Green/Whyte enablers, racism and Ibrox security

1089

Have you ever seen a ‘Rangers’ director pushed by a journalist on a question he dodged before yesterday?  It’s never happened.  STV’s Peter Smith did something no journalist in the history of Scottish football has done before, pressed a question when the man in charge at Ibrox dodged the initial inquiry.  Smith dismissed the deserved praise that came his way last night by suggesting it’s what a journalist does.  True, but refreshing nonetheless.

I was reminded last night that Green’s examination by the old media has come earlier in his journey to the bottom that Craig Whyte’s did last season.  Whyte was being backed by some, let’s call them enablers, right up until the week before Rangers went into administration.  Unfortunately for Green some in the media, and perhaps a few in the support, were embarrassed by their backing of Whyte last year and will not repeat the mistake.

Apart from the aforementioned Green, I have only ever known one person to use the word “darkie” (I missed 1970s ‘comedians’).  He was born in the first years of the 20th century, too young for the first war and too old to be conscripted for the second.  Well into his 90s, I heard him say “there are a lot of darkies on TV these days”.  He was reprimanded and immediately realised what he had done.  An apology and a period of over-compensation followed.

It falls to SFA president Campbell Ogilvie to ensure that such language has no place in Scottish football.  Disciplinary proceedings should be issued, unless, of course, the SFA view the matter in a different light.  Any future appearance of a Charles Green image on a banner or effigy at Celtic Park, or use of the words ‘Our New Hero’ to describe him, should not be regarded as an endorsement of his views, only his work in football.

Celtic minstrels will write songs about him, I have heard the words “man-love” being used this week.

Will Newco stay active long enough for Craig Whyte’s security over Ibrox, crystallised by yesterday’s ruling that he owes Ticketus circa £17m and therefore had a piece of the action at Rangers after all, to have an effect?  There are so many icebergs around Newco probably not.

It was interesting to hear Manchester United’s endorsement of Newco as a potential English Premier League club being debated on STV.  Now out of Europe, Manchester United were asked if they would play a fundraiser at Ibrox later this month.  I hope Green’s comments on the interview don’t spoil relations.

I was pleased to hear we were drawn at home for the next game but for pity’s sake, sending Motherwell to Tannadice the day before defeats the point. This is a complete failure.

Add this to the fact that Fraser Forster’s biggest fan is making his First Holy Communion when we are at home to St Johnstone on 11 May and you get a taste of the frustration in our house last night.

He realises the importance of his First Communion but thought we could cancel the party afterwards and have an alternative celebration at Celtic Park. We’ll distract him on the day…..

As many of you are already aware, the Celtic Trust have arranged a process whereby, if you live in Scotland, you can easily contact your MSP to back the FAC call for an inquiry into policing at the Gallowgate last month.  You can find the information and template here, go do it.

No wonder the Celtic Board maintained a dignified / strategic silence …… As we all knew, there was, and is, a lot to come out on this ‘mess’, which will bury them once and for all …. I would suggest that our Board knew more than some of us, in particular what is to come…..

On another subject, we MUST bhoycott St Mirren from now on, not because they are voting against restructuring, but because of their REAL reason for doing so……. Utterly contemptable …….!!!!!!!!

Well as I have said before all this high finance at Ibrokes is well above my limited understanding.I am surprised though on tonights reporting Scotland that todays judgement favouring ticketus over Whyte to the tune of 17 million pounds will have no effect on the current situation at Ibrokes it seems quite unreal do this mob have to answer to anyone or do they get allowed to do just what they want ? H.H.

  13. Rangers Chief Executive Charles Green tonight released the following statement:

He commented: “I apologise unreservedly if any offence has been taken by my remark. I was actually trying to make the point, albeit clumsily, that I am not a racist.

  15. Just watching how the news spin this latest chapter.

Seems to me the whole labyrinthine saga is finally assuming an easily negotiable pattern with a final outcome within view : the realistic reconstruction of the governing bodies of Scottish Football and the obliteration of Klan F.C.

Again, I know this is a Celtic blog, but the obsession with that lot will eventually lead to equilibrium restored and once again we will only have our own fortunes to be obsessed by and the ups and downs of the game we all love and our part in it.

The end of t’rankers saga will be a cause for celebration.

Meanwhile we have to contend with watching it like an explosion in slow motion.

roy croppie. We know there has been tax evasion to the tune of millions and it appears they have walked away from that. There was the dual contract situation they appear to have walked away from that. There was the ticketus situation and the who owns Ibrox and who owns Murray park ? and after all this Sir David Murray appears to be untouchable and the huns are patting each other on the back after winning the third division. If somone wrote a fiction book about all the goings on you would say it was to far fetched to bother reading.Only in our bigoted little country could this happen.H.H.

  22. Just catching up, Sevco in more trouble, shame, on them of course, not for.

I just saw the post split fixtures, do they really think that is for the good of the game? Or think it will lesson the impact of the Title party? Ah well, we’ll just have to show them it wont. Going for a curry in Elgin.

  26. Received yesterday morn……

    Dear Mr x

Thank you for your message and for voicing your concern regarding the policing of football under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications (Scotland) Act 2012, and in particular the incident between the police and Celtic fans on 16 March 2013.

When the new Act was proposed by the SNP Government I and my Scottish Labour Party colleagues opposed it vigorously. We warned that it risked damaging the relationships with fans that the police need if they are to deal with any problems associated with football while keeping responsible supporters onside. These concerns were not of course confined to Labour MSPs: football fans, religious organisations, anti-sectarianism charities, children’s charities, the Law Society and the Human Rights Commission all highlighted problems with the SNP’s proposals.

I have been concerned for some time now that the implementation and policing of the law has not only created confusion but entirely the wrong atmosphere in relation to tackling sectarianism and hatred in Scotland. What is actually needed on this issue is clarity about what constitutes an offence, and what enforcement measures are necessary and appropriate.

I have attached two questions which I raised on this subject recently in the Scottish Parliament which highlights clearly my concerns on this matter and exposes the disappointing response I elicited from the SNP Government and its backbench MSPs.

The incident in the Gallowgate on March 16 merely confirmed my fears that the law as it now stands hinders rather than helps the policing of football fans. That is why I and my Scottish Labour colleagues will renew our calls that the Act should be subject to review under the procedures for post-legislative scrutiny at Holyrood.

I had the privilege of addressing the Fans Against Criminalisation rally in George Square, Glasgow on Saturday 6 April and pledged my support to the campaign against the Offensive Behaviour Act. I hope that, ultimately, this dreadful piece of legislation will be repealed.

Scottish Labour supports efforts to tackle sectarianism wherever it exists in our communities. That means focusing on education and young people, working with churches, football authorities and fans on positive practical measures that are based on evidence, and looking for ways to reduce rather than increase tensions around football and in other aspects of life where a sectarian element can be found.

I am grateful to you for contacting me on this issue, and I will seek to keep you informed of future developments.

    Kind Regards

    Michael McMahon MSP
