How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

  1. TBJ says Wee Oscar Knox is in heaven with the angels on

    Uly

I watched the stv news and pretty sure nfl said that Celtic fans have their beliefs on the subject and the zombies have theirs

He did say when they run onto the park and the stadiums jumping it will be like Celtic v rangers

Stv headlines spun the story that nfl says it’s still old firm and he should know better than to give them an interview

Why would stv go to Bolton to interview their Irish managers progress

  2. I logged into CQN early morning recently and read a post from Canamalar addressed to Alfie Noakes and condemning him for his “venomous poison”.

Naturally I scanned back to the offending post to sample the venomous poison.

It was nothing more than a defence of Peter Lawwell’s performance as Celtic CEO.

I strongly disagree with Alfie Noakes politically, but he has as much right as Canamalar and the rest of his clique to post his views.

Just because someone spends 17 hours a day on CQN doesn’t make it his blog.

    Venomous poison indeed.

I am not sure if playing Lustig instead of Matthews would be a good idea he has played very little football since returning from injury.I wouldnt like him to get another injury and we lose him again for a few weeks.Matthews has played not to bad recently so I would play him.H.H.

  4. Mike…,

Are you kidding me, he’s had one half decent game in his last 5 appearances. He’s muscled off the ball by wee boys, and only only ever looks any good when we are overrunning the opposition, he does not rule the midfield, only looks any good when our other midfield players are in control. Sorry pal, I think we need players who make their own space and control it. As yet Bitin has failed to do that, in my expert opinion

Don’t think there are any cliques on here

A big Celtic lonely hearts club

    But definitely nae cliques

  6. Missed the STV interview. Did Lennon actually use the words ‘old firm’? If he did I am surprised that more have not been on here to take exception to his statement.

  7. Joe Filippis Haircut on

TBJ. Lennie clearly stated when asked that he believed it was still the Old Firm no ifs or buts that is what he said. H.H.

  8. The ‘same club’ myth is important to them as it maintains their sense of establishment, supremacy and invulnerability, coupled with the ‘the most successful club’ label which is oh so important to them.

If they are acknowledged as the new club with no titles, then, in time, we will surpass their ’54 titles’ and they lose their tenuous claim to the ‘world record’ – and they cannot contemplate that challenge to their ‘WATP’ culture, especially to us.

On a more fundamental level, if they remain the ‘same club’, then they have stiffed hundreds of creditors out of tens of millions of pounds, and only had to spend a few seasons in the lower leagues in return.

This is a formula for chaos in football financial terms and could destroy the already precarious financial basis for Scottish football finance.

  9. Uncle Tom,

your last post wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that you constantly embarrass yourself when you run out of logic in our sparring sesions would it?

  10. Tom McLaughlin

That sounds like a point not answered.

Your complaint was that people were being silenced or censored.

Now your complaint is that the language used to criticise was too extreme. Have you always used moderate language in your criticisms? And what about your original point- who was censoring/silencing?

P.S. Who is in canamalar’s clique? Or is it another imaginary construction?

  11. mike in toronto on

    Canamalar

In MY expert opinion, you are not entirely wrong :)

I agree that, for his size (tall), NB does not use it as much as he should. But, I think he is undervalued in Scotland, where people like to see their midfielders running about like madmen. He moves more than people expect on first impression, and, more importantly, he keeps the ball moving (and forward more than any of the rest) …. which is the one thing we have been lacking.

But, leaving that aside for a moment … if not NB, who else would you play in midfield? This is and has been the largest problem for us for some time now …. since VW left, there has been a hole the size of a VW in the middle of the park for us.

    ntassoolla,

Why do you need to know how many people contributed and why are you so angry about it?

I read some of your posts yesterday and you seemed angry that some/ a portion off/ a minority etc Celtic supporters paid for the advert.

    Why?

You seem to be fishing for names here? and I think the people responsible deserve the right to anonymity for very obvious reasons.

Can you articulate why you think the advert should not have been printed?

Do you not think it was an accurate statement of facts?

You are allowed to say that you don’t think it is representative of the Celtic supports view but can you demonstrate why with some facts.?

Incidentally, if the support don’t think the ad is representative of the facts they are wrong.

Can you answer these questions please?

  13. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Nir Bitton is the nearest thing to George Connelly that I have seen since George walked out. He uses the ball very well and is always available to accept a pass and for me would be one of the first names on the team sheet.H.H.

  14. mike in toronto on

Canamalar … you should listen to JFH… he is a very wise man. (although, I am too young to really remember GC… but I get JFH’s drift).

  15. mullet and co 2 @18:43. I asked how many. Not who.

Don’t impute or try put words into my mouth.

I don’t have to justify to you any of my questions.

Asking someone tp prove a negative is a false argument.

It is for CQN just answer the question of how many and thus settle it.

He did not utter the words old firm. However, he was asked did he still consider it to be the old firm, he replied “yes” and Trent on to qualify his answer.

My opinion, SMSM at their best, mischief making. Their piece hardly mentioned his achievements to date as Manager at Bolton, I rest my case.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

A man is dying of the same disease as one of our greatest players had. He played for Rangers.

Charity always creates more debate than it should.

It surprises me that so many people are able to make the decision to leave their beds in the morning such is their intransigence to taking any decision at all.

Instead of coming on here and bumping their gums why not get a few contributions together and take it out an advert in the Bolton News stating that some Celtic Supporters disagreed with Mr Lennons assertions and were highly offended

Its the way forward you know

Bhoys He is a young lad learning the game so now and then he may take time to grow into a game but for me he deserves his place in the team. The Bhoy is calm and he reads the game well and he will become another player that big Peter will sell for top dollar. H.H.

“So telling someone that defending Peter Lawwell is “venomous poison” is not to be questioned in your book.

    Dear oh dear again.”

If you keep reading things that are not there, we are going to have a long and tiresome conversation.

P.S. Just to be absolutely clear, the above post is not an invitation for you to shut up, stop posting, jump off a cliff, strip naked, support Rangers, self harm, or write a novel.
