Huge decision ahead for Neil Lennon

833

When they dispensed with Unai Emeri last weekend, Spartak Moscow brought to an end an experiment to bring sophistication to their team.  New caretaker manager, Valeriy Karpin, was manager immediately before Emeri, was also the man who appointed Emeri and stood over him as general manager of the club since moving from the dugout in the summer.

Karpin relies more on his strong, authoritative, personality than tactical innovation, which is likely to mean we face a more disciplined team in Glasgow next week that we faced in Moscow – there will be no brothel at the back.

My main concern is that the Kilmarnock/St Johnstone/Inverness tactics of defending solidly and taking their chances when going forward is perfectly suited for Karpin’s Spartak.  Against Benfica and Barcelona at home, Neil Lennon played it tight and incredibly tight respectively, which proved to be excellent decisions.  He has a huge call to make against Spartak, playing an adventurous game could leave us exposed.

This result is not to be taken for granted.

CQN Annual – perfect Christmas present

It was some comfort to see Celtic back on form last night, especially down the flanks, which were crucial in Moscow and could prove to be so again next week.  Hopefully the knocks and strains which have hampered the squad in recent weeks are beginning to fade ahead of our Christmas Cup Final.

    What was JJB?

If so,they have so much deadclub stock left,it will NEVER close.

    Unlike deadclub.

Oh,and also like newclub (soon-to-be deadclub II,the sequel)

  2. This post is mostly negative You have been warned!

I think Gordon Strachan, in his analysis, was blinded by the brilliance of Victor Wanyama.

Kayal and Ledley were both terrible in the Hearts game. The only reason their mistakes didn’t cost us was because 1) Vic cleaned up in the middle and 2) John Glynn has to be the stupidest manager in the SPL.

The blueprint for taking points off Celtic is already firmly established – 4-5-1, counterattacking football. For Hearts to go on the attack, giving up their midfield, was idiotic. Thank you for the 3 points, and goodnight.

I said a week ago that Lenny needed to experiment with his midfield in preparation for Spartak. In going with Vic in the centre, we won a game but learned nothing. Ledley is off form and has been for the last 6 games. Kayal couldn’t tackle to save himself. His only decent game in the last 8 was, ironically, the one v Inverness, where he wasn’t quite good enough to effect anything surrounded by sluggish teammates.

Would you be happy going into the Spartak game with a half-fit Brown (who, incidentally, looked superb on Tues but cannot be relied upon), and these two? If it works out, great, but it’s not looking promising. We go into this tie on a wing and a prayer.

Oh, and by the way, if Lenny plays Charlie Mulgrew at LB on Tuesday, he will be comitting football suicide. Leaving aside Charlie’s abysmal record in that position in the CL, his game was saved by those two assists on Wed night.

‘Well, I’ll take that,’ you might say. It’s fine against a Hearts team who were too disorganised to mount any kind of meaningful attack, and who squandered their chances when they did occur. Against experienced European opposition, Charlie’s giving away of the ball via aimless punts, and his poor positioning when teams steal possession, WILL cost us.

I’d play him in CM but for the fact that the only decent partner for him is Wanyama, the same of which can be said for just about every Celtic midfielder.

Vic won’t be there to cover for them on Tuesday!

It’s time for at least one of them to take the game by the scruff of the neck, or we could be in for a tough night.

No matterwhat opinions/thoughts anyone has re. Wednesday night v Spartak, the team will pick itself. Injury permitting, Lenny will pick what has become our ‘European’ team in our ‘Eurpopean’ formation. FF in goals, back 4 of Lust, Ambrose, Wilson, Izzy if fit, Matthews if not. Middle 4 of Brown, Kayal (in place of Victor) Ledley and Mulgrew. Sammi playing off Hooper up front. That leaves options from the bench, if needed, of Commons, Watt, Lassad and Miku.

I think I’ll stick with the analysis of a proven professional football player and experienced and successful manager

If I may say so, I consider your post to be somewhat arrogant ….do you have any significant experience in playing in or managing professional football teams?

I enjoy the craic with you re your team selections and your insistence on championing the causes of certain players

However…..the above post is IMO ..utter madness

Agree with up_over_goal about JL….in a flat run of form. BK was our big hope in spring 2011…hoping he just needs games to get back to that level…

In Salmondland shooting a Celtic player will probably only get you 6 months and it will be a majority verdict.

    Good post.

We will miss Vic big time, and unfortunately Broonie will last an hour at the very most.

However, maybe I have more confidence that you in Joe, Beram and Charlie.

That said, a lot depends on how seriously Spartak approach this game.

If they are up for it, under the new manager and under pressure from their fans to start performing, we could be in for a torrid time.

If they decide that the CL’s a bogie and they want to concentrate on their domestic stuff, that obviously would be good news for us.

However, it’s mainly up to us. We have matured at lot in Europe since the Sion debacle, and we know there are no easy games in the CL. I expect a strong team (no Vic) tomorrow to keep things ticking until Wednesday.

I believe Vic will be strutting his stuff in the last 16.

    ;o)

  13. I hope we don’t have Charlie and Joe together in midfield. I don’t think this works. It was OK against Barca for a backs-to-the-wall job, but we need some creativity against Spartak. I’d like to see a 4-3-3 with two wide players who can come back and make it a 4-5-1. Lassad/Dylan on the right, Sami on the left.

  14. The game against Spartak in Glasgow is going to be different one, not similar to any other Celtic games in group G.

Agree with Paul, Spartak is going to be rather Inverness with better players.

  15. “The UN voted overwhelmingly to recognise Palestine as the world’s 194th state.”

However, The ConDemNation i.e. The UKplc , headed up by the odious creep, Hague, sat with splinters in its a*** from fence-sitting while they abstained from the vote.

Craven cowards, pandering to the excessive Zionist pressure.

At least the beleaguered Palestinians are getting recognition.

    …………………………………

ASOD is right to be optimistic, things are on the up and up in our wee country.

In 1936 the Celtic reserve goalkeeper James “John” Foley was subject to sustained and vitriolic racist and sectarian abuse from the home fans at Tynecastle. He reacted by kicking the ball against the wall behind his goal which provoked a crowd invasion during which Foley was head-butted and punched.

Despite the best efforts of a King’s Counsel Foley was sentenced by an Edinburgh magistrate to be fined £2 or 20 days imprisonment!

So the fact that Lenny wasn’t charged (despite some media commentators quoting his defence as attack) shows that Salmonland is an improvement on the old Scotland.

Up over goal, I totally disagree with your analysis and in fact thought Kayal had a splendid game against Hearts and will fill in well for Big Vic against Spartak. Thats all from corkcelt for the morning at least.

I can’t disagree with most or any of that, but the Barcelona game is putting a sheen on a team with many deficiencies. I’ve said it many a time – with 3 CMs in front protecting them, Ambrose and Wilson have a better game (despite the latter’s goofy mistakes on Wed). In a 4-4-2 their record is not great, although we cantake some comfort that in Europe, leaving aside Benfica, it’s been better.

Look, I said that post was negative. The positives were for me that Celtic showed their front men can create and take chances.

However, Sammi and Hooper are not in the best of form, our midfield (and I agree with you it will be 4-4-2/4-4-1-1) lacks pace in the wide areas. An outside bet would be Neil playing 3 in the middle and going all-out attack.

That team you mentioned – way too slow going forward. Izzy and Mulgrew are a a very iffy pairing down the left (I’d like to think he’d go with Sammi or Commons at LM). Hooper and Sammi – we’ve had so many examples of it not working. Faced with that versus a 4-3-3/4-3-1-2 with Commons (or even Hooper) in the hole, I’d opt for the latter.

To contradict myself slightly, Joe and Beram actually have quite a good history together at centre mid. My concern is how they’re playing just now. I was really surprised to see Joe playing on Wednesday as he was reported to be touch and go, even for the Spartak game. Here’s hoping his as fit as he can be for Tuesday night.

    Fair enough …..

Re defence …I agree that it is being assisted by playing three in the middle …however I think that is how we should play all the time….IMO we are constantly exposed when we play with two strikers and two wide players
