Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

  1. OK, the book list has gone well today; soooooooo, to keep you from fretting about the transfer window, how about your top 10 albums of all time? I was tempted to limit it to vinyl, but that will rule out too many philistines :>)

A few wee rules – 1 album per artist/band in the top 10 (I could’ve had a Bowie, Dylan, Floyd, Who top 10 etc.), nae compilations and nae live albums.

It’s taken me a while to compile on and off during the day and after many edits, here’s mine:

    1. Hunky Dory – David Bowie

    2. Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd

    3. Blood on the Tracks – Bob Dylan

    4. The Second Coming – The Stone Roses

    5. Back to Black – Amy Winehouse

    6. Sandanista – The Clash

    7. Electric Warrior – T Rex

    8. Songs From a Room – Leonard Cohen

    9. Queen II – Queen

    10. Just Enough Education to Perform – Stereophonics

    KTF

  2. Sticking my neck out here. If Simunovic is in Turin, it can only mean Celtic are close to signing another defender. If we are not successful in getting it over the line, Simunovic stays put.

  3. Will be interesting to see our matchday programme for the new Rangers and if it avoids the question of them being a new club. Hope it does not refer to any history and trophies won by the dead club.

Parkhead… just thinking about it… the one I would LOVE to see Celtic wear, is a take on the Wolfsburg strip from a few seasons ago …. the one with the big cross across the front … like a green Flag of St. Andrews… would love to see that!

  5. Saw the highlights from the development squad game against Killie the other day we won 3-4, it was either the second or third Killie goal that was a direct fault of Boyata’s, he gave the ball to a Killie player about thirty yards from goal, it was a shocking pass, can’t seem to find it, but trust me it was shocking, with mucho to respect to the bhoy, but whoever had him down as a footballer really should be thinking of changing career pronto.

That sounds a lot better than the 56 varieties that we have been plagued with in recent seasons. Personally, I have a copy of the old old one which was a white jersey with green collar and cuffs and a large red Celtic cross. They don’t make them like that anymore, more’s the pity.

Parkhead … the one from 1888?! I knew you were a BIT older than me…. but wow! :)

  15. My late entry for top 10 books:-

    1) setting free the bears- John Irving- life affirming even after your political God has died

    2) Ghostwritten- David Mitchell- he managed to make a hint of sci–fi acceptable so long as it is buried within a good story with a proper narrative

    3) Darkness at Noon- The horror at the Heart of the Soviet totalitarian system exposed. Better than Orwell

    4) The Bone Clocks- I hate fantasy more than I hate sci-fi but Mitchell again manages a light enough dose to make it seem like a more straightforward novel

    5) The Great American Novel- Philip Roth- hugely funny book about a fictional baseball team

    6) The Corrections- Jonathan Franzen- horrible struggle through the first 80 pages but it grows into a strong defence of decent American values- even mid-West ones

    7) The Fatal Shore- Robert Hughes- history of Australia but the prose is top class especially the landscape descriptions

    8) Redemption Falls- Joseph O’Connor- beats Star of the Sea for me

    9) A brief history of 7 killings- Marlon James- episodic and confusing but layered like a reggae song

10 ) Pale Fire- Nabokov- complicated and cryptic but an achievement of book building

Like favourite songs, I could shoehorn in 5 or 6 different authors if I was choosing at other times but Irving, Hughes and Mitchell will always be there.

The Green Man … MD, and Lee Morgan, inspired me to take up the trumpet …. so, this year, never really having played an instrument, I bought a trumpet, and now take lessons once a week … I had visions of hot summers nights, me sitting on my back porch, playing a sad sweet trumpet … a la Miles or Chet …. not quite!

the truth is I cant carry a tune in a bucket …. I am AWFUL!!!!!! but, there is something very therapeutic about it …. I love it!!!! …

  25. Hi Mike

Since you posted the link to Kind of Blue a few weeks ago I have been listening to it. I confess to never having known of it a jazz is not my favourite genre but it is just perfect.

US open started. Great performance by Kyle Edmund to eliminate Gasquet.

Decent chance for Andy to win another major. He could simultaneously hold the US and Wimbledon titles, the Davis Cup and Olympic gold. Even you will have to acknowledge that!

I was in Stockholm yesterday. There was a Bjorn Borg store in the shopping mall that we visited and I was thinking of you.

    Will be in touch soon.
