Glib, shameless, fit and proper

1532

Before digesting news reports that Dave King is set to return to Scottish football as a director of Newco Rangers, it’s probably worth a caveat.  Today’s ‘news’ has the same heritage as pretty much every false steer emanating from Ibrox over the past decade.  Honest Dave King may well hope to take over at Ibrox but I could just as easily believe he has no intentions of getting involved.

Two months ago King accepted liability for 41 counts of contravening the South African Income Tax Act, while agreeing to pay the resultant bill, the equivalent of £46m.  By act of sheer comic genius he is being heralded as the most appropriate person to take control of Newco Rangers, the club brought about by the disastrous income tax affairs of Oldco Rangers, while King was on the board.

Lord Nimmo Smith prevaricated on some issues in his report into Oldco but he was unequivocal in his condemnation of the directors, including King. South African judge, Brian Southwood, described King as a “glib and shameless liar” in 2011.

In every practical sense this man is a perfect fit for the Rangers group of clubs.  Every scrap of information available on how he conducts his affairs screams ‘Rangers tradition’.

As for Fit and Proper?  Don’t make me quote a second judge!

In the event the SFA have to make a Fit and Proper decision on King they will have to consider Nimmo Smith’s view.  It is not even remotely credible that the SFA are competent to rule on King while their president was subject to the same criticism from Nimmo Smith (although Judge Southwood provides a convenient out).

The narrative being peddled today is a final throw of the dice by some, nothing more.  ‘A guy will hunn’ers of millions is coming in to make everything OK’.  Aye, sure thing.

    Axe the Act

Yesterday, Thursday 10th October 2013 saw the voters of Glasgow Ward 5 – Govan take to the polls to cast their vote in the local by-election. It also marked the end of weeks of campaigning by Thomas Rannachan supported by Fans Against Criminalisation all under the banner of Axe the Act, in reference to the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

Firstly, we wish to thank all of our supporters for all the time, effort and hard work they put into the campaign. The backing we had was indicative of how many football fans and more, feel against this illiberal law and attack on our civil liberties. We have given a good account of ourselves and proven to the Scottish Government that we will not sit idly by and tolerate this criminalisation of football fans.

Labour won the vacant seat which now leaves Nicola Sturgeon without any councillors in her own ward. We have shown that we can and will take support away from her party until such times as they take positive action over the Act. It has been a learning curve for us along the way and we can be proud of what we achieved. During campaigning and on polling day, many of us successfully persuaded voters to cast a preference for Axe the Act, showing that our reasoned arguments make sense.

We acknowledge and appreciate that many voters, whilst supportive felt they still had to cast a vote for a main party, given that we are a single issue and they had other concerns which they feel need addressing. We take encouragement from this, that voters across the spectrum are aware of and feel strongly against the Act. It shows, as we have always said, that this issue affects people from all over and not just football fans and it is great they share our concerns. This is something we can definitely work with going forward.

Today is a very important day, perhaps the most important to date, as we move on and continue to fight against the Act. It doesn’t end now that the election is over with and decided. It is just the beginning…

I have went through with the same auld rubbish ,day ,after day, for the last thirty years,.same auld status.

I am not afraid of change , i can see a bigger, brighter future(whether it can be delivered ,that’s another ?). I have a vision .

We have had the same old *rubbish the last 30 years ,had to deal with it.we are still here standing,..Strong.

Can it be as bad as we have had before ,are we just scared of change ?

Great effort by all concerned! Single issues are difficult, but they are necessary since none of the major parties will campaign on them. If I am not mistaken Govan is now the only Glasgow City constituency that does not have an SNP Councillor. Some kind of message there.

    Friar Tuck..

    Fullname: John Donnelly McCluskey

    aka: Friar, John McCluskey

    Born: 24 October 1960

    Birthplace: Hamilton, South Lanarkshire

    Signed: 1973 (S form); 3 August 1976

    Left: retired 1979

    Position: Striker

Only game: Jeunesse Esch 6-1 away 28 September 1977 European cup

    Internationals: Scotland youth

The younger brother of striker George, John McCluskey was a schoolboy sensation who was expected to have a massive future in the game. He emulated George when he scored for Scottish schoolboys at Wembley on June 15th 1975. Before Paul McStay he was Celtic’s youngest ever S form signing.

A product of Celtic Boys Club John was an intelligent forward who signed ‘S’ forms with Celtic in 1973 when he was just 13-years-old.

However despite all his early promise John was to make just one competitive appearance for the Hoops as his young career was destroyed by thrombosis which meant a knock to his leg could prove fatal. His one game came as a sub in Luxembourg on September 28th 1977 as Celtic defeated Jeunesse Esch 6-0 in the European Cup.

It was a sad end to his career, as he was to put it “I’ve been given tablets to thin the clot and no doubt I’ll do all right but I know I’ll never play football again”. A difficult comment for any aspiring player to have to say.

  12. Hundependence

Moonbeams used this word earlier today. An excellent word as even though I’d never heard it before I knew exactly what he meant. I have some short-term, slightly selfish concerns about independence but I have no concerns about hundependence, the exact opposite in fact.

Some people on here seem to believe that the country will be run by the orange order and that somehow the british state is protecting us from them. I find it impossible the british would do anything for us. Somehow all the things we complain about the sfa, criminalising celtic fans, masonic judges etc are evidence that things would be much worse under independence. On the contrary I believe, although anti-catholicism is alive and well, it has been driven underground and the educated classes are embarrassed by it. In an independent country they’d know well enough that they couldn’t allow scotland to be seen as a backward, bigoted place and will be very sensitive to international opinion where now our issues are just seen as a small regional issue within the much larger british state.

Further, if the union jack is no longer a valid national symbol those who wish us ill will have lost a large part of their identity. In northern ireland those who see themselves as british will have real difficulty in clinging to a country that doesn’t exist. The whole rangers-unionist identity will be left in tatters. They won’t know what or who they are much less be able to run the country with the intention of discriminating against while also having to keep it a secret.

Not campaiging for a yes vote I’d just hate someone to vote no just on this issue.

  13. They are terrified of us now…..now is the time to vote yes….we can change the government and mindset and make it our country….

  14. On the independence debate, i have an open mind not made my mind up either way, although a yes vote is not a vote for the SNP, i shudder to think of the triumphalism of Bawface Salmond and Stuck up Sturgeon giving it yaldy!

And whats the alternative to the SNP in Scotland? Johanna Lahmonts Labour, jeezo no wonder thousands are on the fence, no inspiring politicians out there the only one i think of with charisma and morals is Galloway and he is in the “No” camp.
