Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

  1. Given the way the news filtered out about other recent signings – Toure/Sinclair/Gamboa a few days before they were nailed, it is concerning that we are hearing nothing on a defensive midfielder.

We are seriously weak in midfield, and we badly need a ball winner/retainer to add steel in there. Never mind the Beer Shava away game, this was also evident for sustained periods v Aberdeen on Saturday, as it was versus Hearts at Tynecastle.

We will be destroyed in CL games without this I believe. Do not underestimate the tactical importance of a good DM – think Wanyama protecting Ambrose & Wilson v Barca.

  3. Glad to see Griffith and Tierney withdraw from Scotland squad. Both have had a busy start to the season and have been carrying injuries. A two week break and they’ll be refreshed and ready to go.

    Timmy ….

    how ya doing, eh?

As my old granny would say, just because your friends stick their asses in the fire, does that mean you have to?

If we are going to measure ourselves against what the other clubs do, then are we any different from them?

Why bother supporting Celtic then? Why not follow Hibs, or Hearts, or Sevco? Because we are different … or at least, we are supposed to be.

Personally, I was raised to believe that Celtic stood for something more than just winning trophies, or finishing ahead of ‘them’.

So far, our club hasn’t spoken out, and I am concerned enough that I wont put any money in until we get the truth. But I will still follow Celtic and hope they do well.

If, at some point, either facts are revealed which show Celtic is sleeping with the dogs, or nothing is said such that it is the only conclusion that can be drawn, then I will walk away.

I am not saying anyone else has to do that. We all have to do what we believe is right.

For me, this is what I can live with.

    Wee BGFC-

Great links to the bands, thank you! Blackberry Smoke is a great find.

Here’s some others for you to take a look at. All are in the southern rock catagory, or as a friend of mine in the music business calls it: The Hillbilly Howl :-))

    Beitthemeans : “Alabama Summer” https://youtu.be/DUeDCCPvm0A

Left Lane Cruiser : “The Pusher” https://youtu.be/bJZYT4NTCCY

The Black Diamond Heavies : “Fever in my blood” https://youtu.be/-l1jj12eP3Q

The Parlor Mob : “Can’t keep no good boy down” https://youtu.be/p_TN6VN_m1o

All these artists are acknowledged artists on their respective instruments, but let’s just say you’ll never see them on the Grammys ;-) I have seen Black Diamond Heavies, Beitthemeans and The Parlor Mob live and my ears are STILL ringing. Hope you like these!

Also, it f you enjoy this genre of music, try taking a look at Alive Records, an independent record label out of Los Angeles. Some great bands to look at on their site, and lots of free demos.

I’ve caught up on your post to me last night about Luke Donnelly.

Yes Luke had a few injuries last season. He ended the season injured and has been playing catch up on his pre season fitness as he was still injured.

It says a lot for Alloa that he chose them, he had the option of 2 championship teams but chose Alloa.

A disgrace what you all have had to endure. I read the Chuckles Green link. I was amused that the first question he was asked was what school did you go to? Seriously all the way to Australia and that’s the first question those morons ask him.

I agree about 3.1 JPGordon game as a 13 year old at that game, it was the first time I had experienced blatant cheating. When I got home I was trying to tell my Dad, he replied that’s why I won’t go to Ibrox. I’ve watched too many games like that there.

  10. Currently waiting to see the 2015/16 accounts.

Transfers and player trading aside I don’t think they will look very pretty.

That then is the BR baseline.

The state of the club that he is now in charge of.

Not sure of the bonus structure now in place.

How much money will need to be paid out to cover the CL bonus?

The way things are shaping up — 10% at least of our squad wage bill is the CL bonus.

I would not be surprised if the manager’s bonus is 5 times that in percentage terms.

The CL now defines the club.

Not sure if that is good or bad but that is where we are now at.

    Stage 1 is nearly complete.

    Stage 2 is the 31st Aug 2017.

Stage 3 is the QF’s or SF’s of the CL — it might be while yet.

Main thing is we are moving in the right direction.

  11. BOURNESOUPRECIPE

Yep, agreed….and it doesn’t matter if we get the right man tomorrow…..though I think the position is important enough not to leave till last minute.

Nothing my end, best I can offer is I hear we will do other business but no further information. Denayer was one that I was told if Simunovic went to Torino. Personally I would be surprised to f we signed anyone else, which is a pity.

Personally I think we have strengthened the side and I am looking forward to the season ahead with the acquisitions we have made and the way Brendan has the Team playing. However, I am disappointed that we have not yet strengthened the midfield; this in my view will be the biggest disappointment.

Hey, we have about 28 and a half hours left. I live in hope.

  16. Preferably we will sign a midfield player tomorrow of genuine quality. However if we don’t I trust that Brendan has his eye on the future. We don’t need to sign another player right now. We want to sign one. There is a big difference. What we have will easily win the league and a cup or two barring referee influence. In addition one player would be unlikely to make a major difference in the CL. So we could already be looking to next seasons CL qualifiers. If Brendan can’t land his targets we should keep the money and try again in January or next summer, also with an eye on any good quality players who are out of contract at the end of this season.

The bigger picture is consistent CL qualification and 10 in a row…and beyond. If we get it right nobody will get near us. We can only go back to them with our own mistakes, they’ll never catch us.

  17. BIGCHIPSUK – 10 IN A ROW (2001-2010):

You make a valid point but thus far and if Simunovic completes his move we have made a profit so far. I am happy with what I have seen of our acquisitions but I do believe we have enough without the UCL money to get ourselves a quality midfielder, whether we get them on loan, pay £1, £3 or £5 million for them. As long as we live within our means and pay our Taxes…:)

    Keep the Faith!

I have not seen any post imploring the board to spend the reputed 20-30 million champions league money?

I and a few others have only asked that we strengthen the central midfield area which is our achilles heel.

We seem to be around even or showing a slight profit if Jozo deal goes through so we should be able to spend on a defensive mid as they don’t all cost 20-30 million.

There’s a heap of work that goes into finding players who have the potential to be that good later in their careers, but are at the right stages of their career to have shown enough but have yet to be picked up by the clubs where they can realize it.

The scouting department has got a lot wrong recently but we shouldn’t forget the good work they have done.

I can’t see any point in trying to sign Mc.Carthy at this time.

He is presently injured, has had no pre-season and will be assessed in the next couple of days, to see if he needs a groin operation.

Perhaps January, if we are still looking for his type of player and he can prove his fitness, would be time enough to bring him in.

It’s not that he or anyone else, for that matter is going to make a major difference to our qualification chances, is it?

  26. I’m sure the club have a list from Brendan’s wants and don’t wants, he either gets them or he doesent, it hast to be right for both clubs, the agent , and the players family and lastly the player, people seem to think it’s just like going to the state, it’s a very complicated procedure and every one sits it out till the last min. And not just CFC, 24 hrs to go you REALY need to calm down, but then again some just can’t wait to stick to the board, it’s just the way it is with the malcontents, trust the manager..
