Iceland calls

Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the Champions League second qualifying round with the first leg taking place on either 15or 16 July.  Celtic are provisionally at home for the first let – but don’t book your flights until arrangements have been confirmed.

KR beat Glentoran 3-0 on aggregate in last season’s Europa League qualifying campaign before losing 1-3 home and away to Standard Liege.  The Icelandic season continues throughout the summer, KR played a league game yesterday and have another three competitive games before meeting Celtic.  Nine games into the league campaign they are three points off the pace.

From what I can tell, it looks like they have a grass pitch at their 3300 capacity stadium, which removes the big complaint from last season’s qualifiers.

This is a good tie for Celtic, who will be physically stretched by a mid-season team, but we’ll be strong favourites.

We were last in competitive action in Iceland against Valur in 1975, when a 0-2 win out there preceded a 7-0 victory at Celtic Park.

Exactly what Celtic are doing – we are likely to be the 1st club in Britain to have a safe standing area once Glasgow City Council get over their jitters. I’m sure you’ll be the first, Kev, to congratulate the Celtic board for their excellent work in this small matter. You’re a rational and level-headed guy.

  2. It was the weekend before black Sunday at Fir Park. Hearts v Celtic at Tynecastle. Celtic went ahead and Hearts equalized with about 12 minutes to go. Craig Beattie put Celtic 2-1 ahead on about 88 minutes. In the dying seconds, Hearts got a corner and Gordon came up for it.

I don’t have a problem with that. He was trying to avoid defeat for his team.

  3. As I remember the CG coming up for a corner was a league game, second or third last of the season, at Tynecastle during the Bellamy season. We were 2-1 up, Beattie scored one of ours, Hartley for them I think, and he came up for an injury time corner.

Does anyone have any insight as to why Celtic were refused permission to proceed with a standing area?

    Are GCC stalling?

I am sure that the club’s submission would have been comprehensive, citing examples and experiences of grounds on the continent where standing areas operate.

Surely we were not refused for political football reasons.

For clubs, there are no meaningless league games.

Every point means prize money to the club and, perhaps, bonus for the team.

Maybe Hearts were desperate for cash.

  7. One of them celtic facebook pages has ronnie as saying he doesnt think we will have any new faces b4 qualifier but could be battle to keep what we have .

Sounds like we cant buy until we know what comp were in but we can still sell.

Wonder if keano was told u have to make the group stages with what we have.. Maybe minus forster or virgil thou. Another failure wouldnt do keanos cv much good so probably worth turning down the job.

Going by what I read,I think they just want some more info.I can understand this. Can you imagine if,god forbid anything happened?.This is the age of compensation.Every T will be crossed, and every I dotted.I think Celtic will get it.They seem quite confident.

I don;t think GCC are stalling – I think they’re doing their job. They’re about to hand out permission for Britain’s first standing area in a football ground and they want to make sure there is no possibility of the kind of horrific scenes that were possible in the past when there was no assessment and no control. Frustrating, yes. But better we get it right and that no-one gets injured or worse.

  16. Finished the secret footballer and moved on to the 2nd of his books. He mentions a move to Scotland and he spoke to a former Celtic player about it.

The player describes the pressure on and off the park. The impatience of the fans at games at home and the demand to win every match.

A very interesting take on why we may be linked with a player from down south and the deal falls through.

In all honesty I reckon some players look at it and think it is not worth the hassle. Also IF they fail to do well they are tarnished as the Scottish league is looked down on.

When we are linked with a player down south and it dosn’t happen this may be the main reason for a transfer falling through. It is not worth the hassle for these guys. They are millionaires. They speak to a former team mate or a player they may know through a mutual friend or agent and they will tell them straight. In fairness the player in question said it was harder than playing in England. The pressure is immense.

In those days ( currently known as ” back in the day”) goalies would take a goal kick and direct it to a full back often near the corner flag, who would return it to the goalie who was then able to punt it ( “blooter it ” ) from the edge of the box up the park, thereby gaining more distance.

On this occasion, big Frank hit it across his own goal but managed to direct it into his own net.

There followed a stunned disbelieving silence from the punters round me.
