Gordon positioning, return leg fitness exercise

526

The immediate benefit of last night’s 0-3 win away to Alashkert, is that the manager can use Wednesday’s return game as an opportunity to get squad fitness to the required level, without having to worry about qualification.

We have 180 minutes football to get ready for Rosenborg or Valur.  The former are 16 league games and five months into their season.  And you do not need to be reminded, Rosenborg dusted themselves down after defeat to Celtic last season to end Ajax’ interest in European football before the end of August.

Did you notice Craig Gordon seemed anchored to his six yard box, allowing space between him and the defence for long balls to be pitched into?  Not sure what the plan was here but it didn’t help.  There is a newness about the defensive line-up which would benefit from the keeper taking a more active role.

Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele looked a real handful.  Both held the ball and withstood attention from multiple opponents.  James Forrest got a goal and, technically, two assists, although his contribution to the opener was a shot he will try to forget.  James produced the difference between Celtic and Rosenborg a year ago, his experience at this level will be valuable in two weeks.

There will be tougher tests for Lewis Morgan but his directness impressed.

Look on the bright side Englunders……..it’ll save you a doing from France.

  2. Croatia is a nation of only 4 million people. That’s quite an achievement to reach the World Cup final. Hard luck England, you had a great chance.

  3. Very well done to the worlds ranked 20th team

Who did them that’s coming home actually beat ??

  4. Hope Croatia go on and win it. Modric a delicate looking lad but a brilliant footballer.

a good draw got them to the semis – some things they do well, kane found wanting against quality, midfield absent against sheer quality, couldn’t score form play when needed

Germany Spain Argies Italy will be back next comp – this was their once in a generation chance

Mmmmmm……..as we used to say on CQN – a nation of 4 Million in a World Cup final!

Surely a nation of 5 million could do the same if they weren’t held back in the stone age by bowling club committees and bending over backwards for a corrupt organisation.

    Just saying like.

  7. Well, that’s a big relief.

Maybe the national stations will sober up and start their news bulletins with real news now. It has just got worse and worse over the past week.

Yes. It just goes to show that size of population is less important than the fitness for purpose of the governing bodies running the sport in your country.

  9. As I indicated earlier, I think I understand the reasons for wishing England ill but some of the gloating disappoints.I used to see the anti-English thing in sport as a bit of a laugh. I think it is more sinister now.

Also, if I think of the respective Managers of England and Scotland, I know which one I prefer by a country mile.

The same is true if I compare the Fa in England with the SFA.

    `night all.

  10. Shocked at how bad this ‘world beating’ English were. Not a footballer amongst them, chased in midfield, technically poor and mentally weak. Plenty of long balls, set peices and hit and hope football. Croatia were too good and too street wise.

  11. I commented after watching Mbappe at Celtic Park, he would be the next world superstar

Imagine a front 3 of Moussa, Odsonne and Mbappe – wow ??

    And being supplied by Ntcham

    Anyway I digress

    Mbappe v’s Modric , who’ll win that ?

  12. Ray Winstone's Big Disembodied Heid on

Wins against Tunisia Panama Colombia and defeats to Belgium and Croatia.

That is nowhere near World Cup winning form.

  13. Phew turning over and logging out to watch a movie with the wife

    have a wonderful evening all

    Hail Hail

  14. What is the Stars on

I know Modric tired towards the end but I thought he was excellent until then.so clever and confident in possession

  15. Pretty sure Roy Keane is holding back a titter or two.

There’s been more pain on tv in the last 10 minutes than in a whole season of Casualty.
