed with Brentford. Likewise, the midweek fixture at a packed out Celtic Park, no lets go to Dundee. And as pointed out on here, why with Celtic playing three games at home are we playing our first game away in Dingwall on a Sunday? The answer my friends is contempt for not only Celtic supporters, but for Scottish football in general.

3 of our last 4 games are at home. I think that’s a massive advantage to us.

If they wanted to hurt us with an away game today, surely the obvious game would have been Dundee United at Tannadice instead of Dingwall.

Cheers for info Tom we will head to Drouthy’s for the game HH 🍀🍀

  6. Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Duncan, , Ryan and Kirsty. There will be one very proud father and father in law looking down on you both.

Not so much about hurting us Tom, but more about failing to use the final games in a way that might help promote the SPL as a football entity. And our home games as part of that. As stated, why no late afternoon match on a Saturday, the Wednesday fixture at Celtic Park? Wait, I’ve already answered that question.

Hope we enjoy the game, Dingwall or no.

100% sure Sky chose the fixtures for the SPL. No question about it. Infills for the EPL.

  9. Game day, every player must focus on his own job and do it to the max, take the chances we will create and we will be fine, no distractions no pressure crap, get it done by following your manager’s instructions, get it done Celtic.

  10. The huns use tape to cover the league sponsors during interviews and we worry about giving them 700 tickets.

    absolutely 100% correct .

  12. Is there any restriction on the price you can charge away fans?

£1,967 a ticket would be about right, and £1,888 for the restricted view seats.

    Good money for the Club.

I watched the highlights of THEIR game on Sportscene this morning. Neither the presenter nor pundits said anything about the penalty. That confirmed for me what Tom Mc G and SFTB said yesterday. It wasn`t a penalty.

  16. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Our last 5 games are

    Ross County away

    Old Firm home

    Hearts home

    Dundee United away

    Motherwell home

Using the same previous fixture this season as a benchmark ….

At home, Celtic comfortably defeated Old Firm, Hearts and Motherwell to nil.

    Likewise Dundee United at Tannadice.

Celtic had a man controversially sent off before defeating Ross County 2-1 in injury time.

    Are the SPFL at it?

I suspect we’ll never know hence the conjecture on here and elsewhere.

    Three FACTS though are incontrovertible

    1. The SPFL set the 5 game schedule

    2. Celtic start that schedule with, from recent evidence, their most difficult game.

    3. When that game finishes Celtic will have played 16 home, 18 away.

Make of those facts what you will.

  17. Tom McLaughlin on

Never a penalty in a million years. The referee is a tit. Sorry, the referee is at it.

  18. Tom McLaughlin on

    BACK TO BASICS

I cannot agree that Ross County away is our most difficult game.

Next Sunday is our most difficult, followed by Hearts then Dundee United.

I’d say Motherwell is our easiest game.

A month ago we thumped Ross County 4-0. Today is the second easiest game we could have got.

    All on paper of course.

  19. Tom McLaughlin on

There is no way a TV company dictates the post-split fixtures. The SPFL sets the fixtures and dates. Sky then choose which fixtures they want to televise and negotiate revised kick-off times.

  20. Greenpinta,

Yep,zero, zilch tickets.First game they gave us none. What were the repercussions, zero, zilch. They follow no rules, banned 2 of the SPFL sponsors,,so far nothing done.We had the best excuse,if we needs one with the broken bottles on the pitch, and staff needing stitches. What kind of a mealy mouthed, cap doffing Board have we got?.

All this, and the SPFL bend over, and accommodate them with a game switch.

    Ass lickers the lot.

What an opportunity to get it right up the scum.thrown away.Disgusted.

  21. Nonsense about Sky picking the fixtures.Jeezo, some people never happy. What fixtures do you think would have been better?.No matter what, there would have been a moan.3 home games from last 4,shocking !!!!!!!!.

  22. Keevins, old Shoogly Shug on this morning talking nonsense about” Bottle”.

Think its some of the fans who lack it.

    3-0 today.

  23. Tom McLaughlin on

Celtic have given Old Firm FC zero tickets for next Sunday’s game. A few weeks ago they announced a limited sale of tickets for the game. These were for seats normally set aside for away supporters.

  27. Celtic have given old firm 780 tickets.

Hun blogs all discussing how unfair they are distributed to the support.

And real infighting that if they want to get the full old old firm 7000 experience they are going to have to let tims back in.

Even funnier they manage to blame Celtic and lawwell for starting it.
