Glut of strikers but budget remains intact

1094

We seem to have a lot of forwards.  Stokes, Pukki, Balde, new recruit Fridjonsson, and on-loan, Atajic and Watt, while Georgios may yet stay beyond the summer.  That’s six under contract for the Champions League qualifiers, not counting Sweden’s ‘next Henrik Larsson’, who is likely to move on soon.

Quantity is one thing but cost is just as important, only Samaras and Pukki are likely to be on wages competitive with some of the richer leagues in Europe, so the actual spend on forwards is likely to be considerably less than on defence or midfield.  The manager is likely to be operating within budget for this area of the team.

What we’re missing is an on-form striker who is capable of embarrassing St Johnstone and Inverness’s finest with their goals-to-games ratio, not to mention our own free-wheeling creative-mid.  Gone are the days Celtic strikers stats are dismissed as a mere by-product of the sheer volume of chances they are presented with.  Without a class act up front, the squad is unbalanced.

There was a note of disappointment in Neil Lennon’s voice when he spoke of missing a potential signing last week. I’m almost certain we’ll sign a striker this week but if he’s more of a hunch than a certified target we’re wasting our money.  Hunch signings are fine but you can only give space to so many in any one season.  We’ve made our low-cost gambles up front, and there is never a time for a high-cost uncertified gamble.

Celtic have a bit of money burning a hole in their pocket earning 15% interest from the Co-op Bank at the moment.  The desire to spend it, from chief exec, to manager, to scouts and all other influencers will be practically unstoppable, which is why I’m so sure we’ll sign someone.  Time will tell if we experience buyers regret.

Reminder to everyone who booked tickets for the CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner that they have to be paid by 31 January.  Let me know if you can’t find details, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Is that a big hint to progress having been made ?

And something Paul has been alluding too ?

    Hail Hail

  2. Evening all.

The possible signing of Leigh Griffiths answers some questions and

    begs the answer to others.

Not a good omen for the future prospects at Celtic for Atajic or Watt.

The prospect of finding a forward in the £5million bracket to play in

the SPL who fits the “profile” is nil.

Not read back much but has anyone suggested the input of WGS

    in targeting Griffiths ?

WGS has worked closely with him.No way ,would NFL go for

the player without consulting our former boss IMO.

To this observer Leigh Griffiths will help us into the group stages

of the Champions League,I do however doubt an impact beyond

or into third place which for me is where our ambitions are targeted.

If he joins he will get my full support.

As for the character blemishes ,racist or not,he is 23 years old.

I never for a second thought that some posters on here had lived

    life to such impeccable standards.

You are lucky to have no sorrow or regrets over past wrong deeds.

I think the lad will appreciate Celtic.

Judge him as a Celtic player if it happens.HH

  3. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Well I would love to see Griffiths in the hoops I think he would score plenty of goals for us he has pace and he works hard at his game and finds good positions.I want to win the treble each season and im sure he would assist. As far as the CL goes we are never likely to go much further than the last 16 due to the money the top clubs have at this moment in time.So I hope Lennie gets his man.H.H.

  4. When Larsson signed aged 26 he was a long way off the player he ultimately became.

When Scott McDonald (24) signed he wasn’t good enough for Champions League – the goal he scored against Man U was as a good a strike as any from our strikers in the premier competition.

When Harold Brattbakk signed he was our greatest ever signing.

How many strikers at the height of their career have we signed?

    Frank McAvennie (West Ham)

    John Hartson (West Ham)

I can’t think of too many others. Usually they are up and coming like Pierre or proven SPL scorers.

  5. Jeg er Neil Lennon-Greeninbingley on

Griffiths? Aye, he’ll get goals, if we buy him. I hope we don’t, leaving aside the debate as to his moral worth as a man.

But nobody today, or yesterday, or last week as I recall, has mentioned the man we bought from Stromsgodset in Norway.

That lad is our missing link. He has the priceless ability to keep the ball, surge forward, drag players out of position, then see the pass to put someone else in.

Stefan Johansen will be the Big Difference. How long have we been caterwauling about needing a creative midfielder?

    Well, we’ve got one.

  6. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

I’ll certainly give Leigh Griffiths my full support if he becomes a Celtic player but I do hope that it is made abundantly clear to him that he must make sure that these incidents away from the football pitch just don’t happen. The racist remark can’t be repeated but just as worrying is a professional footballer being charged with the theft of a bottle of water from a supermarket.

“Been dipping in and out when I’ve had the chance but missing loads, will be quiet for the next few months but hopefully stirrings closer to home will bring great pleasure to timdom in the near future.”

Can you enlighten us any more ????

  8. Philbhoy- That’s good to hear!

Nothing yet, other than a couple of good discussions but still plugging away, doing some self funded training this week to smarten up the CV.

I lost the car when the job went so decided to buy another one to get me back on the road, only had it 2 days before some b*****d smashed into the side of if and drove off without leaving a note to say “sorry”.

Never rains but it pours. But hey, we won 4-0 yesterday and I was there to see it!

    All the best, my friend.

  9. Cowiebhoy supporting the Celtic to 3 in a row on

    PF Ayr,

No idea, but we cannot continue signing players, without shipping out

We laugh at others with over 50 players.

I am struggling to understand having Lennoxtown and a youth policy when we are constantly signing teenagers and early 20’s players, either we have youth policy or scrub it and save the money, incidentally no idea how good any of the youth are :-)

Ps – I sent you an invite on LinkedIn

I haven’t given up on Rogic, think he is a player. But we have signed a man in Johansen who I think will make us click.

  14. Kevtic………… Scott McDonald was the classic penalty box striker and was a great signing.

Got some great goals in the SPL and in Europe. Lacked a bit of pace but was skilful and razor sharp in the penalty box. He used scare the shit out of Davey Weir and the Rangers defenders. Small and cute.

  15. Turned up at kids’ football training tonight and was promptly awarded with my 1st cap.

  17. Celtic will envoke the year option on Kris Commons’ contract next week, come summer Transfer Window he will have about 6 months left.Leicester City interested if they get promoted and he’s a Midlands bhoy.A few CL games or the EPL,?that could be his dilemma.Get the finger out and get him on a longer deal Peter.Much more urgent to me than Leigh Griffiths.

  18. Does making a racist comment or tweet mean you are a racist?.

Im not to sure. There’s no doubt in a modern tolerant society there is no place for any form of racism. However to condemn a man for life on the back of a comment made in the middle of an argument does seem extreme.

I don’t know Leigh G, he might well be a horrible vile racist but I don’t think one (that I know of) tweet proves this.

He was 21 or 22 at the time, is this an excuse?, of course not but he’s clearly not the brightest.

I have made too many mistakes in my life to condem a man for life on the back of one comment, this is no way meant to condone or excuse what he tweeted.

I really don’t believe my club would sign a racist, do you?.

Right last word on this, I promise :-)

For those making the ‘let he without sin…..’ analogy, I’ve made serious mistakes in my life, I’ve hurt people and I’ve said many things I regret.

However, we’re talking about Celtic, a club founded for refugees, for those who’d come to a new and foreign land, attempting to sign a player who’s used language telling another ‘foreigner’ to go back to his own country.

Disgusted that some would try to excuse this.

    Au revoir.

    —————————————————————-

No-one condoned the comment LG made or tried to excuse it. Everyone condemns it. What I see is people pointing out that it’s wrong but that the guy apologised and should be given another chance to redeem himself – which will be demonstrated by his behaviour in future.

What you are saying is that if someone makes a mistake then that defines them forever and they should be shunned. I find that position unacceptable.

  24. Been dipping into Wolves forums…

In the main they’d rather LG stayed.

A recurring theme that he is their only escape from hoof it and run football which they think is their managers preference. A supporter in Australia who got up at 3am for their last match, Gillingham I think, was furious that they weren’t playing him!

Usual disparaging remarks about Scottish footie tho not as bad as on here lol

This doesn’t prove anything about LG but worth mentioning I hope.
