Forged on the road

1529

Many of our early season concerns manifest themselves in the performances against Dundee.  A 1-1 draw at Dens on the last day of the summer transfer window, followed by a 2-1 win at Celtic Park in November, told the story of a club just about getting by on the domestic front.

The Celtic Park win saw us go seven points ahead of Aberdeen on the same games played, but defeat to a Stuart Armstrong goal for Dundee United, and a home draw against bottom of the table Ross County, briefly gave us what looked like a genuine championship challenge.

Something happened at Rugby Park in the first week of the year.  Kris Commons was sublime but the improvement in Celtic’s performance was due to more than just him.  We’ve won six games on the bounce, without losing a goal, with convincing performances, in all but away to Ross County, who belie their lowly position to squeeze every ounce of effort out of Celtic.

Before last week’s game at Hampden it was possible to find plenty of “Celtic are rubbish as well” comments.  We were rubbish, earlier in the season, but you’ve watched the team grow in recent months.  So much so that it’s becoming difficult to give an honest opinion on the goalkeeper, he is so rarely troubled.

Forged on the road

On Wednesday we have the Glasgow derby against Partick Thistle, before a trip to Perth next weekend, often a difficult venue for Celtic.  That will bring to end a nine game run since New Year, with only one game at Celtic Park.  The growth in the team has been forged on the road, often on smaller grounds with variable surfaces.

The return to Celtic Park, on Thursday 19, against the Italians with their famous blue and black stripes, will present Ronny Deila and his players with a bigger challenge.  It’s not a must-win game, but it’s an absolutely necessary test to a team who are looking more and more imperious in Scotland with each passing week.

Not the point, mate. The point is that the poor and the not so poor amongst us pay our share according to the law.

The uber-rich don’t,won’t,and spend more than most of us earn to ensure that.

Until people like your good self accept that the benefits of operating in the UK come with a cost,i.e pay your way,and continue to make excuses for opting out,we will always have this argument.

    If you work here,cough up.

Btw,how many days has Dave King spent in the UK this year? He shoooorly wouldn’t want to fall out with another revenue service, would he?

  5. Philvis @ 11:33 said: ‘I’m not happy paying tax at all. But I’m not naive enough to think my taxes would come down if the British State got its greedy hands on all the wealth in Switzerland. They’d just waste that money, while screaming for more.’

Philvis: yes, but – you’ll still want those nice fire and rescue chaps to attend (in a timely and efficient manner) to the odd car crash or burning building; have the plod control the traffic and onlookers, then have ambulances and hospitals cope with the fall-out and the social services deal with the aftermath.

And so on and so on.

And we all reserve the right to bemoan ‘falling standards’ in education, overspends on grandiose ‘defence’ programmes, the state of out roads and the spiralling cost of the welfare state.

One of the things that bursts me about well off folk, is how they assume that they not only feel that they’re somehow worth more than their poorer paid (or welfare dependent) fellow citizens, but they should pay lower rates of tax than their fellow citizens.

For that’s one of the issues here: greedy barstewards being caught dodging tax.

You can dress this up in a number of ways, or come at this from any number of different angles, but that’s what sticks in the craws of most ordinary folk.

What’s your take on folk who were paid (or should that be ‘compensated’) through EBTs when they were legal … ?

It is interesting the mindset that compares Benefit cheat with tax cheating.

    They are not comparable.

One has a whole section of the accounting industry based on it, where acceptance into it is based on how much tax you wish to evade pending forecast of monies made.

The other is for the poor and needy where little advice is offered and you are treated like shyt and portrayed as scum sucking all monies out of the economy (in contrast to those nice tax dodging skanks with offshore accounts all over the place.)

    Indeed.

I have no objection to helping pay for essential services. I do feel ripped off at paying hundreds of pounds a month in council tax for a local authority that won’t collect the bins every week and expects me to sort through my own garbage like some sort of tramp.

For that reason I dump everything at the tip. It’ll be a cold day in Hades before I recycle.

  15. Winning captains I did ask the question how many Celtic supporters backed the ad financially. This was twisted into an allegation that I was trying to name people and that used as justification for naming me.

Naming a person is not something I would ever stoop to.

The fear and alarm that might result from such action is what some CQN’ers are now experiencing.

Eddieincarmichael’s situation is dreadful. Most people would agree. That’s why I suggested telling his neighbours. It’s surprising how people will rally round. Often those you least expect.

  16. My friends in Celtic,

I do not condone ANY such schemes whenever they were set up.

Back in the day Gordon Brown wanted to regulate more in the Financial Markets but was accused of Nanny stateism and advised by all and sundry that “light touch regulation” was what was necessary, the city would and could regulate itself, Pah.

However, it’s by sheer good fortune that he and Darling were the incumbents at the Treasury when it went breests up. Imagine Scotland had been following the Salmond line in a seperate state?

Thanks everyone for the messages of support, just read back and a bit overwhelmed tbh.

Just to say things have calmed down, so much so that I will probably be back at work this week.

Winning Captains is right about how I enraged them by engaging with them. That was a big mistake, I thought I was being smart by taunting them. A lesson learned for me.

  21. I went to the movies one night and bumped into a Sevco couple (just my luck).

The conversation, bearly tolerable as he ranted on the usual myths etc… about them being victims, demoted etc…., reached an end when she said, “Oh I do love Ally McCoist. He is such a lovely man.”

This is the man who encourages the exact kind of behaviour as experienced by Eddie Carmichael.

He (Sally) presents an image of a fun-loving, jovial guy, everyones friend.

About all that can be said for you, Philvis, is at least you’re honest!

I know you’ve been over this a hundred times before with plenty of us on here and you’re probably beyond redemption ;-)

But just for the heck of it:

You’re still defending the indefensible: accidents of birth, leading to trails of advantage and privilege, leading to better paid jobs and better quality of life, life expectancy, etc., while reserving the right to dodge out of paying for the services which are often essential to many of our less well-off fellow citizens.

Nothing wrong with some of that, but to compound this unfairness, ‘better off’ types often want to pay less towards the provision of what many of us consider to be essential services; including waste collection!

All the while reserving the right, on their death, to leave all their ‘hard earned’ wealth to their ill-deserving off-spring (who will themselves usually in their late forties/early fifties and already comfortably off by any meaningful measure).

(As an aside, I work for a voluntary organisation that supports people with disabilities, with local authorities buying the services we provide. From most of our ‘buyers’ we haven’t received an increase in our hourly rate since 2008. How have your finances faired over that time?)

The top 10% of UK earners pay 50% of all income tax.

    ——

They don’t pay tax on all their earnings especially the wad squirreled away in tax havens and that is the issue here.

The rest of us ie the majority of UK citizens pay tax at source on everything that is due

Maybe to even the field of play up we should let the majority keep their earnings untaxed and pay what they think is fair (or when HMRC knocks) like the rich tax dodgers.

Of course ending PAYE would be something the rich would strongly object to. Stuff the proletariat having the same tax opportunities as the rich which of course would put pressure on Governments to get more from them.

Bottom line is old chap a lot of rich people are not paying their share on all of their taxable income

For all of us to be truly in this together that must change…..thumbsup
