Frustrations for what could have been

779

There are frustrations for what could have been.  Leipzig did not have us under great pressure at any time in the game, but concentration dropped for three minutes, which settled the outcome.

I initially blamed Dedryck for the opening goal, but on second viewing, the incident was more nuanced.  Eboue Kouassi almost got a touch on the ball, meaning Dedryck waited on the second ball instead of attacking the cross.  Eboue himself only reacted when the Leipzig attacker nearest the right wing failed to get a touch on the ball.

Cristian Gamboa went to ground and didn’t get near the ball for the cross leading to the second goal.  Unforgiveable, but we are parachuting a player into a high level of football when his annual game time is measured in dozens of minutes.

Despite defeats in Germany and Austria, Celtic are not out of contention.  Leipzig are nowhere near as good as Salzburg.  We have beaten better teams than them at a packed Celtic Park.  Get a win next time out, or even a draw, and the remaining fixtures favour us.

By the time we go to Trondheim, Rosenborg will be out of the tournament.  Salzburg end the group at Celtic Park, when they will have already have top spot confirmed, and want to avoid injuries, suspensions and hopefully be keen to give experience to squad players.

I have spoken highly of Jozo for years, but the sight of him leaving the field on a stretcher after going down holding his ankle confirmed any remaining doubt about how appropriate his physical frame is for competitive sport.

Was Brendan resting players with an eye on Sunday?  It looks like it.  Mikael made an appearance from the bench, while Filip Benkovic was also fit enough for the bench.  If these two only have one game in them this week, the semi-final at Murrayfield is the wise choice.

People were being name called for having an opinion and then opinions were being taken and justified to the nth degree.

Thankfully it appears to have settled again.

    Thanks for caring, Gerry.

  10. That is terrible news about the helicopter crash.

I find it very hard to understand why Police Scotland have had helicopters hovering over Celtic Park for so many games that did not warrant their use. Thankfully they are not being used as much as a few years ago.

As you know I sit feet away with Dallas and we can disagree about Celtic (he is usually correct) the blog would be garbage if it was all back slapping Celtic stuff… sometimes the best civil disagreements are the best reading, we all live a different life, we all see Celtic differently and that’s what the debate should be about … I sort of don’t understand the posters who seem to enjoy Celtic not winning but again that might be there Celtic we all have a different Celtic :-)

  19. Elton John was part of LJBs backing group. Until one night he stormed off stage as the audience were more interested in their ” chicken in a basket”.

    Cabaret no more for Elton.

In my opinion Vince Clarke’s greatest partner was Alison Moyet. That lassie could sing a bit.

Andy Bell was good voice but better showmanship. Freddie Mercury lite ?

  21. Just back from an enjoyable young Hoops Hallow’en party at the Kerrydale Suite. Not a rip-roaring success, but just being in Paradise is enough for me and grandson…although I wish I could walk past that bliddy superstore without forking out for another strip. He’s now amassed more tops in 6 years than I’ve managed in 67! Still, it got me out of doing the donkeys, dogs, cats, ponies, guinea pigs, ducks, hens, tortoises and Masie the pig.

Looking forward to hearing Cosy Corner Boy’s commentary from MAH’s gathering.

  22. An ancestory of legends (ish)

KT has now played 150 games for celtic.

his competitive senior debut for Celtic on 22 April 2015 against Dundee, in a team that included Scott Brown.

Broonie made his debut on August 5th , 2007 against Kilmarnock in a 0-0 draw,

16 medals to his name now, In that team that day was Stephen McManus.

Stephen made his debut in 2004, in a Celtic team that beat hibs 4-0 including 2 goals from Henrik Larsson.

Henke made an infamous debut also against hibs in august 1997,

“You don’t want to walk in another man’s footsteps, you want to create your own.”

    The team included Tom Boyd.

Tom joined in February 1992, debut a week later against Aidrie, winning 2-0 playing alongside Paul McStay

McStay signed for Celtic aged sixteen from Celtic Boys Club in 1981. He made his first team debut for Celtic on 23 January 1982 in a 4–0 win over Queen of the South in the Scottish Cup. A rare goal that day for one Daniel Fergus McGrain

Now the years can roll back.

McGrain made his first-team debut for Celtic as a substitute in a Scottish League Cup tie against Dundee United at Tannadice on 26 August 1970. McNeill was injured so the longest serving player on the park was Tommy Gemmell.

Debut: Aberdeen away 5-1 league 5 January 1963, Hughes scores 3, Crain scores 2. Captain in Only One Billy McNeill

Billy First game: Clyde home 2-0 League Cup 23 August 1958, in a team that included Tully, Mochan, Auld and Peacock,

thats 60 years connections, more tomorrow.
