How Stein managed big game weeks

1113

I asked Archie Macpherson to speak about Jock Stein at CQN11, to mark the 50th anniversary of Jock’s appointment as Celtic manager, and then stayed quiet as he spoke.  One of the points he made was that Jock would have a news plan ahead of a big game.

Good news would be held back until a few days before the game, giving fans and players a lift, to ensure maximum impact.  Bad news could break at any time, but it would have to fight for column inches.  As an operator, he is still worth studying.  Celtic should plan to dominate this week’s news accordingly.

Apart from that horrible game away to Legia, Ronny Deila has not been to a sell-out Celtic game in a large stadium, and even that was only 30,000.  It’s possible he’s never even played before a large sell-out crowd, so you can be sure he’ll not be short of people telling him what to expect, and how to prepare for Hampden on Sunday.

There are some obvious pitfalls for him to avoid, in particular to ensure his players are not provoked into retaliation, but taking too much advice would be a mistake (will not stop us offering plenty advice).  He’s spent all season playing and preparing one way, anything which gets in the way of this will only put him off his game.  The manager needs to employ a filter this week, tell everyone he’s got the situation covered and get on with the game.

Loving the way recipients of Rangers EBT loans have been asked about an advert dealing with the consequences of their loans, but are not actually asked about the loans themselves. These guys only agree speak on the understanding they are not asked about their loans, none of which are or will be repaid.

I accept that if the loan recipient is being asked about yesterday’s charity match, or some other football game, there’s no place to ask him about his loan, but these guys are regularly commenting on the consequences of their loans, without ever having to deal with the awkward question.

    Re: The add, Nailed it.

I was trying to explain that to my wife, it wasn’t some Celtic/Rangers football thing, it was way bigger than that. It was about getting the facts out there, in one place, in print, for everyone to read.

I was so proud of the people behind getting that done, but at the same time, so ashamed of Scotland, because we had to wait years, and even then, people had to pay for an advert. An advert, neither that newspaper or any other, seems prepaird to print their own article, with the actual facts. Shocking and unbelievable really.

Well done to WC and everyone else involved again. But I do expect it will be a long time, if ever, before we can be proud or our football association or our media. Sad.

Don’t know why anyone would advocate the Wattenacio tactic of playing a right back at right wing. Maybe if we were away to Real Madrid. It’s a different story playing on the wing, expected to take a man on and drift inside to link up play; as opposed to being an overlapping fullback.

  4. Tom McLaughlin @18:06 – “So when did the new rule come in that new posters on CQN require established posters to “vouch” for them?”

It’s always been the case that a clique on CQN prefer to question someone’s right to speak rather then question what the person says.

Regarding the advert CQN is the place to raise questions. Regardless of allegiance.

  5. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo on

I like the fact that the advert was published. It was published against the innate modus operandi of that particular organ. They done so because they made money from it. A thumbnail sketch of our board if ever there was one except I would drop innate when describing our PLC.

  6. Someone said it earlier – the equation is simple:

    1. Same club? OK then they are morally bankrupt tax and sports cheats who morally owe the tax payer millions and assorted others the same. They have continued in this squalid tradition by failing to live within their means since somehow (no one who believes the same club thing can explain this) they ended up in Division 3 despite not being ‘relegated’ which would have been out with the rules of the game. I digress – they have overspent their way to D1 without identifying how they are a sustainable business. Pony up to those who are owed or remain forever morally in the gutter.

    2. New Club? OK then they are a tribute act whose history started in 2012 and have already shown themselves incapable of living within their means, essentially spending more than they can afford.

Either way, they don’t look like good neighbours to me.

We know RD prefers a 433, so I wondered if he would try LH in the middle. If he does, I think it would be LG, AS and SJ as the front three.

I just dont see him throwing LH into this game, however….

I have a hunch he will try to shoehorn KC into the team, but that seems to throw us off ….

Looking in, STV Huns? – Enjoy your new club’s pumping on Sunday by the mighty Hoops.

  10. Johnnyrambo67

The reason I suggest starting Matthews, is that I expect them to come out and try to kick lumps out of us

IMHO the game will be won in last 20 where Jamesy can play havoc with their tired defence.

Rankers will have their moments in the game, and if we need to go 4411, or 4321 Matthewx is more suitable.

Other option is bring in Efe and put him or Denayer in midfield

  11. Crowd funding is when funds are raised for a project, in a public, open forum, and the project then goes ahead.

Calling the advert a product of crowd funding is a pathetic attempt to appear trendy and create the impression of a groundswell of support.

As was the headline “A Statement from Celtic Supporters”.

    Not from this one.

I asked yesterday “How many different individuals contributed financially?”

CQN keep records and have the answer to this question.

Perhaps I should direct my question to the ASA.

  12. Baring injury Sunday’s team will be the same as the one that lined up against Motherwell, can see the only possible change being Lustig for Matthews.

  13. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Lennie on the news still believes its the old firm.He has not approached Celtic about Kris Commons he believes Kris would eventualy make a good Coach for Celtic. If sometime down the road he is offered theCeltic job he would have no hesitation about accepting it ( I find that strange as he has only just left) that for me about sums up his interview. H.H.

“What if you’re neither in this famous clique nor ganged up on by it?

    Is that a different clique?”

If you’re feeling left out I’ll try and get a squad together that you can either join or be subjected to a doing from. Your choice. Or you could do both.

Got me fretting and hoping too – God help me if the Black Ops artiste changes his moniker to Cheech n Chong.

  16. Tom McLaughlin (& Ntasoola)

“So when did the new rule come in that new posters on CQN require established posters to “vouch” for them?”

There is no rule. It was a request from one poster not an instruction from Paul.

You both seem to want to embrace victimhood and see restrictions there that are imaginary.

“Clique” is a word thrown out as a jibe by those who can’t understand why their wisdom has not been worshipped by all.

I think this is exactly the sort of game for Biton … we have to match their energy, but we will beat them with your skill and smarts … and NB is, by far, our smartest mid. They will wear down, so we have to be smart with the ball, but keep it moving … which NB does better than anyone else we have.

I think Denayer is going to show his class in this game. He is my pick form MOM.

Just remember … you heard it here first.

  18. mike in toronto

Yeah I don’t think Henderson will start either. I think that’s why Stokes and Forrest weren’t involved at the weekend, taking no chances with them.

I think the movement and link up play is better without Commons, though you do miss his goal threat. If he plays I’m pretty sure it will be in place of Forrest, with him and Johansen interchanging.

Any combination should be more than good enough.

  19. mike in toronto on

    Canamalar … I meant ‘our skill’ …

But, having a second thought on MOM … think it might be the breakthrough game for SJ.

  20. ulysses mcghee - a demographic of one on

If that is true about Neil Lennon then I’ve lost a lot of respect for him which I once had.

He should know better, or he should know better to say nothing.

Cute enough to use the supports views when it suited him – placing the league cup in front of the Green Brigade remains a massive statement at the expense of the whole Celtic support.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I suppose, but knowing when or if to use it is a greater skill to learn.

  21. Ntasoola

I think this may be the second time your mistake has been pointed out to you but…

It is a statement from Celtic Supporters (correct and true)

It is not a statement by or on behalf of ALL Celtic supporters. Why would you cross the road to take offence at associating yourself with the view, when it clearly did not do so?

Maybe, if it is not too “trendy” (thought that word died out in the 70s) for you you might crowd fund an advert stating that you believe they are a continuation club or any other point you wish to make.

  22. Ntassoolla – I’m going to form my own clique.
