Frustrations for what could have been

779

There are frustrations for what could have been.  Leipzig did not have us under great pressure at any time in the game, but concentration dropped for three minutes, which settled the outcome.

I initially blamed Dedryck for the opening goal, but on second viewing, the incident was more nuanced.  Eboue Kouassi almost got a touch on the ball, meaning Dedryck waited on the second ball instead of attacking the cross.  Eboue himself only reacted when the Leipzig attacker nearest the right wing failed to get a touch on the ball.

Cristian Gamboa went to ground and didn’t get near the ball for the cross leading to the second goal.  Unforgiveable, but we are parachuting a player into a high level of football when his annual game time is measured in dozens of minutes.

Despite defeats in Germany and Austria, Celtic are not out of contention.  Leipzig are nowhere near as good as Salzburg.  We have beaten better teams than them at a packed Celtic Park.  Get a win next time out, or even a draw, and the remaining fixtures favour us.

By the time we go to Trondheim, Rosenborg will be out of the tournament.  Salzburg end the group at Celtic Park, when they will have already have top spot confirmed, and want to avoid injuries, suspensions and hopefully be keen to give experience to squad players.

I have spoken highly of Jozo for years, but the sight of him leaving the field on a stretcher after going down holding his ankle confirmed any remaining doubt about how appropriate his physical frame is for competitive sport.

Was Brendan resting players with an eye on Sunday?  It looks like it.  Mikael made an appearance from the bench, while Filip Benkovic was also fit enough for the bench.  If these two only have one game in them this week, the semi-final at Murrayfield is the wise choice.

Sid 1888 and Park Road, the best non Celtic top I have seen for ages.

Derry City , Sligo Rovers and Finn harps have trolled them , jokingly putting an image of their respective town’s celebs on their away tops . The Derry City fake away top has Nadine Coyle on it instead of the Undertones , dear oh dear. She may be better looking than the Undertones but musically nowhere near them lol

Is defending the Treble the current monkey on our back, like extending our unbeaten run was ?

    ————————-

That is certainly one train of thought, especially, if as per Paul 67’s intimation that we are prioritising a league cup game over European football.

Success in the league cup will not help us acquire much needed quality players, but European football may.

  5. I think Hertz will feel they have a genuine chance……..they’ve certainly been built-up with sleekit praise being lavished on wee Nasty thanks to guid-ole-boys in the meeja.

Whether they surrender like they did against the huns remains to be seen……..but it’s a huge opportunity for Brendan and Co to get back the feel-good factor.

We play them and scoddland on Sunday. If eveer we needed a united, raucous support it’s in games like these.

    Greenpinata,

The consensus on here appeared to be split on which game should have been prioritised.

However, if you consider that Brown is injured, Rogic nursing an injury, Bencovic similar and Forrest suspended, then it is difficult to say that BR was prioritising tomorrow’s game.

  9. Pans Bhoy……

  10. Heard it all now,”Is defending the Treble, becoming a monkey on our back”.If it is,its a monkey I would love every season.Probably just me,by the sounds of the posts, but I was brought up,thnking League Cups,Scottish Cups,Leagues, were the be all and end all,of our season.Great joy among the support, when we won any.Too many years watching when we won nothing.Europe only became important from 1967 till 1972,even then,it was a level playing field,in which we could compete. After that,it was back to trying to get back on top in Scotland.Too young to remember,or short memories from too many on here.A victory over Hearts tomorrow, more important to me than a r

esult against Leipzig. No one in Scottish football ever countenanced any team ever winning a Treble Treble.Still not good enough.Far too many do not deserve this team or manager. If we dont win the trophies, the scum will.Would that make you happy? But dont mind me,carry on in your misery,I will carry on celebrating every trophy we win.Not going on for days about trophies we can never win.Not at present.

  11. Anyone had a chance to have a look at ‘Bohemians FC’ new away kit. An inspired homage to Bob Marley and the gig he played at the Irish teams ground in 1980. A truly inspirational bit of salesmanship, kit has sold out by pre order even before it has been released for sale.

It is the 2nd coolest strip on the planet after the Hoops of course

Now that is what I call an away kit, not like that dayglo yellow piece of crap the bhoys have to wear.

  12. Apparently Thursday’s game was the seventh instances in European football in the last two years where Celtic have lost two goals or more in the space of five minutes or less.

I am sure that after each one, Brendan has said the same thing about learning from mistakes.

JAVEA_BHOY @ 10.29 – I’ve been to Javea twice in the last 3 years and loved it both times. We rented an apartment in Puerta Real complex just up from the front near the Port end and it was fantastic. What sets Javea apart for us is the variety – the Port area, the more commercial Arenal beach, and then there’s the quaint Old Town. I’m sure we’ll be back there one day soon.

Our support is large and diverse. However we have a substantial amount of our support ” boycotting ” all cup games.

Yes it will still be the biggest Scottish football crowd for circa 29 years, but much of our support have little interest in attending.
