Iceland calls

Celtic will play KR Reykjavik in the Champions League second qualifying round with the first leg taking place on either 15or 16 July.  Celtic are provisionally at home for the first let – but don’t book your flights until arrangements have been confirmed.

KR beat Glentoran 3-0 on aggregate in last season’s Europa League qualifying campaign before losing 1-3 home and away to Standard Liege.  The Icelandic season continues throughout the summer, KR played a league game yesterday and have another three competitive games before meeting Celtic.  Nine games into the league campaign they are three points off the pace.

From what I can tell, it looks like they have a grass pitch at their 3300 capacity stadium, which removes the big complaint from last season’s qualifiers.

This is a good tie for Celtic, who will be physically stretched by a mid-season team, but we’ll be strong favourites.

We were last in competitive action in Iceland against Valur in 1975, when a 0-2 win out there preceded a 7-0 victory at Celtic Park.

I think the game is just as physical down south. Players accept it is part and parcel of the game.

As for the authorities. The smaller clubs in the EPL face the same problem when playing the big teams.

The secret footballer is an interesting read. Especially around drugs. Drug taking happens. It is swept under the carpet by the club and the FA. The player will be out for a period of time agreed by the club and the FA. The official line will be a virus. Privately the club will fine the player and he must eneter some kind of rehab. I suspect this is why some players sort of disapear for a while for no apparent reason. We all suspect players at various times of this and there are of course the rumours about it. Only Mutu has been hung out to dry so to speak in the football world but in the game the players know when it happens.

Also said how fantastic the fans and the club were , and that it was his first time in South America and he had really enjoyed the experience .

CG played for another team against Celtic , we have no control over what he or any other player does when playing against Celtic – nor should we.

Next we will be asking teams not to score against us incase it hurts our feelings .

Unless players /teams are cheating to beat Celtic ( wonder who that could be ) then I don’t see the problem .

  24. I worked with a few guys years ago who went to school with Craig Gordon. A very quiet fella who was focused on his studies and football. Was not in a bad crowd and was very well brought up. I think his folks are fairly comfortable money wise. He lived in Balerno which is pretty affluent. Just to the west of Edinburgh and pretty much a Jambo stronghold fotball wise. The punters of Balerno and Currie are more likely to be at Murrayfield for the rugby than they are at the football though.

Craig Gordon is a Jambo. No doubt about it. Always was always will be. In truth nobody knows why he went up for that corner. Maybe the manager told him to. Maybe he just fancied it as it was the end of the season and he was on his way out of Hearts. As a die hard Jambo it would have been some story for him to score in his final home match. What is clear and I know this from speaking to guys who knew him is that it mattered little to him who won the league. He only cared about Hearts.

In my honest opinion I never rated him that highly. He was a good goalkeeper and was a very good shot stopper but was not worth £9m and never will be.

Is he fully fit? Does he have to be?

I remember watching a wee fat goalie struggle to walk with bandags round his knees defy belief with some of the saves he pulled off against Celtic.

If Craig Gordon is 70-100% fit then he is worth a deal on a pay as you play deal as back up to Forster.

Craig Gordon like most footballer will do as he is told at the clb they are at. Whether you like him or not he will be fully comitted to Celtic. It’s about money nothing else. I did not want Steven Pressley in the Hoops but the big man behaved like the pro he was. Done the business and gave his all every match. He was not the greatest player in the world but on and off the pitch he done what was asked by the club. Craig Gordon if signed will do the same.

If the guy is signed he will be a Celtic player and I will gve him full backing.
