Emerging talent, Slovenian reaction, footballs morals

1393

Delighted to hear Ronny Deila is planning to rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Cup Final.  There is plenty to be gained from playing the next wave of Callum McGregors at Inverness tomorrow, and little to be lost in the league race.

Our unique position in world football, a club who are so massively bigger than all others they are not involved in a proper competition to win the league, has more drawbacks than advantages, but we need to exploit this position by developing emerging talent when the stars align.

The morning after the day before the Slovakian media were very respectful of Celtic.  There was an acceptance that their assessment of Celtic was based on two unrepresentative performances against Legia.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Slovenian coverage was the appreciation of the “modern football” Celtic played.  Assessments of Maribor’s chances in the return leg were pragmatic.  Expectations are low, but with the tie level, they know they still have a chance.  Hopes are, that Maribor’s misplaced optimism is viral, and that Celtic will be infected by the same disease.

Celtic’s job on Tuesday is to make sure they treat Maribor as though they were Bayern Munich.

Oh Malky.  You and I both know that football is remarkably indifferent to moral uncertainty, the actions over the last 24 hours of the thoroughly reprehensible League Managers’ Assocation testify to that.  Practically anything is forgiven or overlooked, but only up to a point.  Malky MacKay has been implicated in attacks against Chinese, Koreans, black people, gays and Jews, quite a unique full house.

Cardiff City have already leveraged this to obtain a grovelling apology and have now cost him a seven figure contract, offered by his friend at Crystal Palace.  Question is, after the controversy dies down and the obligatory contrition is served, will another club offer him a contract?  I don’t think so.

As far as the football industry is concerned, Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.

That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.

So today, a 10 p ew lucky 15 costs £3 stake. Bookies of course luv these types of bet, but hey, as I say, low stakes to potentially nice returns for a bit of fun only and maybe a wee bit of money for charity.

Rubin: We had to let Wakaso go to Celtic

RUSSIAN club Rubin Kazan have defended their decision to loan winger Wakaso Mubarak to Celtic by insisting they had to let him go because he no longer wanted to play for them.

Wakaso Mubarak is waiting for a work permit to complete his loan move to Celtic

The 24-year-old Ghanaian midfielder is waiting for a work permit to be approved to let him complete his move and will arrive for a medical next week.

Rubin fans have criticised the decision to loan him to the Hoops but the club’s sporting director Ayrat Garayev said: “He wasn’t getting games and asked to be allowed to leave.

“We then received the offer from Celtic, who have the advantage of playing in the Champions League. We could have insisted he stay but if a player decides he wants to leave, he is not worth keeping. So we wish him all the best.”

Meanwhile, ex-Celtic starlet Islam Feruz has been shipped out on loan by Chelsea to the Russian second-division side Krylia Sovetov. The 18-year-old striker opted to sign a one-year deal with them rather than go to the English Championship.

In May, Feruz turned down the chance to play for Scotland Under-19s in their Euro Elite qualifiers. Instead he turned out for a Chelsea select in a sevens tournament in Hong Kong.

I’d keep the same back 5 as against Maribor, I think they need game time together. I too would play Kayal for the same reason.

  25. Louis van Gaal is said to be open to letting Anders Lindegaard leave.

    #453262744 / gettyimages.com

Danish media are reporting that Manchester United backup keeper Anders Lindergaard is set to move to Celtic on loan in the coming days.

The Dane has played second fiddle for most of his four seasons at the club, and wasn’t even on the bench as United kicked off this year’s Premier League campaign with a loss at home to Swansea. He was this week linked with a move to Portuguese giants Benfica.

It is rumoured that Van Gaal rates 24-year-old Ben Amos ahead of the former Aalesund man, and the Englishman has started the season as back up to undisputed first choice David de Gea.

    #452700898 / gettyimages.com

Lindegaard has made just 28 appearances for United since joining in 2010, and struggled for any game time at all last season as he played just 3 games under David Moyes and Ryan Giggs.

Celtic recently sold England international Fraser Forster to Southampton for £10 million, and though they have former Scotland international Craig Gordon at the club, there will certainly be doubts regarding the former Sunderland man’s fitness after he only recently came out of retirement.

SEE ALSO: How would Van Gaal fit Di Maria into his Manchester United midfield?

With fellow Scandinavian Ronny Deila in charge at Celtic Park, Lindegaard would have access to much more regular football in Glasgow while the Scottish champions monitor and improve Gordon’s fitness.

Whether Van Gaal dips into the transfer market to reinforce his goalkeepers should Lindegaard depart will depend on just how much confidence he has in Amos, after this summer criticising the player for failing to save Miralem Pjanic’s long range effort on United’s US tour.

  26. Heilan’ fling for Celtic fringe players

CELTIC boss Ronny Deila will shuffle his pack in Inverness today as he keeps one eye on Champions League qualification.

Ronny Deila is set to shuffle his pack

The Hoops play in the early kick-off in the Highlands in a fixture sandwiched between their Euro play-off legs against NK Maribor.

Celtic will take a 1-1 draw into the game at Celtic Park on Tuesday night, when any win for the Slovenians would be enough to send the SPFL Premiership champions spinning out of the Champions League and into the Europa League.

And Deila is ready to explore all options against John Hughes’ side this afternoon to give his team the best chance of success on the European stage.

When asked if he will give some of his fringe players a chance to shine, the Norwegian said: “We’ll see what we do, but that’s one of the opportunities you have at Celtic.

“The advantage we have is a very big squad of 25 players who can all play at the top level in Scotland.”

The Parkhead gaffer added: “I’m into using my squad and I believe in my squad. That’s why I have it.

“So I think there will be some changes against Inverness. If you are with Celtic, you are a good player.

“It’s very important that the system that is going to carry the team through is not about just one or two players. We will see how far we have come in that way.

“We need some experience, of course, but also it’s important to have fresh legs.”

  27. That’s us off to Inverness.

    C’mon the Hoops.
