Hooper and Samaras ready to rip Rangers

636

Neil Lennon was right to emphasise the importance of discipline ahead of tomorrow’s game against Rangers; there must be a high probability that 22 players will not be on the field at the end.  Beram Kayal in particular should expect tumbling Rangers players anywhere in the vicinity of his tackling.

Rangers’ squad is sufficiently thin that there was no chance they would allow the opportunity to appeal Elbows McCulloch’s red card to pass.  McCulloch is seen as part of the problem by a lot of Rangers fans, concerned at their recent malaise, but he is as experienced on these occasions as anyone who will play tomorrow.  Celtic will need to dominate him and Steven Davis if they to win the midfield battle.

It was at least three years ago Celtic Quick News prefixed McCulloch with the name ‘Elbows’.  An elbow is the face is remarkably effective at asserting dominance, something McCulloch knows too well.  It may be that the player’s overt physicality will be inhibited by his recent red card, just as team mate Shauny Aluko declined to tumble in the box when presented with the opportunity on Saturday after recently being out-ed as a diver.

Both teams will deploy unfamiliar central defensive partnerships, which will worry both Lennon and McCoist.  Rangers’ Jelavic has looked like he wants to be elsewhere in recent weeks but  it he gets an opportunity to put himself in the shop window he is likely to take it.  Winning the early battles may sap his enthusiasm.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’ve written a couple of versions of my match report already but in all of them Gary Hooper and Georgios Samaras are match winners.  If Celtic can win the midfield battle these two – hopefully Samaras from the wing – will win the points for Celtic.

STV agrees surprise deal with Rangers

Scotland’s main ITV channel, STV, has agreed to go into partnership with one of Glasgow’s football teams, Rangers.

The club announced the deal on its website yesterday, stating that they “are working together to capitalise on commercial and brand opportunities in Scotland and internationally.”

It added: “The two organisations have agreed to explore opportunities on a variety of online commercial prospects including content development and brand promotions.”

There is nothing on the STV site about the partnership, which came as a surprise to Scottish sports writers.

They are acutely aware of the risk STV is taking in favouring Rangers in a city divided by footballing (and religious) allegiance to either Rangers or Celtic.

Some members of the National Union of Journalists also point out that such a deal could compromise the channel’s reporters.

One NUJ member told me: “I seriously fear that our members on the STV newsdesk will not be able to do their job properly, and may not be allowed to do so.

“For example, one of the biggest football stories in Scotland concerns Rangers football club’s tax troubles. Can they report fairly on that? Will they report it at all?”

According to the Rangers website story, the new partnership begins today with the latest Celtic-Rangers match, which will be transmitted online on the Rangers site.

Rangers’ chief operations officer, Ali Russell, said: “We are delighted to be working with STV to develop and maximise joint online brand and commercial opportunities that benefit both organisations.”

And the story also quotes STV’s director of broadcast services, Bobby Hain, as saying: “We are delighted to be working with Rangers in the online area and believe that this arrangement will be hugely beneficial to both parties…

“We aim to work with a wide range of football and sporting organisations, creating opportunities for them to promote their brand in innovative ways.”

A website favouring Celtic noted that STV appears to be keeping quiet about the deal and commented:

“Scottish companies have been noticeably reluctant to go into deals with one or other of the big Glasgow clubs with Tennents typical of those businesses that realise that they risk alienation from a significant part of their core market if they sponsor one club but not the other.”

Ibrox plus Auchenhowie is a +£50M deal.

Where did you get those imaginary figures from, Auchenhowie is on a long term lease, which I would assume is non-transferable and will be null and void on the event of a liquidation – It is not an rfc asset as far as I’m led to believe. So that leaves Ibrox – who will pay anything more than £10M? It isn’t worth anything to anyone else outside running a football team named the huns.

Yes MBB is hunkering until the FTT decision is made, however I don’t believe this is to sell the assets as a profit, i believe it is to use as an excuse to phoenix the huns and try and start them again debt free, using his loating charge to secure all assets and any cash they have at that time. Now if someone did come in with a £50M bid for Ibrox to turn it into flats – that would cause him a wee problem….. :-)

I fear the weather may put the wind up the ol’ Gazebo tonight. I’ve put Bourne on standby down by the Clyde just in case.

Still, I’ll be where the Gazebo ought to be around 15 minutes before kick off.

  8. Transfer rumour from the Guardian:

“Coyle is also among those who have been offered the exciting chance to sign Jean-Alain Boumsong, who wants to leave Panathinaikos and hopes someone back in Blighty will have forgotten all about his time at Newcastle and be willing to employ him. Aston Villa, QPR and Rangers are the other lucky clubs on the list.”

  9. The STV Hun link up is a classic piece of news management. The huns are preparing themselves for bad news. BBC Scotland can be dismissed as being a rogue element that are in dispute with the huns due to the proposed action by Whyte against the BBC documentary. All printed media do not need to fall into line. By shoehorning STV into this public deal where no monies are mentioned it allows both to continue with the hun protection racket at license payers expense. STV are far to weak and cognisant to the hun situation to do anything other than be subordinate.

I have to state that having witnessed the SNP government, Scottish Police, Edinburgh law courts, The SFA, The SPL, BBC Scotland, STV, the Scottish printed media that independence for Scotland is a dangerous road to be taken. The country is a mediaeval backwater ran by weak insular people.

Gillingham winger Chris Whelpdale’s scrotum split by ‘shocking’ tackle

The Gillingham winger Chris Whelpdale is set for a spell on the sidelines after a tackle in the 2-1 win at Crawley on Monday split his scrotum open.

The former Peterborough player was given treatment for the injury, which occurred late on in the game, and is doubtful for the Dagenham match on Friday.

Andy Hessenthaler, the Gills manager, told the club’s website: “He’s probably going to have five stitches in his testicles, believe it or not. It’s ripped his testicles open. It’s absolutely disgusting, it was a shocking challenge for me and worthy of a red card.

“I’m not making that up, we’ve seen it in there. It’s a horrific injury and I’m sure his wife won’t be too happy about that tonight either!”

The last time i was too late for the gallogate pubs, shutters were all down, so will need to time it earlier to get there, but to be honest, listening to the same ‘folk’ music songs, over and over for almost 4 hours or listening to youngsters sing all the add ons they cant sing at the game doesn’t float my boat.

  15. The wind is wild in Glasgow.

How bad do you think it would need to get before the game’s called off? Any danger of that?

I’d be devastated. Fully expecting a win tonight.

  16. Good Luck Neil Lennon.

I’ve never faced a bomb or a bullet in the name of Celtic. You have my respect; unequivocal and unconditional respect.

  18. SFA chief Stewart Regan in Twitter storm after claiming no footballers worked in Scotland on Boxing Day

Dec 27 2011 By Fraser Wilson

SFA chief executive Stewart Regan sparked a Twitter frenzy today after wrongly claiming that no footballers had played on Boxing Day in Scotland – despite 11 matches going ahead in the SFL.

Regan, responding to a Tweet which said football administrators should be at work on days when footballers are working, stated: “no footballers worked Xmas Day or Boxing Day either in Scotland”.

The slip was immediately pounced upon by fans of clubs in the first, second and third divisions who had left their homes to support their teams on Boxing Day.

In addition, many pointed out that players delayed their turkey dinners and reported for training on Christmas Day in preparation for their matches 24 hours later.

Four hours after his initial faux pas Regan, who could not be contacted because the SFA office was closed, reasoned that he had been commenting on a thread relating specifically to Old Firm players.

He Tweeted: “The thread related to Celtic and Rangers footballers who had played on Saturday and whose next match was not until this week.”

Regan added: “A training session is a little different to a full day in the office for admin staff over the holiday period”.

But his explanation cut no ice with supporters.

One exasperated fan Tweeted: “Hardly reassuring when the chief exec of the SFA @StewartRegan doesn’t know there was a full fixture list outside the SPL on Boxing Day” while another said: “This man runs the SFA!!!”
