Hooper best since Larsson?

981

Neil Lennon suggested Gary Hooper, unquestionably his favourite son, was Celtic’s best striker since Henrik Larsson.  It’s an interesting question.

The list is long: Chris Sutton, John Hartson, Henri Camara, Craig Bellamy, Dion Dublin, Scott McDonald, Marc-Antoine Fortune, Chris Killen, Maciej Zurawski, Kenny Miller, Derek Riordan, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, Georgios Samaras, Robbie Keane, Diomansy Kamara, Olivier Kapo, Anthony Stokes, Pawel Brozek, Moh Bangura, Daryl Murphy, Miku and Lassad.

Apologies if I’ve overlooked someone.  That’s 22 strikers in nine years (it’s a bit soon to consider Amido Balde), some of whom were loans, but the list doesn’t include the many Celtic youth players who got their shot at first team football, or those, like Tony Watt, who were signed for low fees from lower league Scottish clubs.

Chris Sutton and John Hartson were already at the club when Henrik left, but it quickly became evident they were past their best.  Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy were quality but only played a dozen or so games, so can’t really be considered as competition to Hooper.

Maciej Zurawski arrived a year after Larsson left and had a phenomenal first season at the club.  He made his debut after the 5-0 reversal to Artmedia but inspired Celtic to a 4-0 win six days later.  Maciej was on fire when he joined and only failed to score in five league games before the league win in April but he never found anything close to that consistency again.  Record: 22 goals in 55 games.

Scott McDonald’s YouTube clip of goals in the Champions League and against Rangers will have featured heavily in the portfolio as his agent looked for a new club this year.  His goals got us into the Champions League, beat European champions, Milan, and regularly put our (then) nearest rivals to the sword. Record: 51 goals in 88 games.

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink arrived in summer 2006 and immediately outshone Zurawski.  His debut as a substitute against Hibs transformed Celtic and won the game.  His signing was pivotal in Celtic winning the title in 2007.  Record: 34 goals in 78 games.

Georgios Samaras arrived 18 months after Vennegoor of Hesselink and alongside Barry Robson pushed Celtic over the line for three in a row.  2008 was a fabulous year for Georgios but although he’s still a forward, he’s not really been a striker since.  Record: 41 goals in 138 games.

With 63 goals, 95 games, Gary Hooper’s scoring record is better than anyone else’s, but the challenge to be best since Larsson was simple, just outperform Scott McDonald.  With all those strikers as competition, that’s not as high as the bar could be.

The events of the past year kinda lead me to believe that castle greyskull was gonna crumble and all the years of unfairness would be redressed.

It now looks to me like Celtic will crumble first-because those with integrity will eventually get sick of the corruption.

    just a thought…

    Sorry amigo/a

    What a load of shite!

  2. The more good players we have for any position is good in my book. If he has been reared by Ajax, he might well be able to teach our young lhads a thing or 2.

Am I right in thinking that “it’s only semantics” Nevin has contradicted himself with regard to his condemnation of the Celtic support during that Cup final? Come on, Pat, set the record straight. Why did you say what you said? Was it to keep your job in the Scottish media?

Could it really be true that Joe Ledley is on the way out of Celtic? the last I read was he was happy and looking to sign a new deal are we not prepared to pay what he is after ?I think he would be a big loss he is the quiet man who in my book never lets the hoops down.I think we need to stop anyone else leaving other than Kelvin Wilson who is homesick if to many leave the team will be lucky to make any progress.H.H.

No googling, but who can tell me how many appearances David Moyes played for the hoops?

    Interesting wee story about David Moyes;

As a player with Cambridge United, he received abuse from team-mate Roy McDonough for his religious belief; Moyes is a practising Christian. McDonough felt that religion was distracting them from focusing on playing, speaking of Moyes, Alan Comfort and Graham Daniels he said: “The three of them sat in the changing room with a little black book, discussing their beliefs, when they should have been getting psyched up for a relegation scrap.

Following a 3–3 draw with Wigan Athletic on 9 March 1985, McDonough, who was 26 years old at the time, states that he “battered” 20-year-old Moyes for not putting sufficient effort into the game.

Do you mean that Law, Daly et al are just training with The Rangers and not being paid, on the understanding that they will get a contract as from 1 September?

I don’t see it – unless there was a nod and a wink with a big “signing bonus” involved.

And the press reports have all specified that they signed 2/3/whatever year contracts – not that I’m confident they would get it right.

  18. interesting lennie used a simile (ish). We’ll never have a ‘ better than’ ! Googling ‘best since’ you get Chris Sutton followed by a lot of entries for hoops. Hooper was great for us in this wee era for celtic, just don’t ask him lace Larsson’s boots. My favourite thing about Larsson was how he would hold the ball up through sheer skill and determination and how that kept us in games we were struggling in. It was a skill of his which generally went unmentioned. I don’t want to rehash the recent debate but I don’t expect to get and keep another larsson under the current model- it’ll be a long time before we see his like again – I’m not too keen on Lennie reminding us of what we’re missing
