Successful teams get the dirty jobs done

131

We seldom remember games like yesterday, won with a porous midfield which was unable to push play into the Dundee half for much of the second period, but they regularly happen.

For me, the example that always springs to mind came three weeks after the 6-2 game, when a Larsson double helped us come from behind to seal a 1-2 win at Dunfermline with 5 minutes remaining.  The younger generation will not know, but the 6-2 was such a huge moment in our history.  It felt like the tide had turned, then just weeks later we sat through a tormenting game in Fife, worried we had fooled ourselves.

Title winning teams get the dirty jobs done, bank the points and move onto the truly memorable occasions.  6-2 was indeed the day the tide turned, our difficult time in Fife is scarcely remembered.

Brendan Rodgers has plenty to consider this week.  After the Scottish Cup semi-final win on penalties, he made a significant revision and gave James Forrest his first league start since 1 November.  That decision proved pivotal and may inspire him to mix things up again next time out.

Yesterday’s pivotal change came when Callum McGregor and Kyogo were replaced by Tomoki Iwata and Adam Idah.  Callum was shadowed out of the game by Dundee’s Luke McCowan.  The decision to return Callum and Reo Hatate to the starting line-up, when both are working on match fitness, looks worthy of revision.

Celtic’s strength in depth is bearing fruit.  With first choice players absent or below form, the manager has match winners he can call on.

Thank you for your message which I believe to be genuine.

I will not be giving up my ST, much to the annoyance of some. I do on occasion miss a game due to work or holiday and I will certainly let you know via these pages and if we can manage a swap I am happy to do so. My office is in city centre and you are High St I think so should not be beyond us to arrange. Seat is in MS with only two short stairs so hopefully that would work for you.

Sorry Jimmy but I never suggested I would not renew rather that others told me not to as I don’t share their views on how we are run. I am really wounded by that and those posters should be ashamed of themselves. Been ST holders since Hampden and pay at the gate at Celtic End for many years before. Watched a lot of poor teams and managers over the years but still never missed it.

As for those fellow supporters who basically suggested I give up and feck off – thanks for your solidarity. It is hard to believe to Celtic supporters would act in such a manner.

I and many other are frustrated that our football team appears to be a means to generate profit and dividend for those with a controlling interest. It appears less interested in being the best that we can be and more interested in just getting away with it. In recruitment terms we appear more interested in getting the profit modelling correct than getting the right player with the right experience for the right positions.

It’s not wrong to want us to be the best we can be and it’s not wrong to be frustrated that we are getting goalies booked for wasting time against Dundee when we have such a huge financial advantage.

“Performance is irrelevant, getting the job done and banking three points is all that matters at this stage of the season”

I cannot argue with the above well-worn sentiment, and if/when it comes to pass and the title is won, then all well and good, we move on to another campaign as champions.

Yesterday we met with the weakest of the top five opponents – we were fortunate to leave with the win.

    —————-

i watched the “highlighths” last night,

expecting a nervy, lucky to win, to survive, dundees best perormance this season with celtic hanging on for dear life.

however, i watched the whole game again, un-emotional, just the football aspects.

ce;tic were in control at most points.

a hatate goal instead of the post would have sealed the game.

    their goal was a deflection,

asfter that, this team chasing a place in europe went long thrown ins, shelled the box only a few times, a few coreners and ………..

    MADE ONE SINGLE CHANCE.

celtic had 3 after they scored, we were in control, i dont buy inot the hype that we are struggling or poorly coached or that the fabled game management is an unknown to the celts, when we do actually see a game out the response is hysterical.

er go, darwin you type nonsense.

I think they call them the Prawn Sandwich Brigade in Manchester, we have a fair few on here, educated beyond their intellect, and nasty to go with it.

  5. TOM MCLAUGHLIN on 29TH APRIL 2024 1:37 PM

“Joe Hart wasn’t simply booked for time-wasting. There was already a ball on the spot for a goal kick. He went behind the goals seeking out another ball. His yellow was justified because he was at it.”

He went looking to retrieve the ball that went behind as it did so and did not clock that ball at any point; perhaps deliberately ;)

Whilst his back was turned another ball was provided / placed onto the field. This rarely happened as I said because he and other Celtic players were doing this previously throughout the game in order to speed up the restart of play. So his actions were not entirely without cause and for Beaton to be so selective I think did just show his frustration. If only he was so interested in speeding up play consistently I think we’d all enjoy games more.

Thank you for your RESPONSE MOISY and your excellent Post above.

I really appreciate your ” Offer” of considering ME to perhaps use your Season Book IF you are on holiday etc etc, that is VERY KIND of you and its greatly appreciated.

I live just OFF The SALTMARKET, just down from Glasgow Cross obviously, so it would be no problem to meet up, and I would simply book a Taxi IF need be as I can’t walk more than 10 yards without being in some discomfort.

The fact that YOUR Seat in Celtic park is in the MAIN STAND is excellent news also.

Feel free to get my Email Address from PAUL67 if you wish, or you can contact me thru the CQN Blog.

It might also be worth contacting a few supporters clubs/buses as many often have spares for any given game and will be happy to see them used. My son now often gets to take his pal whenever I can get a spare ticket if there is also a spare seat on our bus and he uses the two seats we have tickets for together and I then use the spare which in my case can be for any area but if you were clear with what you needed they could contact you only as and when a suitable ticket is available.

“Not transferable” means it cannot be used by anyone other than the person whose name is on the card although lots of ST holders pass their card on to family/friends if they can’t make the game.

That would be fine with some of the clubs also. A lot have more tickets/members than they have seats on a bus (esp as some work on/offshore for weeks at a time and leave their tickets with the club/bus when away). They wont require you to use the bus, they can meet you at the ground and either see you in and retain the card OR meet before/after the game to give you the card / retrieve it. The later may require ID or similar to be exchanged for the duration of the game. Not 100% but this has been the way of it for 20+ years despite all of the “non transferrable” small print. The club I used to be back in t’day before I moved to the south coast had about a dozen season tickets in various names of people who NEVER went – bar the odd derby or Euro game – and they sold them on a per game basis to members of the club/association.

wrong day, wrong message, not supportive of the manager or the team.

i gave up my seat, i regret it now, but i was too unwell to keep attending, someone else got the chance of my seat (or they havnt because it is empty for every game)

i was hospitalized again last week. sure celtic performances affect my mood, but not enough that it occupies my every waking thought.

in my room was 2 rangers men, ans a salvationist saint mirren supporter, we talked a little about baxter, johnston, beating enegland, and the wonders of the nhs.

for all our collective woes, nobody seemed that bothered about the celtic plc.

but as the doctors are free to advice me, if something makes you sick, stop doing it.

Moisey 17…for what it’s worth, I found your original post totally understandable. Many of us get frustrated with performance levels, especially when we know what we are capable of and also added to that the belief that our administrators are not nearly as passionate as we, the average fans are. I’d let your detractor’s opinion float right over your head. I smile when I think of the number of times I have left the ground saying, ‘ That’s it, I’m finished, I’m not going back.’ , only to find myself queuing up at the turnstile for the next game. When it’s in your blood, it’s in your blood.

Callum will be 31 years old this summer.

I hope he rests up, recovers fully, and is raring to go for Celtic again in August.

After the injury disrupted season we’re currently going through (the worst for injuries I can remember) … having key, senior players regularly available next season is a must.
