Hide your scarf, your ref for the League Cup semi

898

Q. So you were a Rangers season ticket holder, when did you stop?
A. A few years ago.  I work weekends and was seldom getting to games.

Q. How do you feel about how Rangers were treated in 2012?
A. How do any of us feel?  It wasn’t our fault, one guy came in and did all the damage, then sinister forces took advantage.  Every last one of us feel the same way.

Q. How do you feel about the League Cup semi-final, are you looking forward to it?
A. Not really, but we need to do whatever it takes to make sure we don’t get embarrassed.  Years of being subjected to the effects of what Charles Green called “bigotry” means we need to fight with everything we’ve got.  We can’t let Celtic embarrass us, need to stand up to them.

Q.  Thanks, Robert.  One more question, are you available to referee that game?
A.  You know me, aye ready!

The forthcoming League Cup semi-final will be one of the most difficult games to referee and police in the history of Scottish football.  The police will have their most experience Match Commander on duty.  The SFA will not have their most experienced referee on duty, instead they have given the game to former Rangers season ticket holder, Bobby Madden.

The authorities must be independent and be seen to be independent.  Former season ticket holders are acceptable and welcome as referees, but when you face extraordinary circumstances, take extraordinary care in selecting your referee.  I don’t know a single ‘Rangers’ fan who doesn’t have animated views on what happened in recent years.  They want to beat us next month more than at any time in original-Rangers 140-year history.  Why is one of them the referee?

Craig Thomson is widely regarded as unaligned and Scotland’s top official.  There must be a story explaining why he wasn’t given the game.

Our team selection for the League Cup semi-final doesn’t bother me.  We can have Scepovic, Guidetti, Stokes or Griffiths up front, Efe and Charlie at the back, I’d still back us to win.  Can’t say I’m too worried about the other lot either, even if they manage to hold onto all their, ‘stars’.

What does concern me is how the game is refereed.  Before it, CQN will write about how important it will be to keep 11 men on the field, not to dive into tackles inside our penalty area, and not to get drawn into a levelling battle.

You can write the script about how this one is going to play out, we’ll be kicked, elbowed and incited, with liberal dramatic tumbles taken in and around our box.  In a decade writing CQN I’ve only discussed referees around a dozen times but the selection for this one is alarming. Mr Madden will be scrutinised more than at any time in his professional life.  He has an enormous challenge ahead.

Eventually got our tickets today, I had asked the youngest daughter to do it as she works in Oatlands. Thought it would be just a matter of popping over during her lunch hour. Anyway phoned her last night to ask if she needed me to transfer the money into her account, as you’ve probably now guessed she had forgot to do it.

Anyway after checking club website all was OK as they extended the deadline for season ticket holders by 1 day, so she could get them today at discounted rate. Instead of going over she just phoned and was told deal had ended yesterday and my seat was gone. As said earlier she did get tickets but was made to pay non discounted rate as they said deal had expired.

I sent off an email tonight to the ticket office asking them to remedy this as the clubs site still confirms today was last day and general sale doesn’t start till tomorrow so cost should have been £28 and not £35 as billed.

Will let you know what their reply is mate.

I don’t really know and you don’t know either . However I did speak to one Celtic supporting janny that refereed an old firm final and from legal colleagues of Kenny Clark I was assured that he had a preference for us over them

    Stephen King type genre there.

We used to stop the buses for a pee stop in Maybole on the way up to the games. Some of the sights we witnessed there traumatised us so much we just wore pampers.

Seriously on way back also stopped at wee cafe but don’t have time now on the one day trips thank god.

Dripping with ill will. For those good tims from Maybole I apologise (and sympathise)

Maloney willingly left us at end of contract and we did not receive a penny for him…….we made him a player. Stan Petrov, at the same time, signed a new contract so our club could receive a transfer fee.

IMO…..piss on Maloney…..no love or loyalty with that guy.

    Best regards

Your point about the West earlier today was crass and inaccurate. Islamic primitives are killing more of their own. Quite why some make excuses for these primitives is beyond me.

Dallas actually chopped off a goal for the huns v Celtic at Ibrox in 1995, it was the 3-3 game live on STV and it took Gerry McNee about 25 minutes to realise the goal had been chopped off.

I always thought that Dallas enjoyed being controversial in these games and giving the benefit of the doubt to the away team to prove what a strong referee he was. He liked to make himself the focal point of the game.

On the day of the 1999 league decider there is no doubt that he was both incompetent and vindictive. Mahe`s red card, and his failure to book McCann was a joke. Immediately after he got hit with the coin he gave the huns a free kick and you could see that he was palpably itching to give them a penalty as the ball came into the box. He called a non-existent foul on Vidmar that even he wasn`t claiming for.

By that point Dallas was far gone with his desire to show what a strong man he was by carrying on with the game, but determined also to get his own back on us.

I think that throughout his career Dallas was a supremely arrogant referee who wrongly believed the fans paid their money to come and see him rather than the 22 players who were playing the game.

  14. Re the Madden appointment, don’t the Police have a responsibility to…oh yeah, I forgot.

On a bigger story, French police and paramilitary operation underway in Reims right now

  15. kdc

They could fast track Andy Goram through a course and have him referee the semi final and we would still win it

The only fear I will have on the day is that they will have a group of players who will be more pumped up for the game than some of our stars who will only think they have to turn up to progress to the final

  18. Shaun Maloney will be 32 years old this month. He is, and always has been, a sick note. In 11 seasons in the Celtic first team, over two spells, he had one good season then left six months later. Kris Commons has scored as more goals over the last two seasons as Maloney did in his whole career with us. Why would we even consider signing him?

Was that the david robertson goal,i was at that game, a tight call if i remember, certainly not as blatant some against us.

The ’99 decider, that was my take on it too. When the coin hit him, i turned to a mate and said ‘thats them getting a penalty now’

I always though he was decent up until that day at CP.
