Historic Kazak win, view from Russia

1082

Celtic were not the only seeds to get a bloody nose in this week’s Champions League play-off round first leg games.  Lyon and Real Sociedad looked well matched before the game but Lyon’s 0-2 home defeat suggests the seeds were outclassed.

Austria Vienna were the team I wanted this round but despite indifferent domestic form they upset the odds and beat Dinamo Zagreb 0-2 in Croatia.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Schalke’s 1-1 home draw with Poak Salonika.

Our defeat was, apparently, an historic sporting occasion for a country who are only a decade or so into their relationship with the game.  Kazak prime minister, Serik Akhmetov, went into the home dressing room after the game on Tuesday to congratulate Shakhter and bask in the fruits of his sports development policies, but I hear there is trepidation ahead of their trip to Glasgow.

Top Russian TV analyst, Vasily Utkin, predicted, “Celtic will solve all the problems before second game, they will learn what mistakes they did in Astana and they will show their real power. If this happens I’m pretty sure Celtic will go through.

“In the previous round Shakhter beat Albanian champions Skenderbeu 3-0 but in Albania they were down 3-0.  They are the team whose emotions are very important.  If Celtic start the game well at Celtic Park, with all their songs from the stands and support given by their fans, the players from Karaganda may start the game on their knees.

“Their only chance will be on the counter attack.  Whether this will be productive is the question for Celtic.  A goal for Shakhter would complicate Celtic’s situation.

“I see Celtic reaching the Champions League group games. They are Champions League quality. Whatever Shakhter will do they are not Champions League quality, at least not yet.”

“This… is a question for Celtic” is the key phrase.  Champions League qualification is in our own hands.  Beat Shakhter Karagandy by more than 2-0 at home is as good an offer as anyone will get to qualify for the Champions League.

I suspect the player wannted away. Kenny Miller strikes me as a money grabber with little loyalty to any club. he had the chance to be a cracking player but never stayed anywhere any length of time to make a place in any team his own. Had a very decent career.

He was just starting to hit form when we let him go but we got him for nothing and the rumours were he wanted back to Rangers. He cost us £0 and I believe we got £3m for him and replaced him with Zurawksi who had a much better strike rate.

Kenny has made decent money out the game and I have had a pint with him in Livi a couple of times and comes across as a decent fella.

I didn;t think he was ever going to be a great player for Celtic but we will never know if the return to form would have produced something of a better run in our side. I think the move to Derby was all but done and dusted. The pressure was off and he rattled a couple of crackers in at Pittodrie. I will always remember his goal against Deid Co. Put £2 on Gravesen and 2-0 the Hoops. He made me £300 that day. Odds were 150/1.

from a grey and misty north Glasgow,

lots been happening and sad to say that I lost my elderly father lately. He enjoyed a good life, mainly because he was a good Celtic man, but I and my family will miss him and his insight. He went smiling though, not least at constant entertainment from Sevco. Unfortunately I will miss the game tomorrow and happy to know our seats will have close family in them cheering on the Bhoys.

Hope there is a new striker by Monday and nervous about the game against Karagandy.

Take care bhoys and enjoy life looking after each other.

I posted this previously about the standing areas

There seems to be some debate on here about standing areas.I have thought about this for some time and was about to post when the GB debate appreared so it seemed appropriate to comment.

I do have some experience in construction so any opinion is based on my own experience and also further to a chat with a structural engineer friend of mine.[St Mirren fan]

There would seem to be several issues to be resolved with regards to the provision of as standing area

    LOCATION

    —————

Where would it be placed?Well you can rule the following areas

    TOP TEIRS-[incline too steep]

LOWER SOUTH STAND [too close to directors box]!!!

NORTH STAND UPPER AND LOWER [cant see it there -investors area]

CORNER AREAS-[i believe the incline in these corners would prevent it being there]

So that leaves the areas behind the goals-with the Jock Stein stand probably being the most favoured area ?

    PERMISSIONS

    ———————

The alterations would require applications in the form of drawings and operational plans to be made to the following local authority departments.

    BUILDING CONTROL

    LICENSING

    POLICE and possible FIRE BRIGADE

From submission to approval[hopefully ]the process would take 8-12 weeks to be granted.

Planning may also have a say if the fabric of the stadium is being altered.

    CONSTRUCTION

    ————————

Celtic Park in the main is constructed new sections are a steel frame construction with pre cast concrete panels attached and inserted to form the seating structure.Walls are generallly blockwork infills.

The steel frame structure will have been designed for an all seated stadium with the pre cast insert panels which form the seats and stairs designed at a particular angle and incline to afford the best viewing angles when seated. If you deviate from this for standing the existing pre cast panels would not be fit for this purpose and new cast panels would be required to be fitted at an incline/angle more suited for standing viewing.Again the concrete grade would also be required to be upgraded to accommodate more fixings for crash barriers and deflect any resonance occurring which can alter the integrity of the concrete when thousand of fans jump up and down[no lateral movement please!!]-Think the ole Apollo upper balcony!!

The problem might be that the lower steel frame would almost certainly require to be adapted therefore to

accomodate the new standing area concrete panels.

    WHEN?
———-

I think timing is everything here. This operation would almost certainly not be able to be carried out during the season due to misplacement of fans and the simple logistics of craning in large section of concrete panels and taking out existing structure.

There would also be damage to the pitch area by machinery involved.

So it would be best during the summer months-however with The Commonwealth games coming up cant see it happening next year.

Pleased that the GB situation appears resolved.

Internal strife made public just gives ammo to our enemies.

Hope that the club will seriously look at safe standing area.

Still extremely miffed re lack of transfer activity, now Dylan to go in loan?

    Hail Hail

    _________________________________

Where is Dylan going on loan to?

Going on loan is a good thing as long as it is going to the right Club. Dundee Utd or Aberdeen up here, if not, a Championship team down there would be beneficial to all parties.

  7. Biggest blunder Peter Lawwell made was selling Miller. Cost us three titles. Difficult to say for sure but I reckoned at the time the statements made by Tommy and Gordon led everyone to believe they were less than happy about it, which is putting it mildly.

    Uncle Fester,

Naw we’ll no just leave it at that, it’s you that’s bang out of order it’s you that’s happily encouraging people to reduce their expectations in line with corporate policy nothing to do with football.

Being happy with out lot is not ambitious, making excuses for sad aspiration management and telling us we can’t attract good players is disrespectful, you have no idea if we can attract good players do you ?

You don’t have a clue if we can pay £5M for a player or even your quoted £7M or what their wage demand would be but that doesn’t stop you from telling us as if it was a fact.

Get over yourself, as I said its the message you and the board are spouting that is likely to discourage players with ambitions to play for Celtic, there will be plenty of quality players out there who’d jump at the chance to ply their trade in front of our support. Continually perpetuating the myth that no one wants to play for us is corporate policy and IMO shameful.

That is IMO what VMHAN did.

He needs no defending from me,but yours was a really cheap shot.

    Hope yer proud.

  12. Just for the record, Liam Miller joined Manchester United for free on 1 July 2004.

Gordon Strachan became manager of Celtic on 1 June 2005.

Liam was offered a new contract at Celtic but chose not to sign it and signed a pre-contract with Manchester United in January 2004.

  13. Half the supporters that were in 111 were supporters from other parts of the ground.

I’m led to believe that there are approximately 90 official GB members, so if they’re going to be issued with Paper tickets on the day, where are the other 100s going to be seated, they won’t get into 111 without a paper ticket, if they go to the ticket office to get their paper ticket, and are told by ticket office that your seat is in the JS stand, It may give a clue to how many infiltrated into section 111.

I know that there are supporters who are officially located in 111, but there are many who shouldn’t be in that section at all, that will be another problem that will have to be fixed in the coming weeks.

Anyway welcome back too the Green Brigade, you would have been missed,if the problem hadn’t been fixed.

  14. Vmhan

Just in from a funeral and read your post. Told your mother on Sunday what you were suggesting you were going to do. Need to get her to light a candle next Sunday so that you will keep faith.

In a sense I know how you feel. Think I told you about the phone call I received from a Kelly asking me if I trusted Fergus McCann. My answer was reasonably polite for me on those sort of occasions. Apart from anything else my granny was a McCann and ye must respect yir granny.

Hope you keep travelling. Said on here before that I have the greatest admiration for you guys who travel from afar. That apart in the diaspora your are the ones spreading the message about the ‘Tic.

  15. Canamalar,

We are not gonna agree so why keep at it? You’re not gonna make me change my mind.

I’m happy with the way Celtic are run and have tried to validate my reasons for that and you’re not. That’s your perogative. Fine. No problem.

I’ve already said we need new faces up front & in midfield which would indicate that I’m not entirely happy with our lot. However, I believe the Club are doing all they can to rectify that. Am I wrong just because we haven’t brought anyone in for those positions?

Of course we can attract good players, that is not in question. I never said we can’t attract good players. I said that proven, established players don’t want to play in Scotland and I stand by that. Do good players have to cost millions of pounds? No they don’t.

I believe we could indeed pay £5m-7m for a player. I couldn’t say for sure but I believe we could. So you are correct in your view that I don’t have a clue whether we could or not.

On the flipside of that, do you have a clue whether or not we have bid that sort of money for a player during this window? No you don’t. So neither of us has a clue then, eh?

Think of me what you will, call me a happy-clapper or whatever. Nothing I can do about that. You’ve got your views on Celtic, I have mine and they differ considerably. That’s life.
