If this is the acceptable standard, SFA are welcome to it

Our man on the inside, Charlie Green, seems to have upset a few people over the weekend.  Charlie was playing to the gallery with his “bigotry” comment; it is not credible that the 35 clubs who voted against providing Sevco access to an elevated league are demographic significantly different from those of Rangers (1872/3).  Although, there is a good chance that each of those 35 clubs will have a more mixed profile than the former club.

Green is still fending off interest from people with far greater pull with the Rangers (1872/3) support than he has (genuinely hope he succeeds here).  He needs to sell tens of thousands of tickets to prevent his new club slipping into the hands of one of the other consortiums still trying to buy a piece of the action.  I always caution Celtic from playing to the gallery, it delivers short term populism but is surely the alternative to a strategic plan. I am sure several clubs will express their alarm at these comments to the SFA.

Unfortunately, since the SFA failed to take action on either of Ally McCoist’s earlier inflammatory outbursts so they can expect more of the same from Green and others.

Attempts are being made to convince thousands of people a bigoted bogeyman has been out to get them.  99% of the target population will do no more than complain loudly but it’s the unpredictable >1% who exist in every community we should be concerned about.

To the best of my knowledge no Scottish club has ever accused others of bigotry, not even during ‘that’ 80 year period.  If this is the new acceptable standard, the SFA are welcome to it, but it will be better for all if we go elsewhere to play our football.  Our game has been potent for a century but it has now become dangerously unstable.

Let us go now, before this is whipped up any more.  Anyone wanting to hold Scottish football together in its current form has a lot of explaining to do.

  1. I hate Murderwell and their fans, but… I hope they get a good result tomorrow night for the sake of Scottish Football.

Motherwell manager Stuart McCall is missing just Steven Saunders (knee) for the Champions League third qualifying round clash against Panathinaikos.

Fellow defenders Shaun Hutchinson and Jonathan Page have shaken off injuries but are short of match fitness.

Former Bradford defender Simon Ramsden is set for his competitive debut after signing last week.

Midfielder Keith Lasley will captain the side on their first foray into Europe’s top tournament.

Ramsden is the only new arrival at Fir Park, while Tim Clancy and Steve Jennings have moved on and Stephen Craigan has retired.

Panathinaikos are a shadow of the side that reached the last 16 of the Champions League as recently as 2009, having flirted with bankruptcy last year.

But the Greeks have added a few new faces, including Senegalese defensive midfielder Pape Habib Sow, defenders Andre Almeida Pinto and Jose Manuel Velazquez and Uruguayan striker Bruno Fornaroli.

The visitors also have former Rangers defender Jean-Alain Boumsong in their ranks.

has anyone asked uefa about greene’s comment that during his meeting with uefa, they said what he was tryting to do was unprecedented, if they did say such a thing were they supporting his attempt

  3. Dodged a bullet with this guy as well.

  10. if i were the celtic board i would say nothing about sevco fc, as they are nothing just another 3rd division team. we will all see where celtic stand when it gets promoted to the spl, will they hold firm and say nothing or get into bed with them.

p.s. told CG in the paper preclaiming that his club will be in better financial shape than any other club in scotland this time next year and it makes me sick, the dead club walked away from 134 million pounds of debt and now rubs salt into the wounds of small, medium and large businesses / creditors throughout scotland. so is he advocating that clubs like killie, aberdeen and hearts follow suit to clear their debt? and start a newco because everything will stay the same outwith debt?

no CG these clubs want to keep their history anybody who believes rangers and newco are one in the same are stupid

Over the years I have been overly obsessed with the cheats who portray themselfs as referees.

Must admit it’s quite an unhealthy passtime, but for some reason they make my blood boil :>)

The euros this year had a superb standard of refereeing, was a joy to watch footballes playing the beautifull game without getting kicked all over the pitch.

Then we see Celtic subjected to scottish referees in 2 pre season games, same old, going to be a busy season for the club doctor and physios.

This is where I want PL to earn his bonus, sort them out, can’t be too difficult to make them accountable, or is the will not there???

  17. With the demise of the football club formerly known as Glasgow Rangers FC, the other SPL clubs will lose a portion of their gate receipts in the coming season(s). So I did some back of an envelope number crunching (for the benefit of Charlie Boy Green), albeit somewhat rough and ready… but still more thorough than any GRFC accounts since 2010.

The purpose of this was to determine what will be required to offset the drop in attendances at the other SPL grounds, now that their occasional visit(s) from the peepil won’t be happening.

Last season a total of 276,956 attended the SPL away games of GRFC. This season GRFC will contribute nothing to the SPL gates of other clubs.

The biggest losers will be St. Johnstone, who were “blessed” with three home games against GRFC. Least affected will be Hibs, St. Mirren, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, who each faced GRFC at home just once.

I looked at how much the other teams’ home gates would need to increase to make up the shortfall incurred by doing without the visits of GRFC’s delightful follow followers, then I added back in the appropriate number of average crowds against the other teams (excluding Celtic) and my findings can be seen below:

Celtic are around the middle in terms of percentage increase required in the average (not v GRFC) home attendance, with an increase of 12.3% required to ensure the same number of fans pass through the turnstiles over the course of the SPL season. However, this does amount to the largest actual count of bums on seats, with an additional 6,169 tickets needing to be sold for each and every game.

St. Johnstone will need to put around 30% more bums on seats, amounting to just over 1,000 extra attendees. Motherwell & Dundee Utd will also need around 1,000 extra through the turnstiles at every home game. Hearts will need to find an extra 1,600 each game, but I imagine there will be a few Edinburgh based defectors from GRFC, which should help them towards this target.

Other teams with lesser requirements are St. Mirren (400), Kilmarnock (500), Hibs (600), Inverness (700) and Aberdeen (just over 800), with (of these) only Inverness needing more than a 10% increase.

These figures assume that the attendances at games against Dundee and Ross County will be similar to the average crowds against all bar Celtic and GRFC last season.

So, while these increases will be challenging to the clubs, it is not quite the doomsday scenario that Charlie Boy Green is attempting to paint. With a little clever marketing I am sure many of the SPL clubs can lift their attendance figures and grow their matchday income beyond the basic ticket price. And with several of the “provincial” clubs now likely to be competing for possible European qualification, and perhaps even in the running for the SPL title (at least for a way into the season), I would expect to see their crowds on the up in any case.

The future’s bright, without Green & Whyte.

  18. If Sky have offered £3m per season, the clubs would make more money from having no live fitba and getting more people going to the games. Sell a good highlight package(s) to BBC, STV, 5 and give the game back to the fans.

  19. If Celtic got to play in engerland-expect the next move to be the sfa trying to use that to alienate us even more+i think Celtic Park would be a big target for the destructive element-these morons would probably attack away english fans to make it as problematic as possible-morons are predictable in their limited base behaviours-

we are stuck in Scotland-might as well go for the cleansing of officialdom-CQN,RTC

Alex Thomson-great agents to start with-HMRC-hopefully clean the parts we cant reach-what weve realised these last 6months is real people power-there is hope

    TET,

For what it’s worth I think you are absolutely on the money wrt refereeing decisions/standards that we have to put up with on a weekly basis.

Only have to go back to the short-lived referee’s ‘strike action’ (sic) and the effect of the pro-tem refs brought in to ensure the SPL games went ahead. The difference in keeping the game flowing was palpable……….

    Keep it lit pal.

  21. This kicking out racism doesn’t seem to be working…

Michel Morganella has had a miserable Monday.

The Swiss right back was on the losing end of a 2-1 defeat to South Korea at the Olympics on Sunday, and following the loss the Palermo defender had a meltdown on Twitter.

The 23-year-old felt provoked after receiving a torrent of abuse throughout the match against the Asians. Morganella was booed throughout the match against the Koreans after he picked up an “injury” in a phantom challenge with Arsenal forward Park Chu Young.

After getting riled on the pitch, Morganella let rip on Twitter: I want to beat up all South Koreans! Bunch of mentally handicapped retards! (“Je les tous Defonce Coréens, allez vous tous Bruler, bande de trisos”)

Unsurprisingly there was a big backlash to Morganella’s comments on the micro-blogging site, which many accusing the footballer of xenophobia and even racism.

After publicly apologising on Twitter for his original comment, the defender has since had his Twitter account suspended. Moreover, calls are growing for the footballer to be kicked out of London 2012.

    I have a question….

In season 2002/03, the rights to screen live SPL matches was held by BBC. They also had a deal to show Celtic matches against that team that used to play in Govan to the rest of the UK, four times a season.

Does anyone know how much the SPL received per season and how it compared with the previous Sky deals?

  29. Would anyone know how much Celtic make from the sale of a home or away shirt (ie the profit to Celtic of one shirt bought from a Celtic FC outlet)?

Do we actually make money from their sale on top of what Nike pays us for the rights to make them?

Also does anyone have figures on how much Celtic make from Celtic TV?

What are our non ticket and TV revenues like? How much do we make from merchandising etc?

And Auldheid – any progress on membership since we last communicated on that?

I’ve a rudimentary wage calculator on a spreadsheet that indicates the average weekly wage based on SB sales.

On a gate of 22,000 it is £1433 pw on a squad of 50 including coaches.

On a gate of 5,000 the average is £568 pw Both are way above what SFL 3 clubs are paying, but significantly less than what Sevco are rumoured to be paying the players who turned out yesterday.

Their business case really has to be scrutinised by the SFA before a licence is issued and that case, or at least the broad figures should be placed in the public domain so that supporters can see for themselves that the SFA are taking all necessary steps to minimise risk of Sevco going belly up by Christmas.

Of course if the business case shows a player wage in the latter range this would of itself affect gates and so income. No wonder its all so secretive, I mean presenting an honest picture, that would never do.
