Huge day as Sword of Damocles hovers over Rangers

327

Today the Scottish Premier League will vote on proposals to allow a Newco to parachute straight into the top league in the country if an existing SPL club goes into liquidation.  Fans from 11 of the 12 clubs have overwhelmingly opposed the idea.  Rangers fans are split, some would prefer a Newco to apply to the Scottish Football League, others think a Newco should be allowed into the SPL without penalty.

Long before this vote was a glint in the eye of the SPL, it was first discussed on Celtic Quick News.  Last October we raised the alarm that Rangers were undertaking an enormous charade.  They were preparing to liquidate in order to avoid the consequences of failing to pay their taxes for over a decade.

We also predicted they would present the SPL with a fait accompli – vote us ‘back’ or suffer our scorched earth policy, as we take the rest of you down.  For what it’s worth, I also predicted the league would capitulate and Celtic would stand alone in opposition.

10 of the 12 SPL clubs bank with Lloyds Banking Group (Celtic and Hearts excluded). For months I have suggested that LBG could threaten to withdraw overdraft facilities if clubs voted against the revenue Rangers bring but this is not the case. Clubs have a free vote, there is no banking overlord conspiring against democratic wishes, LBG, like the SFA Judicial Panel, have played this with a straight bat.

Right now, I have no idea how the vote will go.  The proposal to establish procedures to allow a phoenix club straight into the league could be passed or rejected.  If they are rejected, it may be because a majority would rather Newco was back without penalties, or it may be because clubs have listened to their fans and taken a stand.

If the vote goes against Rangers I expect we will see a rapid move to liquidate.  If it goes in their favour (and by that I mean a parachute, with penalties, is invented for them), liquidation becomes a more attractive prospect, if not, actually, attractive.

They would still have to overcome potential challenges from creditors, security of Craig Whyte over Ibrox, and, of course, the many penalties that Newco would inherit along with the gift of Rangers SPL share.  For now, this means last week’s SFA ban on signing players, but the alleged improper registration of players matter is coming over the hill soon, and the penalties for that… wow!

As I said, I have no idea which way the vote will go. Rangers are finished and it would genuinely be best for them if someone put them out of their misery and allowed them to start the recovery process, but in the light of the intimidation of Raith Rovers last week, it remains to be seen if the other SPL clubs are up to the task.

Most of us called last week’s SFA punishment wrong, what do you think will happen today?

Huge day. Huge, huge, day.

  1. Been looking for something to put above the mantlepiece.

King of Thailand, might just do it…

THE latest stop for the Thai Tims on their trip to Scotland was a visit to Glasgow City Chambers today (Monday) for a civic reception hosted by Lord Provost Bob Winter.

The children of the Good Child Foundation were welcomed to the city by the Lord Provost, and the kids presented him with a framed picture of the King of Thailand as a special gift. They also sang a number of songs, including The Celtic Song.

As an extra special surprise for the kids, Celtic stars Adam Matthews and Emilio Izaguirre popped along to see them. Not surprisingly, the kids immediately mobbed their Hoops heroes, as well as breaking into an impromptu version of the Emilio Izaguirre song.

The Thai Tims will be performing at Celtic Park before this Thursday´s SPL game against St Johnstone (KO: 7.45pm). The kids will be on the pitch about 7.10pm, so be there for 7pm on Thursday night to make sure you see the kids singing and welcome them to Paradise.

SPL clubs have agreed new sanctions against teams who fail to settle outstanding bills with other member clubs by the end of each calendar year.

At a general meeting, a new rule was introduced requiring clubs to ‘have no outstanding sums due to other SPL clubs as at 31 December in any year’.

Failure to do so would constitute a breach of SPL rules with punishments ranging from fines, points deductions to expulsion from the league.

Other rules to be introduced include from next season include, pitch protection rules will be introduced to minimise the risk of damage to pitches during pre-match warm-ups.

New media co-operation rules will also be put in place to ensure clubs co-operate with SPL broadcast partners.

So Rangers Media are now quoting Oliver Cromwell? That wouldn’t be the same Cromwell who brought the English Civil War to, er Scotland now would it?

  4. So hunmedia don’t want anyone who has ever worn green to have any position in the SFA.

    But…….

It’s absolutely fine for any ex-hun player, director or tea lady to be appointed.

It seems the huns don’t like the view from the back of the bus.

Not to worry only a week or two then they’ll have no seat on the bus at all.

    Stupid Hurtin Huns!!

thanks for that Partizan, seems to confirm my first impressions, will just have to try and educate them in all things Celtic

  11. lets not forget fellow celtic fans this is a club who have with out doubt been

cheating for over two decades and they and we now know this as does the

authorities, this is unprecedented anywhere that we know of, there must be

only one punishment truly fitting their crime expulsion anything else is a complete

travesty of sporting justice and integrity, if they are liquidated the old co and its

history must carry the stain for ever in the history books and rules enforced as to make sure this can never happen again, as for new co if they truly were to be a new co must do it the way any new club has to work their way up from the very bottom tier, now thats what would be integrity.

  12. Ref Rangers Media on SFA CEO

A few horrendous basic mistakes in the piece on SR….

I know the guy quite well and he has made some good and bad dcisions in his time but he is not in anyones pocket for sure…. Some glaring mistakes in his resume there esp re cricket…

More interestingly the same agency appointed Doncaster at SPL so by the same token he must also be in Celtics pocket ?

Finally Peter Lawwell at no time worked for Coors or Bass so never knew him before ?? indeed David Murray and Rangers had spent more time (about 4 hours pre /during a Champs League game)) in SR’s company than anyone at Celtic….

ASonOfDan – rangersmedia have outdone themselves today with their article on Stewart Regan and his ‘mysterious’ links to Celtic. It is brilliant.

So Stewart Regan’s “mysterious links” to Celtic are:

    * he knows Peter Lawwell.

    * Peter Lawwell, the chief executive of the biggest club in the league, also sits on an SFA committee with his peers

The fact they are going tonto about the Chief Exec of one of the two clubs without whom Scottish football would apparently fail getting appointed to a committe is priceless!

As for not having a transparent recruitment process, well let’s revisit the appointment of the last SFA Chief executive shall we? Covered extensively on this site – and certainly glossed over in the MSM – that man was a former Ranger whose business experience was as players’ agent and broadcast pundit but nothing even close to the CV the SFA themselves had suggested and when in the job that inexperience was cruelly exposed – he simply had no aptitude for the role and left after a turbulent 3 years (he lasted 3?!!). The story highlighted the (IMO) incestuous relationship between Rangers and the SFA when Smith was subsequently appointed director of football at Rangers.

  14. Trying to work out the links from Rangers Media between Regan and Celtic

If I understand the article correctly John Reid’s son had a Coors beer once with Regan in Delhi and Regan then played cricket with a building contractor used by Celtic in Cromwellian times

    Yeah?

If so, I can see why he has been so biased to us

  15. ST Sives. what i would like celtic to do is to upgrade the main stand .bit of an eyesore ,all that steel.and by the look of it needing a good clean and paint ,very dirty ,so come on the directors try and do something,
