Gordon positioning, return leg fitness exercise

526

The immediate benefit of last night’s 0-3 win away to Alashkert, is that the manager can use Wednesday’s return game as an opportunity to get squad fitness to the required level, without having to worry about qualification.

We have 180 minutes football to get ready for Rosenborg or Valur.  The former are 16 league games and five months into their season.  And you do not need to be reminded, Rosenborg dusted themselves down after defeat to Celtic last season to end Ajax’ interest in European football before the end of August.

Did you notice Craig Gordon seemed anchored to his six yard box, allowing space between him and the defence for long balls to be pitched into?  Not sure what the plan was here but it didn’t help.  There is a newness about the defensive line-up which would benefit from the keeper taking a more active role.

Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele looked a real handful.  Both held the ball and withstood attention from multiple opponents.  James Forrest got a goal and, technically, two assists, although his contribution to the opener was a shot he will try to forget.  James produced the difference between Celtic and Rosenborg a year ago, his experience at this level will be valuable in two weeks.

There will be tougher tests for Lewis Morgan but his directness impressed.

I’m sure their particular mix of hoofball and fan dancers without a midfield will take them far…

Maybe even they will muster a shot at goal in the second half or the whole of extra time:))

Hey maybe they’ll even let the referee ref the game in an original outburst of fair play…

And maybe Oddbod won’t throw himself around at every corner looking for a penalty:))

A fine example of what I meant by “delusional”.

Maybe VFR could use that for his “Word of the day.” In the morning.

Ignoring reality I think will feature in the various meanings.

The reality being that the line up of galaxy stars to provide the easiest route to a semi-final ever will not occur again in the next millenium or so.

    Kikithenakas,

I heard that at 18:30 on radio Scotland. A flippant piece at the end of the news…with the newsreader sounding like he was trying to suppress bursring into laughter. “Two Celtic players involved in a car accident in Ayreshire…”

  13. England – Big strong athletic lads playing a structured, disciplined percentage form of football.

Croatia – Eclectic physical mix who rely on tactical nous supplemented by pure footballing talent.

The way England play will be exemplified in the programming of the world’s first android eleven when Google, no doubt, get around to developing them.

The way Croatia play will remain the exclusive and ineffable property of the human spirit, and remain beyond the grasp of pragmatists and analytical tacticians.

Brilliant achievement, and a brilliant result for football.

But another side packed with more guile and flair will call time on the wilting Croats on Sunday.

A step too far – France by 2 or 3.

To be honest I thought both teams were pretty basic, crazy that either of them got to a semi final of a world cup.

France should walk over them, however one off game anything can happen, and France are very defensive despite the attacking quality they have.

  16. What time does the other semi final between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland kick off?

I watched the Russia England game in 2016 with a French colleague.

We were united in our support for Russia.

    I wonder why that is?

Police Scotland is appealing for information following a road traffic collision involving two vehicles in Cumbernauld on Wednesday 11 July 2018.

Around 2.20 pm a blue Range Rover was driving north along Mollins Road when it collided with a silver Volvo at the junction with Orchardton Road, Cumbernauld.

The 54 year-old driver of the Volvo was taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital as a precaution. Nobody else was injured during the incident.

A 22 year-old man will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal for a road traffic offence in connection with the incident.

Police Constable, Stuart Newall, Cumbernauld Police Office, said:

“We are appealing for anyone who in the area who may have dash cam footage that can help us in our enquiries. Did you witness the collision, or were you driving along that road prior to the collision? You may have information that can help us.

“Anyone with information should contact Cumbernauld Police Office via 101, quoting incident number 2022 of Wednesday 11 July 2018.”

  19. A country with a population of 55.3 million and probably the largest domestic football income in the World was beaten tonight by a country with a population of 4.3 million (less than Greater London) and a domestic football income that is negligible.

So it doesn’t matter what the score is in the other semi-final between Scotland and Ireland. BTW it’s not coming home and won’t be for a very long time.

    Nah, Football won.

Croats up against a well-drilled regimented system, reliant on set-pieces.

It took pure natural footballing talent to overcome the stoical English beasts at the back – the clipped pass/cross to the intelligent run of Perisic and the improvised finish with his studs, and Mandzukic’s instinctive optimistic dart into space in anticipation – and achieve their place in the greatest single match of football played on Earth.

And France? France aren’t ‘defensive’. France control the game. France dictate the game. When France need to attack – e.g Argentina – they do, and are devastating at it. When they need to control – Belgium – they show incredible positional sense and timing.

They work the throttle as they please, happy to turn up the heat on you if they need to, happy to go toe-to-toe and keep you out if they need to. They always look as if there’s more in the tank/arsenal.

They’re an underrated complete footballing machine, determined to make up for blowing the Euro final on home soil in 2016.

I think they’ll dominate the international game for the next decade.

I suspect on Sunday they will run riot unless every Croatian plays the game of his life.

Part of me almost – ALMOST – wanted the English in against them with all the hyperbole and hubris, just to see a historic savaging, humiliation on the biggest stage.

However, I hope the Croats put up a good show; tho with what they’re up against, both physically and ability-wise, can’t see it.

Will be a joy of a game to watch, with added schadenfreude as the commentators rack up the ‘what if’?’ count. ;))

I just sent this to the SNP. I urge others to do likewise if ye can, info@snp.org

Hi, I would like to know what the SNP intend to do about these hate fest marches. As a citizen of Scotland in 2018 I am ashamed and embarrassed by these thuggish marches. I don’t want to hear about tradition, in parts of Africa FGM is traditional. (thanks for that Phil) Tradition linked to abuse of specific ethnic groups is not tradition it is criminal. These groups are pro British and acting against them will not lose votes for the SNP. If what occurred in Glasgow was directed against a Synagogue or Mosque I believe there would an International outcry. But we are only Scabby Scottish/Scots Irish Catholics so we can be abused at will. We are the most abused group in the UK and as far as I am aware no one from the Scottish government has made a statement about this disgraceful state of affairs. Why will no one speak out about this? Again if the victims had been Jewish or Muslims I believe everyone in the Scottish Goverment would have been keen to make statements saying how terrible it is. I am not prepared to be a victim anymore. I have always voted SNP however if these marches are allowed to continue by the SNP Goverment I will withhold my vote in future until the SNP take action.

The bit in brackets was added later and not sent to SNP,
