Dundee United 0-1 Celtic

940

Celtic did enough in the opening 16 minutes to put this game beyond Dundee United but only managed to score once, an excellent effort from Gary Hooper, before United tightened up and made a contest of the game.

Georgios Samaras sprung past the United defence inside the first 30 seconds and squared the ball across the six yard line but Stokes arrived a split-second late to convert. That signalled a period of relentless Celtic pressure as the home team found it impossible to get out of their own half or hodl any kind of possession.

Gary Hooper controlled a long clearlance inside the centre circle on 12 minutes before knocking the ball square to James Forrest, who had space to exploit.  Forrest drove forward before returning the pass to Hooper inside the box.  The Celtic striker turned outside Gunning before driving a shot low inside Dusan Pernis’ right had post to open the scoring.

Celtic continued to press forward with Forrest again involved in their most dangerous moves.  The young winger threaded a through ball to Anthony Stokes on the edge of the area before racing past the defensive line to meet the return pass on the volley but his shot struck Pernis.

Give-and-go football was proving effective for Celtic and on 41 minutes Cha Du-Ri played a one-two with Forrest but could not convert his shot.

Celtic were so dominant in the first half their only real concern must have been why they were not further ahead but the second half proved to be more of a contest.  Dundee United’s passing was poor all afternoon but Celtic slipped to their level, frequently succumbing to unforced errors.  The visitors were never in any trouble defensively but Neil Lennon decided to shake things up in midfield, and substituted central defender, Glenn Loovens, pulled Victor Wanyama back and brought Scott Brown into midfield.

The subsequent change, bringing Ki on for Stokes gave Celtic more athleticism and meant that the final few minutes, which are often tense when defending a one goal lead, were contested almost exclusively in the United half.  Fraser Forster had a few catches and the odd punch but had a relatively easy afternoon.

I understand that, so did MWD get you thinking that you may have the wrong person?

I did ask you about 4/5 hours before MWD’s post, to provide some evidence that I’ve been calling cqn’ers huns all of last week, you choose to mention MWD’s post but not my earlier request, do you understand that it shows a lack of respect towards me.

I think you know you posted to the wrong person, so why don’t you just admit the truth?

SINCE they lost Steven Naismith a month ago, Rangers have scored seven times in five games. Three of these strikes have come from the penalty spot and two in the form of own goals.

The victory over Dunfermline that allowed the champions to taste victory for the first time in three outings relied on both their methods of recent times for Manufacturing Goals.

  14. petec, re youre last post I’m not sure which post you refer to re Paul67 and Europe, but my tuppence worth is that Europe is beyond us just now, it has been since the Seville/ Mon years, this is when the CFC board had new instructions from the major shareholder to downsize as the move to the EPL wasn’t happening.

Our time will come again in Europe petec, we have to bide our time, nurture our young players and support our young manager, we need to ascend in the SPL to the stage where the MIB, the SFA etc are irrelevant, then we can ….. slowly, build a team for Europe.

It’ll take time, thats what I’m saying.

As I’ve asked before can you re-post where I “called cqn’ers huns all of last week” thanks, ps I think thats 4 times I’ve asked since about 2:30pm approx yesterday.

re you’re apology, can I ask if you’re apologising because you got it wrong and picked on the wrong cqn’er? did you actually mean another CQN’er? or was it that after checking back over last week for my invisible posts, you don’t have any gripe with any CQN’ers at all and just want to curry favour in some way (or get noticed) by attacking someone on CQN at random?

I think you’re post should AT LEAST mention/ reference the comment you made below, given that post I’d say you’re apologising because you’ve fecked up, but not because you’ve slandered my character on this website!

I would not Rule out the 4, especially as Neil lost out last season and had to come through what he has done.

If we can manouvre ourselves to the 1/4s then we will be amongst the favourites.

We Genuinely have a chance of getting all 4, Especially as we have such a young squad that has such an Amazing Manager that has yet to be recognised.

Neil was party to that, Neil has taken on this role with the restrictions.

I happen to think the League will be finished relatively early this year also which makes my comment a lot easier to throw out there.

Neil obviously wants the League before Europe but there is no doubt, his young players learn little playing Crap players regularly.

I hope we get into the knockout stages Big Style because the age of these young players means they will improve immeasurably in so many ways.

  22. Tom McLaughlin on

Great result at Tannadice, especially coming as it did after a tough Europa League encounter, and given our recent history of setbacks in the wake of European ties.

After a terrific first-half, I wasn’t surprised that we slackened off a bit second-half, although I never once felt we were in danger of dropping points. It certainly wasn’t as nervy as previous single-goal victories.

Looks like Hooper is well and truly back to his best. I hope we can get Commons back to last season’s form as well, and with Scott Brown back and Izzaguire edging closer to a comeback, it’s looking good for the run-up to the 28th.

    Hail Hail.

  23. SoS did Sammi dress ye that day, ye did look fine and dandy in amongst us ruffians?

petec, I see what youre saying but although we have a large squad its not large on experience or talent IMO, if we get an injury to one of our two strikers (and we will) and a few midfielders eg Victor or Kayal then we’ll struggle in Scotland never mind Europe. I mean the previous words in the understanding that we will have our players hacked down and penalised at every fabricated opportunity, we will struggle with the pool we have in Scotland, IMO Europe is a distraction…… next year mi amigo!

If we got an injury to a striker I would not be concerned in the slightest. I cannae believe we are still playing 2 strikers, it is wrong. I like the way Stokesie has applied himself this season and he has done well but we need to add Real Quality to the front line, quality that will run away from DU defenders when it is needed.

We have a Midfield that is Worthy of a Celtic Midfield, That is all so far. ;) Work in progress. The Midfield is where you control Everything, especially Rangers games.

Neil knows this, time to add a Monster player up front IMO……

    And he definitely will.
