Glib, shameless, fit and proper

1532

Before digesting news reports that Dave King is set to return to Scottish football as a director of Newco Rangers, it’s probably worth a caveat.  Today’s ‘news’ has the same heritage as pretty much every false steer emanating from Ibrox over the past decade.  Honest Dave King may well hope to take over at Ibrox but I could just as easily believe he has no intentions of getting involved.

Two months ago King accepted liability for 41 counts of contravening the South African Income Tax Act, while agreeing to pay the resultant bill, the equivalent of £46m.  By act of sheer comic genius he is being heralded as the most appropriate person to take control of Newco Rangers, the club brought about by the disastrous income tax affairs of Oldco Rangers, while King was on the board.

Lord Nimmo Smith prevaricated on some issues in his report into Oldco but he was unequivocal in his condemnation of the directors, including King. South African judge, Brian Southwood, described King as a “glib and shameless liar” in 2011.

In every practical sense this man is a perfect fit for the Rangers group of clubs.  Every scrap of information available on how he conducts his affairs screams ‘Rangers tradition’.

As for Fit and Proper?  Don’t make me quote a second judge!

In the event the SFA have to make a Fit and Proper decision on King they will have to consider Nimmo Smith’s view.  It is not even remotely credible that the SFA are competent to rule on King while their president was subject to the same criticism from Nimmo Smith (although Judge Southwood provides a convenient out).

The narrative being peddled today is a final throw of the dice by some, nothing more.  ‘A guy will hunn’ers of millions is coming in to make everything OK’.  Aye, sure thing.

    From the Scotsman.

The occasion of Bill Shankly’s 100th birthday recently triggered a few reminiscences in various places. But there could have been a special knees-up at Firhill Stadium had anyone on the staff been old enough to remember the great man’s wartime service with Partick Thistle.

This was occasioned by his temporary posting to RAF Bishopbriggs on the outskirts of Glasgow – and by the decree of the omnipotent secretary of the Scottish Football Association, Sir George Graham. What very few people know was that Shanks had deliberately requested the transfer to Bishopbriggs so that he could fulfil an ambition to play for Rangers, even if only as a wartime guest.

His application, however, got no further than the desk of Sir George, who loftily informed Bill – by then already a regular in the Scotland team – that if he intended to guest for any club, he was obliged to do so for the one nearest his posting. In this case, he was assured, it would not be Rangers, but the (slightly) less exotic Jags. There was, however, one matchless compensation about his billeting in Bishopbriggs – it was where he met his wife, Nessie, a member of the WAAF in the same station.

I’m not sure what you mean by another level. SF strategy is completely independent of what happens in Scotland.

I respect your sincerity and suspect we agree on many things. I just don’t subscribe to the idea that Scottish independence will have a material effect on Ireland’s national question.

The article you copied earlier made mention of Bobby Sands. I really object to that, Bobby Sands had no position on Scottish independence because he was an Irishman concerned with his own country.

Sands seen Scotland as foreign in the same sense he saw England as being foreign. I understand how being an Irish Republican may shape your views on 2014, however, I don’t believe Irish republican icons should be brought into a Scottish debate.

Good luck to you and yours no matter what happens with the vote.

    —————————————-

Where to begin with this diatribe?

I find it difficult to believe that Bobby Sands wouldn’t be interested in any debate, concerning the question of Scottish independence.

Perhaps you knew the man personally, however his writings,in relation to subject matters of a similar nature, would suggest to me that you are talking pure, unadulterated tripe.

    With respect,obviously.
