Hartson late mea cupla

827

I’m sure Ronny Deila is delighted to have the backing of John Harton, now he doesn’t need it.  John’s attachment to the club is not in doubt, nor should a new manager want unquestioning support from anyone, but some clubs reach a point when they become unmanageable.  Influential voices collaborate with perma-upset media and fans to expose shoots of recovery to a winter frost.

The mea culpa, when it arrives, is often too late.

Save us from the click bait that is suggesting Craig Gordon is a ‘target’ for some or other English club.  Derk Boerrigter is interesting Real Madrid, honest, they’ve been watching him with the Development Squad.

I’ve been waiting for weeks on someone to ask the question: if a club accepts money on the condition that the lender has the right to appoint two directors, in the event the club removes those directors, do you reckon that would be a breach of the terms of the loan?

I’d be extremely worried if a well-intentioned, but nonetheless, baying mob chased away the last independent director of my club.  Many Germans celebrated the Armistice, thinking a conclusion to hostilities had been agreed.  Months later they learned the terms left them bereft of land, defensive capabilities, capital equipment, authority and self-respect.  What seemed like an end to the trauma only set in motion far greater horrors.

Our good friends at Magners have offered two premium seat tickets for tomorrow’s game at Celtic Park.  To win, email me the name of the team we’re playing at celticquicknews@gmail.com

Competition closes at 5pm tonight.  If you would like to help build a school kitchen for 909 hungry kids for Mary’s Meals in Malawi while entering the competition, you can donate £1 here.  Thank you.

    Matthews Denayer van Djik Wakaso

    Forrest Brown Bitton Henderson Stokes

    Scepovic.

Not a great side, I accept but , if we don`t suffer the kind of performance which often follows a good victory, the above should be sufficient to beat the rather rugged St Johnstone.I think Joe Hanson deserves a wee rest.

All in the first 45 minutes too.

A veritable glut for their supporters so far tonight.

    Repost from this morning:

Anyone with an interest into collusion by the state with loyalist murder gangs should find tonight’s Spotlight programme interesting.

The programme starts at 22.45 on BBC NI One.

I noticed that the Belfast Tele (which I never buy) had four pages on how the poor wee Loyalist murder gangs are being picked on – stomach churning stuff!

  9. For BT,

    Tuesday 3rd

I’m feeling exceptionally well today. (It’s only the third day, I know, but all the same I’m feeling great.) I had a visit this morning with two reporters, David Beresford of The Guardian and Brendan O Cathaoir of The Irish Times. Couldn’t quite get my flow of thoughts together. I could have said more in a better fashion.

    63 kgs today, so what?

A priest was in. Feel he’s weighing me up psychologically for a later date. If I’m wrong I’m sorry — but I think he is. So I tried to defuse any notion of that tonight. I think he may have taken the point. But whether he accepts it, will be seen. He could not defend my onslaught on Bishop Daly — or at least he did not try.

I wrote some notes to my mother and to Mary Doyle in Armagh; and will write more tomorrow. The boys are now all washed. But I didn’t get washed today. They were still trying to get men their first wash.

I smoked some ‘bog-rolled blows’ today, the luxury of the Block!

They put a table in my cell and are now placing my food on it in front of my eyes. I honestly couldn’t give a damn if they placed it on my knee. They still keep asking me silly questions like, ‘Are you still not eating?’

I never got started on my poem today, but I’ll maybe do it tomorrow. The trouble is I now have more ideas.

Got papers and a book today. The book was Kipling’s Short Stories with an introduction of some length by W. Somerset Maugham. I took an instant dislike to the latter on reading his comment on the Irish people during Kipling’s prime as a writer: ‘It is true that the Irish were making a nuisance of themselves.’ Damned too bad, I thought, and bigger the pity it wasn’t a bigger nuisance! Kipling I know of, and his Ulster connection. I’ll read his stories tomorrow.

Ag rá an phaidrín faoi dhó achan lá atá na buachaillí anois. Níl aon rud eile agam anocht. Sin sin. (Translated this reads as follows: The boys are now saying the rosary twice every day. I have nothing else tonight. That’s all.)

  10. scullybhoy,

    Didn’t read it. Thank God.

    God love their wee souls.

Looking forward to the programme tonight though.

I notice both Fisher and McGregor got hooked at HT for the development squad game on Monday.

I suspect both will feature tomorrow, although not in starting 11

    Wakaso at left back ?

I don’t see that happening, although the fact that he has had a place on the bench in last 3/4 games before McGregor, Scepovic, Tonev etc suggests manager sees something

  13. Geordie Munro the minister in charge openly admitted in in the Scottish Parliament. Simple.

  14. BGX the no voting part is pretty pathetic. I could add yes voting onto many insults. That you do says that you believe how you voted in the referendum defines you. Do you really want o stand by that?

  15. Bt,

    No bother.

The journalist Bobby mentioned in today’s diary David Beresford wrote the best book of the hunger strikers bar none in my opinion. Ten Men Fead.

I’ll look out for the one you recommended

  21. WITS,

No, but I read the fairly robust correspondence from O’Rawe and Bik and Danny Morrison. I have great time for the latter two men, and I thought they successfully debunked his claims.

I suppose I should be more open minded but the struggle has produced some really acrimonious debate between ex comrades which was maybe not unexpected. However, it’s usually a case of believing one side or the other.

If so it’s not as conclusive as you’d like to make out.

  25. Captain Beefheart on

Very good book if I remember correctly. A Guardian journalist?

Recently watched a programme called Nazi Collaborators. The IRA’s collaboration was unintentionally hilarious at times. Nutjobs. I recommend the series. The IRA episode was on last week.

  28. About six months ago I decided to stop contributing to CQN. However I cannot simply stand by and have people like Alfie Noakes peddle the old Labour lie that the SNP by voting against Callaghan in a vote of confidence was responsible for bringing in Thatcher.

Like many things in life it was not all that simple. Never having won an election, Callaghan became Prime Minister by default when Harold Wilson stepped down for health reasons.

The supra, if somewhat feckless Unionist Callaghan had managed to offend more than one set of Nationalists on whose support he depended on and generally could have relied on.

Having alienated the SNP by rigging the Devolution Referendum result, and by proposing to increase the number of Ulster Unionist MPs he played Republican Labour, Gerry, later Lord Fitt and Independent Frank McGuire off side.

Bafflingly, Fitt declared that although he would not support Callaghan in the vote of confidence, he would campaign for Labour in any ensuing election should Callaghan lose the vote.

McGuire in attendance at Westminster when the vote was taken, declare himself to be abstaining in person.

A couple of years later McGuire’s death led to something of a footnote in the history of Anglo-Irish relations. His vacant seat was won from a prison cell by the dying hunger striker Bobby Sands. On his death, the seat was one by his agent Owen Carron.

The truth is that Callaghan, by forgetting who his friends might have been, brought about his own downfall.
