Hide your scarf, your ref for the League Cup semi

898

Q. So you were a Rangers season ticket holder, when did you stop?
A. A few years ago.  I work weekends and was seldom getting to games.

Q. How do you feel about how Rangers were treated in 2012?
A. How do any of us feel?  It wasn’t our fault, one guy came in and did all the damage, then sinister forces took advantage.  Every last one of us feel the same way.

Q. How do you feel about the League Cup semi-final, are you looking forward to it?
A. Not really, but we need to do whatever it takes to make sure we don’t get embarrassed.  Years of being subjected to the effects of what Charles Green called “bigotry” means we need to fight with everything we’ve got.  We can’t let Celtic embarrass us, need to stand up to them.

Q.  Thanks, Robert.  One more question, are you available to referee that game?
A.  You know me, aye ready!

The forthcoming League Cup semi-final will be one of the most difficult games to referee and police in the history of Scottish football.  The police will have their most experience Match Commander on duty.  The SFA will not have their most experienced referee on duty, instead they have given the game to former Rangers season ticket holder, Bobby Madden.

The authorities must be independent and be seen to be independent.  Former season ticket holders are acceptable and welcome as referees, but when you face extraordinary circumstances, take extraordinary care in selecting your referee.  I don’t know a single ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t have animated views on what happened in recent years.  They want to beat us next month more than at any time in original-Rangers 140-year history.  Why is one of them the referee?

Craig Thomson is widely regarded as unaligned and Scotland’s top official.  There must be a story explaining why he wasn’t given the game.

Our team selection for the League Cup semi-final doesn’t bother me.  We can have Scepovic, Guidetti, Stokes or Griffiths up front, Efe and Charlie at the back, I’d still back us to win.  Can’t say I’m too worried about the other lot either, even if they manage to hold onto all their, ‘stars’.

What does concern me is how the game is refereed.  Before it, CQN will write about how important it will be to keep 11 men on the field, not to dive into tackles inside our penalty area, and not to get drawn into a levelling battle.

You can write the script about how this one is going to play out, we’ll be kicked, elbowed and incited, with liberal dramatic tumbles taken in and around our box.  In a decade writing CQN I’ve only discussed referees around a dozen times but the selection for this one is alarming. Mr Madden will be scrutinised more than at any time in his professional life.  He has an enormous challenge ahead.

  1. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Blantyre, very true about not getting jobs or apprenticships in private companies even up to the late eighties.

In my previous office a lot of skelf ridden guys came out the woodwork when Souness appeared. They didn’t like me reminding them that the only time they mentioned football previously was when we lost or the defunct club beat us.

  2. Ever since my 1st Celtic game in the mid 60s, we have had to endure biased referees. My dad told me it was ever thus. What really grates though is that even with slow mo replays from 20 different angles, the MIBs still get away with it.

I’ve also seen us benefitting from SOME bad decisions, mainly in Europe.

It goes with the territory, playing 12 men. We are Celtic.

  3. DD,

    Well done to your bhoy.

I’ve posted in the past about the bigotry myself and the few fellow tims had to put up with in Barr&Strouds.

It’s now moved on and changed its name to Thales, a poster came on and put me right on this and since then I met an old tim mate that verified it.

I can’t remember the posters monicker, but well done beating the beasts and all are now playing on an even field of play, no matter colour or creed.

Tomthetimthe fans did speak and changed already made decisions unfortunately we were stupid in thinking

    Edit…

They did, indeed. They probably will have to “speak” again and I hope our voice is amongst them.

Too many are waiting for the club to speak. They only have one voice.

It is the voice of the combined Scottish football supporters who have the loudest voice.

Supporters alliances should have been formed over the past three years. Instead, there appears to be wide divisions between the Celtic support and those of other clubs.

    A pity, an opportunity lost.

  9. My youngest son is doing a full time coaching course at Cumbernauld college .

They spend a lot of time on the astrograss at Broadwood and quite often participate in sessions organised for pros who are taking their SFA coaching badges .

My son told me that Costinho ( ex Porto ) was at Broadwood today with an SFA party .

My son asked him about the UEFA cup final .

Costinho told him that Mourinho asked him to Larsson at corners .

    Estorilbhoy,

Shaun Maloney? Do you think there’s maybe truth in it, based on the source?

Always liked Maloney. Shame he was too fragile when at Celtic. I’ve heard he’s less prone to injury since leaving scottish football… anyone know if his injuries were due to the ‘physical nature’ of scottish football, or if he’s now simply made of tougher stuff…. perhaps due to different (even better) training and fitness methods?

  12. Quick spanish resume:

    – A. Madrid beat Real 2-0 in cup.

    – Norwegian outlet VG.no claims Odegaard, 16, has boarded a private jet to Madrid to sign with UEFA Champions League title holders Real Madrid. So looks like we lost out on that one despite RD knowing the family.

    – Messi embroiled in all sorts of problems at Barca with bust ups with Luis Enrique at training. Once again Chelsea being mentioned as waiting in the wings.

  13. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

    Big cup winners at 21.26.

The legned’s behaviour at times was appalling, when he was sent off at Rugby Park after Mendes got a second yellow, the time he had a go at Mixu Patalaenen when Novo was sent off and worse of all the interview in the tunnel at Ibrox with Chic Young.

When I think of the grief Neil got for so little, no wonder we are paranoid.

Steve Conroy was the ref who sent Mendes off and was slaughtered by the Legned’s media chums to distract from how shocking Smith’s behaviour was.

As a result of the crap Conroy got, it was no wonder he let Lafferty away with the assault on Andreas Hinkel and disallowing Fortune’s goal that day.

Would be entering my 37th year in the Civil Service but walked the Plank in 2001 having served 22 years of my life sentence. Overall my experience was it was mostly Tims but then that might have been because my most of my time was served in ML5 and East End, handy for Paradise.

Then did 5 years with Strathclyde’s finest. Pleasantly surprised by the number of Tims, especially in higher positions. But when you came across a knuckle dragged, your knuckle got the you know what.

I am now on the final straight with a LA, pretty mixed but current Team Bhoys out weigh orcs.

Tooled up…to be honest, I typed the same and thought it a bit heavy for on here and changed it to be a bit more liberal, but your right, sadly.

Just think back to the youth game at firhill and their casuals all hooded up and marauding before and after the game.

The thing is, I took my kids to earlier youth finals games at Hampden prior to thems dying and the supporters mixed going in and out, no problems and none expected.

Just to rub salt in the wound, I had to attend a course being held in the Davie Cooper suite the Wednesday after the game.

I arrived late, just as the meeting was starting with introductions.

When they came to me, I introduced myself, and said I had actually arrived early, but, being a Celtic supporter who had been at the match 72 hours earlier, my counsellor had struggled to talk me through coming back in!

My idea is posted on first page of yesterdays thread and would have hopefully involved all fans which could lead to alliances with other clubs if it worked.

Thanks v much for your reply

The guidance and direction in our game must come from our clubs boards.

i would suggest Celtic reacted to supporter opinion, like the other clubs, aberdeen, D.utd etc and voted accordingly.maybe not as vocally as the provincial clubs.

You are correct *the Game is the institution that is being undwrmined*,, the latest e.g being *donks* same club nonsense and the lack of FFP laws being implemented which means the same thing could, possibly, happen again. The fact the game the sfa govern is outwith company law as well as uefa ffp appears to matter not a jot

Its a weird one when going to see Celtic gives ‘credibility to the betrayal of the game’ but that is where direction and guidance for fans must come from our heirarchy

.i bring up 94 again.Similar only in that the choice to go follow Celtic was left, like today, with the humble fan.

A board statement then(2012) ,just like Walters wishing the noo klub well would have sufficed.Alas it did not happen and we now stand alone. (A policy I actually agree with in todays corporate culture.)

Life is full of conprimises TtT,I have massive issues with Murray cheating since 1988,his era is toxic and questionable and will remain so eternally,.titles trophies etc before going onto monetary loss.but not a bit of their outrage impinges on my decision makin bout goin to see Celtic

PF Ayr, he shouldn’t have reffed our game v them in December 2009 but he probably saw it as a chance to get back in the good books with Dallas and get the media off his back.

He has chucked it now as he never got back in the good books and was messed about doing league 1 & 2 games for a few monthswithout being told why.
