Iceland calls

Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the Champions League second qualifying round with the first leg taking place on either 15or 16 July.  Celtic are provisionally at home for the first let – but don’t book your flights until arrangements have been confirmed.

KR beat Glentoran 3-0 on aggregate in last season’s Europa League qualifying campaign before losing 1-3 home and away to Standard Liege.  The Icelandic season continues throughout the summer, KR played a league game yesterday and have another three competitive games before meeting Celtic.  Nine games into the league campaign they are three points off the pace.

From what I can tell, it looks like they have a grass pitch at their 3300 capacity stadium, which removes the big complaint from last season’s qualifiers.

This is a good tie for Celtic, who will be physically stretched by a mid-season team, but we’ll be strong favourites.

We were last in competitive action in Iceland against Valur in 1975, when a 0-2 win out there preceded a 7-0 victory at Celtic Park.

I was going to call into question the ‘elbows’ part and its significance in getting from box to box.

Then I remembered that I’d seen you run :-)

I envy folk whose main issue and daily focus is divining the motivation of a goalkeeper in a match played 10 years ago.

It must be a peaceful, if somewhat under-stimulating life.

Thanks for confirming that the Gordon incident had happened at Tynecastle.

I don’t remember him doing it on any other occasion and believe that he did it for one reason only, to stop Celtic winning the title.

It was a long time ago I’m not sure that it should prevent him from signing for us now.

However, the fact that he’s not played for two years and hasn’t been offered a contract at any of the clubs that he’s been with recently, should.

    ————————————————————————————-

As I said earlier – I think his physical condition (or otherwise) is the main cause for concern rather than what team he supports. However, I have faith in our medical staff to make a proper assessment. Any issues will be assessed and reflected in any deal offered.

Still really struggling with it, I think I must have at least cracked one of them.

I’ve tried to give some inside info from guys who actually know him but it is being ignored. I worked with these fellas who were at school with him at the time and they were clear that he wouldn’t care who won the league as he was a big Jambo.

I think a few Bhoys on here are of the aye but who do you really support mob when anyone does not support Celtic or Rangers.

In my experience die hard Jambos hate both Celtic & Rangers and only care about Hearts. Over the last 4-5 years it has got nastier towards Celtic. No doubt about it.

They have always had a loyalist following from the east. Craig Gordon comes into the first category rather than the latter. Te guy is not a ned or radge to use the local slang. He is an educated lad who loves his team which is Hearts.

I think I’m right in saying that we lost the league at Fir Park the following week, which for many fans was the most crushing defeat they had experienced.

I think that’s part of the reason the Gordon corner incident the previous week is etched on the memory.

Perhaps not very rational, but there’s nothing rational about spending time and money watching 22 men kick a bag of air around a bit of grass.

  18. You read some odd things on CQN these days……

Craig Gordon is a bad person because he tried to get a result for the team he was playing for……..

    Oh dear.

    Different thing.

We blew the league at Motherwell and at home against Hibernian that season. We lost 3-1 to an average side. Nobody seemed bothered because we wouldn’t throw it away I couldn;t believe the crowd reaction that day. It was almost like we had won it already.

Motherwell was very poor. We simply ran out of steam and the goals were coming.

I was at all 3 matches and by far the worst perfomance was against Hibs.
