Forster, Samaras and Perth

1353

When I researched yesterday’s article (yes, research does happen sometimes) I was far from encouraged.  Udinese had an impeccable home record and Snr Di Natale is one of Europe’s irresistible strikers at the moment.

We didn’t manage to resist Di Natale but he will remember Fraser Forster for a few years.  We have been fortunate to see a few great goalkeeping performances in Europe in the last decade but last night Fraser was second perhaps only to David Marshall that night in Barcelona.  That last minute penalty save against Hearts on Saturday has moved the player onto a new platform.

Udinese had a good 20 minute spell when they looked every inch the team joint top of the Italian league but they were on the rack in the closing stages of the game.  Cha DuRi has had an eventful Europa League on the road this season.  He was a bit unfortunate at the Udinese goal but completely out of luck when he twisted his body mid-air to volley off the post.

Watching Georgios Samaras last night was a lesson in how complex a game football can be.  This is a player who could not hold down a place in the SPL last season, yet playing in a different position he had top-flight defenders throwing themselves at him in order to inhibit progress.

There is still work to be done, but the return of three first choice defenders will enhance the team considerably.  The most pleasing thing about last night came after the game; Fraser Forster’s focus was immediately on St Johnstone.  It’s all about Perth now.

Issue 5 of CQN Magazine will be out soon.  Hard copies will be available direct, at a considerably reduced cost from our current Magcloud arrangement and with a fast delivery turnaround.  Details soon.

  1. Can’t wait for the 28th but have trepidation about how the plods and fans will get on.

Football wise, I see a 3-0 but possibly liftings for minor singing offences.

    Not happy with this

I have stated my opposition to the IRA in many posts and that I expect support of such orgs to be outside of Celtic but harmless songs at the footie are and never will be criminal.

    Same at the huns

Sad times for free speech and daft boyishness

All I ever wanted is here in my arms

I said I’d always love you always did I always will

We’ll break ghe chains of poverty, and we’ll dance…..

  2. Coneybhoy

The vermin refuse to sit on Celtic seats, breaking the stadia laws apparently.

The 28th can not come quick enough.

Young James will be kicked out of the game but it is up to the rest to work Rangers like Maritimo/Malmo players done with Consummate ease. I posted both of their Europa League results earlier.

There is a whiff of smelly stuff going on in the ol Ecosse Nation.

Eagle Eyes on the ICT game today, Sir Alistair has asked for a fast start. First half penalty?

  3. Good morning to all from a frosty MK.

Rangers have a history of looking the other way when their supporters misbehaved and in some instances they’ve even mounted a defence which is why their supporters are the ill-disciplined rabble that are Ranger supporters.

I applaud Celtic for handing a life ban to the idiot with the banner, by acting so quickly and decisively they have demonstrated to the world the values of Celtic football club and their determination to protect both the reputation of the club and the supporters.

I’ve also got to admit to some sympathy for the idiot as his banner highlighted his lack of imagination and guile and I suspect his lack of thought in producing it, but the club’s reaction sends a clear signal to everyone.

  4. Silver City Neil Lennon on

For those who are depressed check out Night of the Living Redneck’s latest gif on KDS’ Generic Huns thread. It fair cheered me up.

  5. Som mes que un club on

    Good morning all.

Does anyone know of any City Centre/Gallowgate bars that are likely to show the match tomorrow?

    Cheers in advance.

  6. Last night my Australian wife and I and another couple celebrated my 50th year to the day as a Celtic Supporter. My wife fully understood what the day meant to me, having spent a few years in Scotland with me and my Celtic-mad family.

I woke on Saturday morning, went online and read the comments of Peter Lawwell with complete and utter disgust. Not at Peter Lawwell. I agree with every word he said and I share his obvious outrage. I am disgusted with the so-called Celtic supporters who decided to take flares into a game on foreign soil, and who unfurled an immature and Hunnish banner, shaming the name of Celtic and the entire world-wide support.

I haven’t read back, but am sure that the usual “sack the board” morons will be slaughtering PL for daring to speak out against the “holiest of the holy” who can do no wrong.

When I think back to Hampden 1965 and my father and his brother crying their eyes out because Jock Stein’s Celtic had won their first trophy after a number of years in the doldrums, I feel nothing but anger that the good name of Celtic and the love for the club that my father passed down to my own sons has been besmirched by ignorant, mindless and contemptible people who call themselves Celtic supporters.

I tell you right now . . . anyone who now insists on singing pro-IRA songs at Celtic games are gutless cowards, as are those on here who defend their right to do so. As I have said before – show any of these idiots a gun and they would piss their pants and run to their mammies.

It is easy to sing about the IRA in the middle of a crowd. It is nothing but macho-pruning by people who have empty lives and need to feel good about themselves. Not one of them faced a bullet or a bomb or even the threat of either, because if they did, they wouldn’t be glibly singing about it in a Football stadium.

Cowards and loud-mouths. Every last one of them.

  7. merseycelt loves Neil Lennon and the Green Brigade but despises the anti irish/catholic bigotry inherent within the organisations who constitute the scottish establishment on

    Morning good folk

    Refocus on the real enemies:

Namely, Rankers, most other scottish football clubs, The SFA, scottish meeja, the scottish establishment and Rankers.

Lawwell and Desmond’s first priority is their bank balance. When did successful capitalists ever stand up for points of principle? Stop being naive! People like them are happy to take the positives from what the GB have brought and it is essentially this: they have improved the deadly atmosphere within the stadium. No small thing but some of these lhads are obviously getting carried away with all the encouragement they’ve been getting. The mindlessly moronic banner may assist in reining in the more ‘rogue’ element. The club’s reaction to ban the ‘offender’ for life is a typical over-reaction of nasty capitalists. It was ever thus (see the imprisonment of the water bottle stealer during the summer riots).

It’s a crazy ole world here at CQN. Still waiting for the mea culpas from those who wanted rid of:

Lenny, Sammi, Big Dan and Bigger Fraser. At this rate, many on here will be praising Broony for his football, turning on Kayal for his inconsistency and revising their revised view of Charlie as a defender.

Perspective bhoys. Outside your bigoted, wee country, there are no targeted attacks on Celtic whose reputation as an inclusive, friendly club will outlive the recent hoopla around an up the ra chant, a sweary word being written on a banner and a firework being thrown in the direction of the pitch.

Hail Hail and Keep the Faith!

    Eyes on the prize, bhoys!

Going back to my hole, now!

See you in a week or so!

  8. In my night out at an Italian retaurant on the Gold Coast, all 4 of us were wearing Celtic shirts, all differing versions, in honour of my half-a-century Bhoy celebrations. The other couple were an Australian man and his Lebanese wife and they both listened to my stories of life as a Celtic supporter.

Most of the restaurant staff were Aussies or Aussie-Italian, until the chef came out and shook my hand and talked about the “Glasgow Celtic”. He is a Fiorentina fan and knew all about the club and a fair bit of its recent history. He is too young but actually remembers his father telling him about how Celtic “destroyed” Inter in Lisbon. His father was a Juventus man. Apparently they hated Inter more than AC Milan fans did.

I had a great night, and shed a few tears as the evening unfolded.

    Hail Hail.

  9. merseycelt loves Neil Lennon and the Green Brigade but despises the anti irish/catholic bigotry inherent within the organisations who constitute the scottish establishment on

Congratulation Tom McLaughlin. It is a noble cause that you follow.

I’m not so far away as you but far enough. I still play 5-a-side twice a week in Liverpool (despite my advancing years) and always wear my hoops. I occasionally wear the famous hoops at other times but, unfortunately, hoops and expanding guts is a bad combination.

Anyway, I have never been vilified and have often received praise/encouragement simply for adorning the strip of one of the world’s most well-liked clubs!

    Proud to be a celt!

  10. merseycelt loves Neil Lennon and the Green Brigade but despises the anti irish/catholic bigotry inherent within the organisations who constitute the scottish establishment –

It is a fact that you can wear the hoops in everyday life almost anywhere in the world, apart from Scotland, and I’d imagine certain parts of Northern Ireland.

One of my fondest memories was approaching a bar in Darwin wearing my hoops, and the barmaid saying, “Oh I love the shirts you Irish people wear. They are so colourful and just awesome.” She knew nothing about football. She just adored the shirt.

As it happens, my wife, stepdaughter and I were at the markets this afternoon and I came across a stall with hundreds of football shirts from all over the world. they were all fake of course. I even found a Celtic hoops shirt with a plain white back. As I say, there were shirts from possibly 100 clubs world-wide, but not one Rangers shirt. Maybe they were just sold out, but I doubt it.

I have a lot of connections in Liverpool and spent a lot of time there visiting relatives. It is a great city and, as you say, you can wear the hoops with pride and in safety.

  11. Who the hell knows what type of football madness today will bring.

These are testing times. Unfortunately, we are testing ourselves.

Wonder if the Hun sites are leading with “never interrupt your enemy………”

Anyway, Everton v Norwich. Over 2.5 goals is 3/4. A nice saver when the normal coupon goes bust.

  12. Apart from the obvious bannergate i`ve been giving some thought to some other fitba matters cover in the press yesterday

once again McCoist considers it appropriate to tap up other SPL players via his brothers in the press…this is a shameless practice designed to influence both the selling club and player ……there must be some rule against this behaviour

    and

our game is not on the tv on Sunday …………cannae imagine the tv not televising a hun game ..

  13. Tom McLaughlin,

Happy birthday from a frosty Hertfordshire. Agree with your comments. Celtic is about more than football but it is not be about the IRA. It is a shame how some naive young supporters have brought this nonsense to our club when we had such a good reputation.

This whole business has been completely blown out of all proportion by a rangers loving press desperate to even the score with the bigoted rioters over in Govan.

We need to get back to the football, we are on form an breathing down their neck and they do not like it. They are in dire financial trouble and may have to sell their best players but what issue dominates the headlines…?

The title is in our hands. We can win this league if we stick together. Get football back to the top of the agenda.

    Lubo.

I was visiting one of my brothers in Rome, in 1995 (I think). Pretty sure it was pre-di canio!

I happened to pass a little sports shop in a nondescript area and, to my surprised delight, observed a prominently displayed bumble bee celtic top in the front window.

Never found out if the shopkeeper was a fan; or if the mighty hoops team were massively popular in Rome at the time; or (as my cynical brother believed) that the strip was simply well liked by Italian football fans.

NB My brother is currently working in the NW Territories of your massive country.

    Morning,all.

Just back from a work-related trip which should have taken 90 mins. It took four and a half hours, due to ice followed by freezing rain. No sign of a gritter, then or earlier.

On the return part of the journey I saw FIVE cars off the road, and a three car smash. No sign of a gritter.

All told,I drove about 200 miles last night, treacherous conditions. Too faffin’ dangerous for a gritter!

A lot of it in 2nd gear,20mph,and I could still feel my back-end going.

But this was mainly a reaction to the rear wheels sliding all over the place……..

Yes I did, PF, thanks for asking.

I’ve been in contact with the club and the police.

Nothing concrete to report (apart from the big daud of it I landed on!).

    Hail Hail!

  17. Been in the Leicester area this week bannergate a non story in Engerlund

Very disappointed to read NL emotive comments on bannergate! Why does Neil indulge the hacks in the LL with these type of comments which assist in the hype and sensationalism of negative Celtic stories

Have the Udinese game recorded will view later, sad we have finished 3rd in a Europa league group, no kudos in failure for me

Now Celtic can focus on domestic success, with Scottish football team standards at an all time low, SPL title success is a must for the biggest club in Scotland.

  18. First time I have actually seen the said banner.

I assume it we an ‘official’ Green Brigade number? Thought they had wised up a bit, so really hope it wasn’t them.

back to the league and put the pressure right onto the rotten mob

  20. Tom mc. U congratulate u on your 50 years

I do agree with part of your comments about certain members of our support

However mo need to attack the celts for change group, as they like me just want to remove a CEO who profits personally from our in field demise

  21. Lots of positives to take from the Euro experience;

    More experience for the players.

More experience for the management team.

Two games unbeaten away in Europe for the first time in years.

    Additional income.

    More co-efficient points.

We were very luck to get back into the competition and were just one bad decision away from progressing.

    Maybe not success but progress.

I can’t understand why Celtic fans are still settling for the likes of Samaras, Kayal, Hooper, Ki or the three liabilities at the back especially that Cha fool who alone cost us 4 points in the section? they can hardly compete in the SPL let alone Europe! they either panic or disappear when the going gets tough and have one good game out of ten, thank the good lord for young Forrest and our ON LOAN goalkeeperat at least they saved a bit of face? Lennon should be gone! he’s had long enough and is still living on starved fans sympathy! To be pleased at drawing with an underpar and obviously off form Udinese team (especially old man Di Natale) and with the chances we had is nothing short of accepting 2nd best we’re no better off than when Mowbray was manager we just have a more complicated midfield with Brown forced out right and Forrest forced out left to accomodate a shirker and a one pass wonder no doubt we will be left again with another clear out of rubbish when Lennons sympathy vote runs out as I can’t see him doing the decent thing … Come back Strach’ all is forgiven!

I strongly disagree with your sentiments and your support for the current campaign to criminalise Celtic fans who sing songs you dislike. Your evident rage would, in my opinion, be far more appropriately directed elsewhere. Perhaps those who celebrate racism might be more deserving recipients of the terms ‘loud mouths’ and ‘cowards’?

Please note that I have chosen not to join you in throwing insults or denigrating fellow Celtic fans. I’d post a more detailed retort but:

    a) The abusive nature of your comments speaks volumes about you and

    b) I obviously need to go and change my wet underpants…

    Yours in Celtic…

  25. Morning all, and happy birthday Tom.

I see the club has reacted swiftly to the banner-guy. This is probably a smart move that might nip in the bud any UEFA moves to punish us, and, combined with NL’s very strong comments, leaves no-one in any doubt about the club’s official position.

The whole sorry saga is, however, a complete mess. And essentially it boils down to this:

    We are at war.

With the media, with the SNP government, and with the police. I would urge all fans, including and especially the GB, to bear this simple fact in mind when they are representing Celtic. This war, is, sadly, a war we cannot win. Because it is fought in the court of public opinion, which is still immensely influenced by the mainstream media, and which will always twist our actions into something worse than they are, and will use every trick in the book to fabricate faux outrage across the land.

The police, salivating at being given draconian new powers and eager to please their dominant political masters, will happily feed the media’s appetite with negative stories about us, or report us whenever they get a chance. The club cannot police tens of thousands of individuals and is always liable to get blindsided….

We, as fans, have to be smart.

One of the best protests I have seen was the GB’s silent unfurling of banners during the first half of a game against (Motherwell? ICT?) It was brilliant. Perfectly judged, subtle, deadly, and left plod completely unable to do anything but sit there and fume.

Compare this to the crude, vulgar, unimaginative banner in Udine. C’mon, lads, how long did it take you to think that one up? Not smart.

All this is happening against a backdrop of the potential collapse of two of our greatest footballing does, Hertz and the Darnel. And it is happening at a time when Neil and the bhoys are hitting their stride on the pitch. The prize of the a league title and a Hun-free-Scotland are very real. We need to focus on these, back the team, don’t give plod or the media an inch, and I promise you, we will be partying like never before at the end of this season.

It certainly was PL job to answer for the club, PL hides behind NL far to often

Agreed SPL title is a must, the squad and management must now go into a fully focused drive for the title.

  27. Indio- I don’t know who makes up all these Hector/Craigy shorts but he/she is a genius.

Lubo- I was trying to dig out the U-tube clip of Gordon Dalziel after we were reinstated into the Europa League, giving it all doom and gloom for Celtic, not being able to cope with SPL & EL. Hilarious stuff.

I totally agree with you, this European experience will have boosted the confidence of the players, they now know they are well capable of handling anything in the Scottish game this season. Look for example how much Forster’s game has come on.

Only 2 icebergs on the horizon- MIBbery and over-confidence.

  28. Too true, there a storm in the press about a banner and some smoke bombs, while down at the bigot dome the MBB continues his sleekit and shady business practices.
