Hampden hangover

322

Let’s be clear: Dundee are in their best form in years and are more than capable of taking something from Celtic tonight.  They also have the incentive of catching Dundee United, who have collapsed since Celtic dismantled them recently.  If there is any sort of Hampden hangover, we’ll not win the game.

What I expect is the cup-tied pair of Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong to return to the side and give fresh impetus.  I also expect Dundee to suffer the most outrageously unfair refereeing decision seen outside of Hampden in years; proof (cough), if it was needed, that referees don’t only make mistakes against Celtic.

If Leigh Griffiths collides with Scott Brown inside the Dundee box, Celtic will be awarded a penalty.  These are our expectations of the Scottish game.

I bear no ill-feeling towards Josh Meekings. He stuck his hand up to stop a ball instinctively. I’ve done the same, a moment later you’re looking at your hand wondering, ‘Why did I do that?’ So I felt the player being suspended was a bit harsh. Then I saw him posing with his ‘trophy’ hand. Stuff him.

My only dispute with the SFA is that their rules allow retrospective action when a referee has not seen an incident. Mr McLean saw everything, but was persuaded not to act.

Have you climbed Ben Nevis?  It’s a fantastic experience.  The Foundation are taking a group there in June, and anything the Foundation do is a fantastic experience.  I know several people who have told me they’re doing this but who have not registered yet.  Your place needs to be booked with the mountain authorities well in advance.  Register here NOW!

  1. I have no problem with Meekings’s retro ban.

Fat cat Boyce from FIFA can opine all day. His organization are allegedly non-profit but happily forced Brazilian Football authorities to reluctantly host a World Cup with an American beer maker as sponsors. FIFA is an acronym for something else together :o)

Meekings reaction was instinctive and there is no real distinction in the rules of the game between instinctive and deliberate. In this context, he raised his arm/hand to obstruct the path of the ball. He put his head in the general direction of what he assumed might be the path of the ball, but for good measure intentionally/instinctively brought his hand up to also block that projected path. It was hand ball and it was intentional.

Steven McLean’s video master class on what amounts to handball wanohwan made the case well enough. Just a shame that he only talks a good game.

As to the SFA’s retro ban over such an incident, well we are back to the SFA more or less making things up as they go along. The new 2011 discipline procedures were designed to modernize the creaky old system, but the reality is that it was also poorly thought through and leaves the SFA with all the wiggle room they want, when they need it. The SFA under-reacted initially after the game – and then over-reacted when they realized how much they had screwed up in Round One.

Anyone else remember the Northern Ireland referee (Alan Snoddy ) who, during the 86 World Cup had the temerity to book a South American player for simulation – before simulation became such a growth industry. Snoddy was disowned by FIFA and never used again in the tournament.

I believe that the exact opposite will happen this evening and that Celtic will be punished again by the officials for the Inverness defender’s behaviour, remember Aiden at Easter Road:

“Celtic lurched from one diving storm to another last night after winger Aiden McGeady was sent off for simulation at Easter Road.

A battling 1-0 win over Hibernian saw the Parkhead side play the final half-hour with 10 men following the Republic of Ireland international’s controversial dismissal by referee Dougie McDonald.

In an incredible follow-up to Eduardo’s theatrics against Celtic in the Champions League, it’s now a Parkhead star who stands in the dock”

As well as the gross incompetence and / or downright cheating by the Scottish officials , their biggest crime is that they allow a form of football to be played in the top league, which permits constant hacking down from the back ….. Hopefully we can put Sunday behind us and get over the line in the league ….. we need to carry a bigger physical threat next season which make teams think twice about sticking the boot in ……

  4. EKBhoy,

It’s not really the size of our players that is the problem; it’s that opposition know they can kick and shove them with impunity, as happened against ICT in our last 2 games. We are being cheated. There is no point in saying anything else. The time has past, imo, when we can make any excuses for our being treated differently to everyone else.

We will have no “favours” until we cross the winning line in the league. Then, we might in order to “even things up”.

Interesting that UEFA officer makes an intervention about the player. Hasn’t he anything to say about the other player who cheated or the performance of the officials?

Colombia v Germany ..Carlos Valderrama ( wonderful player ) went down like he had been hit by a sniper and then spent minutes rolling about in pretend agony . Alan Snoddy ignored him and allowed the game to continue.I don’t know if he booked Valderrama or not

  6. Hebcelt – simple solution to the soft penalty award is to take it but roll it gently to their keeper or boot it out for a throw in. Similarly any dubious sending off should meet with protest from celtic players in the first instance and choosing to remove a player from the park in the second. Decency, honour and genuine dignity (not the type that thinks dressing in a suit and doffing your cap to the man above you in the social rankings is dignity)

    honest question.

any bhoys know of catholics who are in the masons.?

    *as I said yesterday

The Church has imposed the penalty of excommunication on Catholics who become Freemasons. The penalty of excommunication for joining the Masonic Lodge was explicit in the 1917 code of canon law (canon 2335), and it is implicit in the 1983 code (canon 1374).

in saying that I was helping out at the Good Friday service and at the Veneration of the Cross a young lad came out of the pew wearing the black mass ring. I was half expecting the cross to topple over.

Furthermore I was hame a few years back, 2000, and we were due playing them at the midden, I was talking to the local grand bassa who I knew growing up and when he mentioned watching the game in a local pub I asked what was wrong with the “big hoose” as they call it. He told me that the Tims in the ludge vetoed that.

    Its simply not true.

We’ve had a good few penalties given at tight score lines and at least a couple of dubious penalties awarded at 1-0.

We are too lightweight hence we get booted; the refs are allowing smaller teams freedom to repeat fouling, still at least this year we have retaliated with a series of niggling fouls to stop teams hitting us on the break.

  12. There is a lot of nonsense going on here about rolling penaltys up to keeper, protesting if they get a guy sent off etc, FFS Get real, we are playing badly for last 5 games and have a vital away game tonight. If we lose which is possible we bring a 5 point lead into break with an away game coming up against our nearer challengers.

No team or Ref will do us a favour, this league is not won yet, our total concentration should be on 3 points tonight and stuff all the other nonsense.

Sorry, I don’t buy the Celtic soft penalty idea either, the SFA show signs of shambolics but won’t soften because of Sunday, or for any other reason. Calum Murray is a senior SFA figure, and like most Scottish referees has a sequence of mibbery.

In his last Celtic game he blatantly allowed St Johnstone’s time wasting acknowledging it by looking at his watch, and finger wagging.

Then didn’t add it on at the end, maybe he just forgot.

  15. It seems to be a peculiarity of Scottish masonry thathe it has attached itself to a football club and a particular brand of protestantism. From my limited knowledge it seems to be mostly about scratching backs, looking after business and career interests and generally filling bank accounts. I reckon it’s mostly that too in Scotland but with the addition of keeping timmy in.his place.

You don’t hear much about them here in the north. There are certainly lodges about the place but I suspect the primacy of the OO and ABofD as well as an aversion to the masons from some brands of protestant churches has limited them here. I’m not sure.

I don’t buy the soft penalty idea either.

I do buy the idea of hysterics on here claiming it was a soft penalty should we be awarded one.

  17. Cork – nonsense to you maybe but I genuinely will not cheer a goal scored unfairly. It doesn’t happen too often but it annoys me. I’m not a win at all costs guy. I’m a win the Celtic Way guy – do it fairly, do it right or don’t do it.

  18. Stairheedrammy on

There is no chance of us getting a soft decision from the MIb tonight, him and McLean have been hand picked for these games on their ability to stifle our playing style and to ignore our opponents enthusiastic fouling. We will again be playing against 12-14 men tonight. FTSFA.

Take issue in some way with your thought we will get an unjustified penalty tonight.

I am certain that if its tight in any way there will be every opportunity given for Aberdeen to get a sniff at our title.
