Edouard pushed out Celtic transfer record

911

Celtic have activated a clause in their loan deal for Odsonne Edouard (20) with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player on a four-year permanent contract.  The deal will cost the club an initial £4.5m but the add-ons which follow will soon make the deal the club’s highest transfer fee paid.

To give some perspective, Celtic last broke their transfer fee record with the £6m purchase of Neil Lennon in 2000.

Watching Odsonne develop during his loan period has been an education.  Brendan Rodgers put Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths on the bench to allow Odsonne the game time he needed to grow.  His early-season rustiness was history by March, when he came off the bench when Celtic were down to 10 men at Ibrox, brushed aside what defences there was, to score a memorable winner.

The last player to match our record transfer fee was John Hartson in 2001.  Like John then, Odsonne is third choice striker, so the work does not stop here.

Great business, well done all concerned.

What a wonderful game that was. Lovely to watch. Portugal used to be delightful on the ball, but soft. No more.

Some of the football Spain played tonight was stellar.

If the final is half as good as that I’ll be happy.

Aye,Chris would be more than adequate-to say the least!

    Some left foot on him,but…

I cannot recommend signing anyone who has got me kicked out of a pub.

    As you know*

  6. Why do many suggest

Hayes and Bitton can move on ???

Both versatile, offering the team flexibility of positions,

and good squad players for SPFL

Both unfortunate with injuries, playing for us, give them a break

Also happy to see Ryan Christie being given a chance, talented Bhoy

Then with Lewis Morgan our options are good

  7. De Vries, Gamboa, Allen & Compper can all go

So a new CH and Right back needed, that’s it

Oh, and John McGinn ??, who we should have signed 2 years ago for nothing

    Hail Hail

Got kicked out of a Wetherspoons pub in Cheltenham because Chris had ordered a J2O and couldn’t prove he was over 18.

First time I’d met him, that’s how to make an impression!

  9. Welcome Eddie for a second time, tho this time it’s for real and for feck all, we have to thank Pedro for sticking a whopping sell on for VvD, so in effect Eddie is a bonus, now go and spend some of the £millions we have sloshing about the bank account, the balance sheet can’t score goals nor can it defend, you know it makes sense Pedro.

As an add on, we still need a quality middy who can spray passes around for fun, I would go for Ki, he is on a freebie as well, he has matured into a quality footballer.

  10. Great to get Eddie on a permanent deal.

  11. If Moussa does sign an extension, for the life of me,I can’t see Brendan playing with one striker next season. We could be in for a total change of tactics .3-4-3.Cannot see Celtic laying out this kind of cash for whichever player sitting on the bench.I would be astonished also,if any of the two players would be happy with that.

Wow, lovely post. Think I’ve got something in my eye…

  13. I think, in the Eddy deal that the price was 10m Euros and PL has got us a deal that we’ll pay the rest in instalments when he plays 50 games, 50 goals, 1st international cap etc….if that’s correct Celtic have got some deal.

If there is any truth in the Moussa extension story then next season and beyond could be extra special for goals and individual records if Brendan played both

I still think JMcGinn is a certainty to sign next week but I don’t think we’ll get a centre half…the players we have all play for decent international teams and I think that’s our level. These guys are all really good players, really big and fit and will play well in a system but will inevitably like every other player on the pitch make individual errors.

I don’t think we should have a sponsor for our training ground either. It’s a bit trashy and I know we would get more than £150,000 over 3 years but I still think we should call it ‘ The Burns McGrain training ground.

Glad to get all that off ma chest.

I wouldn’t say he’s better than Pele. I wouldn’t even say he’s better than George Best!

    It’s all subjective,innit?

But,no lie,I turned to the company I was in tonight. What’s yer thoughts, lads. Is CR a ma baw hero, geez it and youse can be the support?

CR had nothing to prove, the career he has had. And tonight,he gave all his doubters a wee version of a Glasgow Kiss.

    Hat Trick. GIRUY

  16. I honestly can’t see Brendan playing with two strikers, he has resisted for as long as I have seen his teams, unless he is desperate, just not his style, so I can’t see him changing any time soon, what that tells us is I have no clue, thankfully he will have a clue.

    Definitely better than Pele.

My all time football hero when I was a boy.

Although he never scored as many game changing goals as Ronaldo.

Pele slips to third behind CR who now stands behind the greatest.

Because of the Stevie Gee express train (lets go,bring it on) blue revolution, Lawwell has panicked and spent all our transfer budget on a 3rd choice striker

He’s a genius footballer, one of the best we will ever see. I honestly don’t understand why anyone would say otherwise.

He’s a pleasure to watch, even on tv. As of course are many others.

Thing is,we can watch on tv,years ago we read about them in a paper or saw them in a one-off.

Now,I’ll leave our own heroes out of this, but…

How many great players were on view when Real won 7-3? Or even 1-0 nearly half a century later?

Betcha a fair number on here saw one or the other. Betcha a fair few saw both.

You and I have a half century and more of memories,of great players and great occasions.

Grand, innit? And we didnae Chet to get there either…

  20. I think big Eddie will play on the left with Moussa up top and on occasion up front himself if Moussa isn’t playing. His versatility is handy in that respect. Brendan played both against Hearts at home and away to combat their physicality. I was slightly puzzled why B didn’t play them together more often as they are excellent together.

Very difficult. To score that goal tonight, last minute, biggest rivals, and know he was gonna do it. That’s not just skill-you could do it and so could I when we were kids.

About once in ten,if we were lucky.

He knew how important it was,but he

    KNEW IT WAS GOING IN!!!

    We all did.

But I’ll tell you how good a free kick it was. We all knew he was going for it,that he’d score, best keeper in the world etc.

None of us knew where he was gonna put it.

You know fine well that Pedro will not open the biscuit tin, as for Brendan being a one hit wonder, I have to agree with you, he is coaching players who could win the league with their eyes shut and have their legs tied together, a wean could do that ffs, wasting money to beat the band, shocking stuff so it is.
