FFP hits the mark, Atletico-Hearts of 86

2160

It remains a possibility that Atletico Madrid will lose today’s league decider against Barcelona and next week’s Champions League final against Real Madrid (vernacular: ‘do a Hearts), but I hope not.  The fact that they have pushed the two most celebrated football clubs on the planet to the limit, across two tournaments, is already remarkable.  Should they deliver on two fronts, it will be the most stunning achievement in European football in 47 years.

There was a healthy amount of bloodlust for the Uefa Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules to fine the life out of the likes of Manchester City and Paris St Germain, before banning them from Uefa competition.  This was never the point.

What Uefa have done is bring Europe’s two most freely spending clubs into line.  FFP will restrict City and PSG’s expenditure, transfer market activity and squad selection.  This is a result.

It’s a pity we’re not at Celtic Park to lift the Scottish Cup today.  *!*!

Enormous thanks to Tommy Gemmell and everyone who participated in the entertainment here yesterday.  Tommy thoroughly enjoyed the banter and will be back on the blog below this article early this afternoon to catch up with the questions he didn’t have time for yesterday.

  4. Well Done St Johnstone on a brilliant achievement.

    Unlucky Dundee United.

Celtic Park is a superb venue for finals compared to the pathetic National Stadium, where people are miles away from the action if they are unfortunate enough to be at either end.

Please Celtic, make the Final next season.

  5. I would like to thank the pitch at Paradise for facilitating a good game of fitbaw..

    Congrats St.J.

    Worthy winners.

I was impressed with them in the recent game against us.

They are a hard working team and incredibly fit.

Even though United didn’t get a break, they looked Disunited as a team and played most of the game with one man up front.

That should stop any talk of Mc.Namara being a future Celtic manager.

  9. Congratulations to St Johnston.

Does stick in the throat a wee bit saying that especially given that as we know a good few of them are hurting Huns.

Particularly Disapointed to see that Hun Wright lifting silverware.

Like their manager however, seems a decent guy

  14. Well done St.Johnstone.

Dundee United’s reputation went bfore them (£5million for young Gauld? Whit?).

On the other hand, Stevie May convincing me every time I see him that dangling £1.5 mill in front of St.J might be a gamble worth taking – I like his energy and appetite for competition all across the front line. And he’s a goal-sniffer by nature. We could (and have done recently!) shop worse.

  15. Congratulations St.Johnstone.a well run wee club who are making their own history.
