FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

Noooo but if you think very hard I’m sure you can guess. Go on. ;-)

  2. I’m hoping for an early Barca goal in the Liga decider, as it would open the game right up. I have also decided to adopt the Basil Fawlty position on Atletico’s past sins:

” Bunch of Krauts, Fawlty, all of ’em. Bad eggs!”

“Yes, well, forgive and forget, eh, Major. God knows how, the bastards!”

Wouldn’t sign May for us, would rather stick with our Hairy Strikers!

Arsenal don’t stand a chance – I put money on them.

Can anybody see a pattern here? Late piece of advice – get your money on Bayern now!

  6. Great final today. Best team won. Stand-out players were Robertson and Dow and Wotherspoon and O’Halloran. Could do worse than bring Robertson back. United wonder kids Gauld, Mackay Stevens and Armstrong all anonymous.

  7. West Wales Celt on

Fabianski no chance with either goal but positioning awful at the last corner.

    Commiserations to Jackie btw…

    Kojo,

We have a manager and I don’t see the point of looking ahead for future ones.

    A time and place….etc.

However, I don’t understand the love affair that some have with Jackie Mac.

An average utility player, who spent ten years with us, two of them reasonably consistant and hasn’t set the heather alight so far in his managerial career.

2-1. What a goal Cazorla. Was thinking even before that that Arsenal will still win this.
