Edouard pushed out Celtic transfer record

911

Celtic have activated a clause in their loan deal for Odsonne Edouard (20) with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player on a four-year permanent contract.  The deal will cost the club an initial £4.5m but the add-ons which follow will soon make the deal the club’s highest transfer fee paid.

To give some perspective, Celtic last broke their transfer fee record with the £6m purchase of Neil Lennon in 2000.

Watching Odsonne develop during his loan period has been an education.  Brendan Rodgers put Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths on the bench to allow Odsonne the game time he needed to grow.  His early-season rustiness was history by March, when he came off the bench when Celtic were down to 10 men at Ibrox, brushed aside what defences there was, to score a memorable winner.

The last player to match our record transfer fee was John Hartson in 2001.  Like John then, Odsonne is third choice striker, so the work does not stop here.

Great business, well done all concerned.

I am obviously wrong here, but in the deep recesses of the old grey matter I seem to remember that the bold David had an affair and it was plastered all over the media and one of the titilating bits was he and his lover used to suck each others toes for a turn on…yip, it boggled mi mind :-)

  5. Up like a bird on

No reason or logic to post this, but it’s just something that gets right on my nerves(ti*s)

Why does , if when an opposition player who is either (A) Feigning

    (b) His teams players are waving their arms around for you to knock the ball out in disgust as you are being unsportmanship (obviously you are in an advantageous position) not knocking the ball out play because one of their players are injured?while you are in an advantage position!! ….

    Why the F*$ck does ie

The Celtic player not pass the ball to the opposition player,to knock the ball out of the side of the park when it is THEIR player who is disadvantaged if it is that serious a situation, and if they dont do it, it is then passed unto them as unsportmanship ?

I might be being naive here and its young men trying to get a one upman ship on another human being.. but at some stage there should be a certain level of trust and respect between fellow athletes ??

I find it infuriating when there is a certain un level playing field through feigning ..pass the buck Celtic and make the opposition put the ball out of the field when it is in an attacking position….

    As KEVJ says ..be cute

Interesting article. I did not even know that the coach was considering dropping him for one of the more journeymen midfielders.

The one point I would disagree with were the reasons offered for Tom’s early difficulties with Celtic. It was not down to being played wide or “expected” to track back (Brendan has not given him a pass on those duties and Tom’s improvement started before Brendan came).

Tom had to toughen up from the less physical world of futsal in order to thrive at the 11 a side game. He had to learn better ball protection skills as, like Nakamura before him, he was easily dispossesed if he was met by a defender before he had the ball under control. Like Naka, if he had the ball tamed, he can make a fool of any defender that dives or barges in.

It is Tom that has improved and not his Celtic coaches who have suddenly woken up to a genius which was not always there. In fact, many Celtic supporters would have driven him to the airport themselves as he was one of those much derided “projects”.
