Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

Parkheadcumsalford …. I was never a huge fan of Eco’s novels, but LOVE his articles… Travels in Hyperreality is a book I can pick up and read again and again ….

A friend once said to me that Dante’s Comedy should only be read in Italian… and I have heard the same about GGM’s works…. and that might be right…. but, even translated, they are still pretty magical.

I am very happy with the window so far this season, lots off wage bill and good quality brought in

Hope Henderson manages to stay at the club this season, I think the bhoy has dig as well as quality. We all make mistakes a la St Johnstone but if he learns from it all the better

Agreed, mate. Dunno whether the injury was worse than it looked or whether he had an aversion for posts after that!

His uncharacteristic howler-and the characteristic press crucifixion which followed-v the Czechs probably didn’t help either.

    But until then,great keeper.

What should the club refer to them as? They have engineered themselves in to two entities:

    RANGERS INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL CLUB PLC

    THE RANGERS FOOTBALL CLUB LIMITED

I ask given that we are

    CELTIC PLC

Although our badge says “The Celtic Football Club”

Are you really that bothered that the Club have dropped the ‘The’ from their name?

  9. I also think Janko has potential.

    He was terrible in Israel.

But the system and fellow players placed an unfair burden on him that night.

He impressed with his courage as he never hid unlike some.

He is young and athletic so hopefully Brendan will develop him.

  11. Not overjoyed at losing Jozo (assuming it goes through). Would much rather be reading that Efe AND Boyata were speaking to other clubs. Having said that he’s no use to us sitting in the treatment room. (How does he pass Torino’s medical by the way?). So all in all probably best for club and player that he moves on, particularly if the fee of around £3m-£4m is correct. Whatever our NET spend in this window ends up at, the only important thing is do we have a stronger squad exiting the window to the one that entered? Obviously we all know the squad needed trimmed, so we can’t simply just buy this guy and that guy without others going in the opposite direction.

So. Is the squad stronger, and trimmer? Most definitely. That’ll do for me. Progress.

  12. From the Celtic site:

AS soon as new Bhoy Cristian Gamboa heard Celtic were interested in his services he was determined for the deal to be done.

The 26-year-old today completed his move from English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion, penning a three-year contract with the Scottish champions.

He becomes Brendan Rodgers fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Moussa Dembele, Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair and Dorus de Vries.

The speedy full-back has amassed almost 50 caps for Costa Rica and helped them reach the quarter-finals of the 2016 World Cup in Brazil.

    Weeminger…

Yes and no. I think it is wrong, but if it was just that, and the club had otherwise stepped up and done the right thing, I could probably live with it.

We all knew that the zombies and the league would try to pretend that nothing happened… but I had hoped that our club would take a stand.

But, with every passing day, where the Club/custodians dont speak out, and little things like this get dropped into the conversation by the Club, it seems more and more likely that we are happy to see them ‘back’ and will go along with the false narrative ….

For me, the club’s integrity is worth more than a Champion’s league trophy…. and shouldn’t be for sale.

For me it’s less of an issue because no matter what they had called themselves (if such a close name hadn’t been allowed) eg Glasgow City Rangers, they would have attracted the same core fans. Fans who care as much about hating Celtic as they do about supporting their own team.

Let’s say they had adopted that new name, would anybody have expected the Club to call them out as a new team? No because it would be obvious.

So given that it’s really only down to the name is it really a surprise that the club hasn’t come out and stated the obvious? It’s still obvious to anybody with half a braincell that they’re a new club, so really why bother trying to convince people that won’t accept it?

    It’s only a name.

  17. The BBC report on the Scottish cup final charges states that *’Rangers players were unable to collect their medals’. How about ‘they chose not to come out and pick them up’.

  23. BT,

It most certainly does, in parts. Doesn’t follow that the core meaning can’t be expressed but it is why there are serious discussions among biblical scholars about the precise meaning of particular words and in particular contexts.

You would really need to be fluent in Hebrew , Greek and Latin (maybe even Aramaic) to fully appreciate the original, imo, and maybe especially the poetry. Has your jaw dropped reading any of Jesus’ parables? I imagine a lot of those’ listening did precisely that, although that isn’t really to do with any English translation.

  24. We have brought in 6 new players this window, which is more than half-a-team.

Many on CQN have been demanding that as well as new acqisitions, we trim the squad. So why are some people complaining that we have offloaded a player who cost us a few million but has been out injured for a whole year?

It is obvious that when the bid came in from Torino, a decision had to be made, and it was decided that we should cut our losses. We are constantly being told that Brendan is calling the shots, until something happens that they don’t like, then all of a sudden it’s big bad Peter’s hand at work.

You can’t have it both ways.
