Fantastic Juninho sensationalism

859

Celtic have been dragged into a former club’s scandal today by Scotland’s former best-selling daily newspaper, who have completely misrepresented issues surrounding the registration of Juninho.

The newspaper makes the astonishing and completely inaccurate claim that the “SPL have revealed they decided not to investigate Celtic’s EBT payment to Juninho”.

The SPL have investigated Celtic’s EBT payment to Juninho.  They found Celtic acted absolutely in line with the rules and this week issued a statement confirming this.  To tell people otherwise is recklessly inaccurate.

A front page statement proclaims:

“Hoops in clear because Juninho only received cash AFTER he left the club”

Utter nonsense.  It’s a bit like saying:

“Hoops in clear because Juninho’s name begins with the letter J”

A true reflection would read:

“Hoops in clear because they discharged the registration and entire employment process of Juninho in a correct manner and no differently than the way every other SPL club has registered players”

When Juninho “received the cash” has nothing whatsoever to do with Celtic being “in the clear”.  It is, frankly, an embarrassing attempt to pander to the paranoia of others and betrays a fundamental lack of knowledge.

The newspaper also dedicated all-but-one column of their back page, and part of an inside page, to the ‘story’ of how Celtic “didn’t end up in the dock”.  Compare this to the coverage the same newspaper gave to the actual SPL statement on Juninho, released in an earlier attempt to dampen-down ill-informed paranoia, which received a tiny, 35-word, 1-inch back page note and a single column inside the paper.

Throughout recent weeks a basic misunderstanding of the legality of EBTs appears to have taken root in some minds.  It is as though some mass psychological phenomenon is at play.  Or maybe it’s just a deliberate attempt to confuse the easily confused?

EBTs are not against football, or specifically, player registration, rules.  This is accepted as fact by anyone even vaguely familiar with the rules, yet we have some, who should know better, tell us that Rangers’ EBTs were recorded in their annual accounts, as though this is some defence against player registration charges, or that others should join them ‘in the dock’, because they used an EBT.

The matter in hand is not the use of EBTs, it’s about player registrations.  You can pay players in EBTs, folding notes or Dutch tulip bulbs, as long as you register him correctly.  And pay your tax.

Player registration rules are categorically clear, clubs must register all contracts with the SFA and SPL.  All monies due in relation to football must appear on those contracts.  Juninho’s contract was registered correctly.

On this issue, Celtic are exposed to the joint analysis of other 11 SPL clubs and the other 93 SFA clubs (counting both Ibrox based clubs), who control the rules and their scrutiny.

There are limits to what an employer can publicly reveal about a former employee’s personal financial details, but Celtic have revealed all facts concerning Juninho’s employment to the SFA and SPL.

Their conduct was investigated, was found to be absolutely and completely impeccable AND in line with SFA advice on player registration.

All I am wondering about is, should we be happy that those who should be planning for some serious headwinds are instead following a ridiculous wild goose chase?

I think so.  That being the case, what are people trying to divert attention from?  Hmmm.

Last week I met John Maguire, managing director of Celtic Development Pools. John’s been there for 30 years, the enthusiasm for youth player development is tangible when you listen to him talk. He’s at the coal face, raising money for the enormous youth development project which brings players like James Forrest into the club, and also polished Tony Watt into the exciting talent he is.

The ‘Pools predate my time but today’s fabulous harvest of young talent was made more possible by the Paradise Windfall, which now pays £15,000 each home game and has been the largest lottery in world football for years. Income from the Pools and Paradise Windfall generates around £1.5m each season.

The coaches at Lennoxtown (and most fans) know how important it is for Celtic’s youth scouting and development to be the very best it can be. It has to be world class. For the guys at the Pools office, the challenge is clear, fund this ambition.

To this end, this weekend the Development Pools launch TikPick. For £1 you can win a cash prize for predicting 10 results. It’s not a lot of money and none of it will go towards putting fuel in a £100k motor car. This is a grass-roots level investment in our future.  Go take a look here.

You have articulated much better than me much of my own experiences at Celtic Park. 8. Re: the post above by Saltires and his unhappiness with the CTC and basically poor customer support. Not the same but I have sworn not to buy from the Celtic Store ever again (on-line) late arrivals, poor communications etc. I understand your frustrations.

Poor frontline customer focused service Celtic shold get it sorted, perhaps a complete overhaul. Never mind with the new Celtic development and larger store perhaps these will be sorted.

    Mon the Hoops!

  9. That appeared before I had finiahed. Don’t know why.

As I was saying, when I was interrupted, I know personally 2 people who have worked in the Ticket Office. They have both told me that it is who you know that counts for most things there, e.g. some people have no difficulty getting Cup Final Tickets. I have had one in about 10 years.

  10. Good to see that managerial dud MCCoist is hurting. He sure has found level in div 3 althoough I have a feeling his tactical prowess is more suitable to the juniors.

The only baffling thing for me is why the press don’t ask him about his EBT with his side letter that helped destroyed his former club. I suppose with the ostrich like behaviour of the press during the whole saga from Murray to Whyte to Green kinda shows why they ignore the questions about MCCoist and tax evasion.

I hope he is manager of zombie FC for many years to come. There will be no need for him to get a gig in the pantomime season , we can enjoy his tactical repertoire in tier 4 of Scottish football.

We enjoy your pain and long may it continue

  11. Morning all,

Re the ticket office. I have found the staff on the whole to be friendly and trying to be helpful if they can. Perhaps it’s more to do with what they have at their disposal. Correct tools for work, IT, good/poor communications with other departments that have an impact on ticket distribution, correct training courses on customer facing etc.

My impression is of staff who mostly try to give a good service, but have deal with things out with their control. (That’s where customer facing training might be helpful in defusing a heated situation).

I have been in the ticket office when I have heard and seen staff taking some awful abuse. But having experienced frustrating situations myself, sometimes folk can lose the rag.

I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes re training and the equipment the staff have, so can only comment from observations.

  13. I’d imagine that working in the ticket office leaves people, who like most of the back office staff at CP are not particularly well paid, open to allegations of favouritism and corruption, and that the one way to avoid any such suspicion is to do everything by the book.

I don’t think they are deliberately obstructive or unhelpful.

  14. We are ALL Celtic supporters, and will be until we go to that big ‘Paradise in the sky’!

Over the last few weeks/months several posters have complained – quite rightly- about shortcomings especially in the Ticket Office and the online store.

There is clearly something that is not working – and it needs to be addressed by the club NOW.

A couple of days ago I decided that I would buy an Overseas Season Ticket and gave all my details to the club online! Waiting to hear from them – fingers crossed!

  16. Also re the general service customers receive from Celtic. I posted on here a few months back. As a season ticket holder I had never once been approached directly by the club to ask for my opinions on any of the services provided to me.

Anyone who runs a successful business will tell you that customer feedback is paramount to improve the service. Don’t know if any of you guys have been contacted directly by the club for feedback.

It’s also an opportunity to engage with your customer directly and could perhaps open up other streams of revenue.

Examples of customer experiences being posted today. Please Celtic think about engaging directly-individually with your customers before you lose some of them.

Okay so I am saying customers’, but of course we are more than that, and there is no doubt about it we are taken for granted because of our emotional ties to the club.

  19. So Sally McMoist cannot understand the difference between how Celtic reacted to EBT’s and the way his cheating lot did.

Well to help out here is an analogy based on Paul Baxendale PornStars explanation

Celtic were left with a bus, they did not want it they in herited it. Celtic got advice on this bus and how it worked and decided it was a risky vehicle and it’s road worthines was in question . The decision was made to drive it back to the depot and park it up, they did so obeying the rules of the road and following the highway code at all times and in the process paid the fare required for the journey, not only that after they parked it up they filled it up with deisel and paid for it to be serviced just in case the journey came back to haunt them.

Cheats FC however dodged their fare jumped red light ran the vehicle into the ground and set fire to the depot while flicking the vicky at the mechanics .

    Thats the difference

I would like to think they got a receipt for this, you know for TAX purposes.

  20. Some how that last sentence is out of place it should come after “paid for it to be serviced” I should proof read before posting

For a guy who is “absolutely loving life in the Third Division” and doesn’t know if he even wants to return to the SPL, he spends a hell of a lot of time talking about the SPL and our club. Celtic should and will continue to ignore these lower league rabble rousers.

The press however, should, like you say, be asking McCoist about his and Walter’s EBT and also about his 4% stake in the New Club.

Did he invest £450k of his own money or was he gifted a stake by Green? I’d be willing to be bet he was gifted it, shortly after the period where he wouldn’t publicly back Green and shortly before he was telling the world Green was a great guy. We’ll let the bears try to work that one out for themselves.

If McCoist is truly “puzzled” by the Juninho EBT situation then it is little wonder he is a rank rotten football manager.
