Fan pressure gets through to SPL chairmen

714

My initial reaction, that the outcome from today’s SPL meeting and votes on Financial Fair Play, was on the upside of expectations, appears to be well founded.  All matters not relating to a Newco football team were passed.  Clubs had the opportunity to vote through a process to allow a Newco access the league but it was apparent that there was clearly insufficient support for this proposal, making subsequent proposals to apply sanctions to a Newco moot.

I understand sentiment towards Rangers reflected the comments from St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, who said, “What’s a court getting involved in football for? The decision had been made.”

There is no question that fan pressure has been brought to bear on club chairmen.

This interpretation compares starkly with BBC Reporting Scotland tonight who, if I paraphrase, said, ‘If Rangers don’t get a CVA, depending on your point of view, they will either get “back” into the SPL with light or with punitive punishment’.  The broadcaster also threw in the suggestion that ‘Rangers’ might get ‘back’ in without punishment.

I’m a huge admirer of Reporting Scotland but this was perhaps the worst 60 seconds in 85 years of BBC reporting.  There was a decision made to ignore the real story, that no facility to get a Newco (not Rangers) into the SPL was approved, to ignore the outcome of several months of fan pressure, and to tailor a story that suits a controversial narrative.

Fortunately, it looks like the BBC will be back on form soon, but they really need to look at what happened today.

As for the CVA, it becomes less and less likely by the hour.

UPDATE

Having spoken to BBC Reporting Scotland’s Alastair Lamont it’s clear he has been briefed differently from me, which explains the contrast between our interpretations. This story is becoming a nightmare to report, and probably to read. Fair play to Alastair for being up for the debate. I feel much better about my favourite news programme.

I hear we’re playing Ajax in the Amsterdam Arena on the 21st July, definitely a cheaper option!!

I agree, problem is, where do you start ?

Most of the proven managers have had serious money to spend, guys like BR have taken a team of no hopers into the epl and kept them there with no money, he has done it with flair and playing the game like it should be played.

I think he will do good with better players, and no doubt a few bob to spend, but he may well be under so much pressure he might do a Kenny and buy crap.

    Aye, time will tell.

Aye the press wanted Harry, but the powers know that Harry might yet be back in court.

They are playing the %, he will fail, that is a certainty, the players are crap, they are going through a serious bad patch is english football, the money has rendered english international football meaningless.

They have no chance of having a decent team for years, just like the huns.

A blast from the past, I grew up with Rab as we called him, a character and a half.

He was a star in our Street Team (Earl st Scotstoun) but unbelieveably not THE star such was the quality circa 1969!!

He would play for St Johnstone, I think,on the Saturday then play 30 a side on a Sunday with us up in Victoria park Whiteinch.

He played for St Lukes BG in the Gorbals and was scouted from there along with big John McCord. He also was responsible for getting me the tin pail for the first time!!!

I,m sure Kitalba wuold know him also.

I actually don’t have a real opinion on Rodgers, just that young ambitious managers, with new ideas, or at least old ideas recycled do better.

BTW, I told this wee story earlier, but I’m telling it again.

I went to Celtic Park today to buy a season ticket for myself and my daughter. I was taken through the stadium, to view the couple of seats I couldn’t decide on, settled on section209, great place to watch football, not too far from the angle I watched from the Jungle, dates me I know.

Anyway, thanks to the ladies in the office who helped, and Eammon, he took me to the seats, let me have a look around, took my photo in Neil alennons seat, in the tunnel as well, cheers for taking the time to do that, I enjoyed it.

    Roll on next season.

  10. Goodnight all.

BBC Radio Ulster calling to the house tomorrow to do interview about Oscar & his journey including the use of social media (twitter) to put his story out there, and how the messages of support have helped us bla bla bla.

Opportunity to get his story out & raise profile of Neuroblastoma locally.

Should be broadcast tomorrow on the evening extra prog after 4 or 5pm for anyone able to tune in.

  13. TET, twenty years ago money came into Scottish football, in came players from everywhere chasing the cash, ragers had money to burn(not their own).

Scotland internationally suffered. Maybe that is what is happening in England now, a top flight full of players chasing cash, rather than home grown players.

Germany has a system worth having a look at.

Souness has a lot to answer for the destruction of scottish football, and hopefully soon for dodgy payments, karma catches up now and again.

Aye, the Germans know what it’s all about, they manufacture what the world wants, they have their football sorted, they are a shrewd nation, and they will probably win the euros this year.

glad you got some good seats – mind you anything facing the pitch @ CP and anything facing AWAY from the pitch @ Ibrokes has to count as a good seat. Eamon is a good chap -always willing to help us out and has helped sort out an INCREASE in the Kano Foundation allocation for next season – yes , after 2 seasons of consolidation , we’ve expanded to 62 seats (52+10) – still in the same section (115) and still there for all to see and support .

As i’m currently experiencing a ‘loan’ from Glasgow to London ,i’m floating the suggestion of a Euro 2012 CQN/Kano Foundation London HQ for the duration of the games . I’m looking for volunteers to come along and cheer whatever team we fancy , talk about Celtic and generally get to know a few of the names on the blog . If your’e interested , drop me a note on sannabhoy@thekanofoudation.com

Gordon, I just done a quick Expedia (Flights and hotel) search, flying from Glasgow first with KLM then another flight(s) with a company I cannot make out. Can only Guess at the route, Glasgow-Amsterdam-NewYork-Philly? Had a quick look at the distance between NYC and Philly, I can see how easy it is for a direct flight to NYC.
