Glut of strikers but budget remains intact

1094

We seem to have a lot of forwards.  Stokes, Pukki, Balde, new recruit Fridjonsson, and on-loan, Atajic and Watt, while Georgios may yet stay beyond the summer.  That’s six under contract for the Champions League qualifiers, not counting Sweden’s ‘next Henrik Larsson’, who is likely to move on soon.

Quantity is one thing but cost is just as important, only Samaras and Pukki are likely to be on wages competitive with some of the richer leagues in Europe, so the actual spend on forwards is likely to be considerably less than on defence or midfield.  The manager is likely to be operating within budget for this area of the team.

What we’re missing is an on-form striker who is capable of embarrassing St Johnstone and Inverness’s finest with their goals-to-games ratio, not to mention our own free-wheeling creative-mid.  Gone are the days Celtic strikers stats are dismissed as a mere by-product of the sheer volume of chances they are presented with.  Without a class act up front, the squad is unbalanced.

There was a note of disappointment in Neil Lennon’s voice when he spoke of missing a potential signing last week. I’m almost certain we’ll sign a striker this week but if he’s more of a hunch than a certified target we’re wasting our money.  Hunch signings are fine but you can only give space to so many in any one season.  We’ve made our low-cost gambles up front, and there is never a time for a high-cost uncertified gamble.

Celtic have a bit of money burning a hole in their pocket earning 15% interest from the Co-op Bank at the moment.  The desire to spend it, from chief exec, to manager, to scouts and all other influencers will be practically unstoppable, which is why I’m so sure we’ll sign someone.  Time will tell if we experience buyers regret.

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by 31 January.  Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

    Fair points.

Not all domestic scorers can do likewise in Europe, but some/many do.

I really think goalscorers, er, score.

    Don’t think its unreasonable.

What is more unfathomable is signing non- regular scorers expecting them to, er, score. No offence to Pukki but… Maybe he wasn’t signed for his goals?

I’m less concerned about his ability to score and more about his ability to be a Celt. Derek Riordan was a very talented boy but I always thought him overawed at being at Celtic.

  4. All those disappointed we are not laying out 6 million for a striker tell me who exactly they have in mind at that price.

I personally would much rather have Leigh Griffiths at a fraction of the price. As for Robert Snodgrass at approx 4 mil from the over-inflated Englush market…..no thanks. I dont think he would bring anything to the table that we dont already have. Anyway, I would rather wait to see how Stefan Johanssen does.

  5. Griffiths’ 28 goals for Hibernian last season in the montage below.

    http://youtu.be/mWt1BNHnRc4

All types of goals, free kicks like Naka, tap in’s, inside the box and out, even a goal from a corner in there.

If you think he wouldn’t enhance the Celtic frontline I’m bewildered.

And if the main criteria for following Celtic was exemplary conduct throughout your lifetime, then Paradise would be empty each week.

Let him who is free from sin cast the first stone. I think that rules us all out, Leigh Griffiths if we sign him deserves the support of the Celtic support and every chance to succeed that we would offer any new signing. H.H.

  7. When Neil Lennon uttered those words that we could afford a spend of around £6m if it was justified, I took the opposite reading from that than most posters have done tonight.

I took from it, that it was highly unlikely that we would have a £6m spend but, in the unlikely event that all our forwards were suddenly stricken with long term injuries, we had the funds to buy someone.

“We have the funds to buy” and “We will buy” are two different statements.

But then, I did not want to take the twisted meaning so that I’d have something to beat our manager with at a later date.

  8. Oh and despite not being top of the pops with the Wolves coaches LG remains that clubs top scorer!

Setting free the Bears. I took exactly the same meaning as you did we could afford to sign a six million striker. Not that we would sign a six million pound striker.H.H.

  11. I would take Lee Griffiths no problem, for one reason only HE SCORES GOALS and does so regularly that is what we have been crying out for. His stats show what he can do and i think they will get even better as a player with Celtic

31003 Anelka is not available he has said he will finish his career at West Brom..However,it should be the same for anyone we sign.H.H.

  16. I think the fact that after talking about £6,000,000.00 strikers, (N.Lennon) then bidding £0.3m for a lower division striker is what is pissing most off on here…

  23. smoke and mirrors @ 19.52 hrs,

I too was in the jungle the day bananas was thrown at Mark Walters.

I was also attending games when unacceptable chants such as “I would rather wear a turban than a sash” were sung .

Some much more blatant racist chants ( Unprintable in this day and age ) were also routinely sung.

Times have changed and we are more enlightened. We have moved on and realised that this was frankly unacceptable and downright wrong . Racism is wrong, Full Stop.

    Nevertheless it did occur.

Some sections of our support have had to be re-educated, forgiven and we have moved on.

I have posted that Leigh Griffiths IMO is not my ideal choice for various reasons. But to condemn him forever for a spur of the moment tweet is frankly un-Christian like behaviour. He has apologised and probably wishes there was a ban on the use of twitter.

To berate him for his past racist tweet and not forgive then ignore our past reeks of hypocrisy.

Not comfortable reading for some, but fact nevertheless.

    HH, always in Celtic.

Not shooting you down…..just offering an alternative……he is older…..but for both Europe and domestically, a class above….albeit for 2 years only….

  25. Good Evening CQNers

Interesting reading about why we shouldn’t sign Leigh Griffiths.

    Think about the behaviour of……..

Maurice Johnston, Frank MacAvennie, Charlie Nicholas, Andy Walker to name but a few.

Are these guys ” Celtic men”? Have they been judged only on their ability?

Come on. If Leigh Griffiths signs for Celtic we won’t expect him to celebrate Mass. We want him to score goals. Judge him (and anybody else who wears the hoops) on his ability.
