CELTIC have lost out to Newcastle in the race to sign Queen’s Park starlet Reagan Thomson.

The highly-rated 16-year-old midfielder will quit the Hampden outfit to join Steve Bruce’s side after agreeing a two-and-a-half year deal, according to a media report.

The Tyneside outfit beat off a late bid from the Hoops to snatch the Scotland Under-17 international who will now join up with the St James’s Park Under-23 squad.

Queen’s are expected to receive around £50,000 with add-ons for the teenager when the deal is completed.

The Premier League club have monitored the progress of the youngster since the start of the season and were convinced to make their move after watching him star for his country’s Under-17s in the win over Iceland last year.

Thomson has made nine first-team appearances for the League Two team this term.

The news will come as a disappointment to the champions who looked to be winning the pursuit of the playmaker until Newcastle’s late intrusion.
