If you think Leigh’s finished, you’ve not been paying attention

It was only a friendly and he took advantage of an error, but Patryk Klimala’s goal against Nice last night got rid of the onerous burden that comes when every striker joins a new club, he is no longer waiting on his first goal.

Patryk is still only 21, living abroad for the first time and has a whole lot of work ahead, but in these respects he is no different than several strikers who have successfully developed into top talents at Celtic in recent seasons.  We know how to transform prospects into champions, if you want to make it as a striker, this is the place to come.

I know that you and me both have a lot of time for Leigh Griffiths.  He has proven his worth repeatedly in the six years since he arrived at Celtic Park, most notably by scoring 40 goals in season 2015-16.  Since then, he has played more of a supporting role, first to Moussa Dembele and then Odsonne Edouard and he returned from off-field challenges before lockdown with an impressive scoring rate.

High standards, which would have been unrecognisable as recently as Martin O’Neill’s time, have been set at Celtic in recent years.  They have contributed to the club being the most prodigious collector of trophies in Scottish football history.  Neil Lennon is the curator of those standards and he knows more than anyone the cost if he lets them slip.

Leigh has a master’s degree in the science of ‘Prove them Wrong’.  He has been written off and returned to the top more than anyone I can remember, whatever weaknesses he has, this determination to recover is a strength many overlook.

If you think he’s finished, you’ve not been paying attention.

Thank You Leigh for tying a Celtic Scarf to the corner flag at Ibrox Park after you had smashed in another goal against them, something I would love to have done myself (!), but most likely would have cost me a night in the pokey. Good man, always be thankful for that. Now get well soon and prove them all wrong again.

But Record Sport has discovered Kent won’t face any further disciplinary action with the French Football Federation admitting they have no jurisdiction over the competition.

Tournament organisers Lyon also confirmed the 23-year-old is available for tomorrow’s clash with Nice with no further action expected.

You missed this important part, pre season champions again

Rangers now go into tonight’s clash with Nice knowing a victory will land them the trophy after Patrick Viera’s side opened with a 1-1 draw against Celtic.

  9. I think Neil Lennon’s comments on Griffiths do not point to mental health issues.

I read it to mean Griffiths had not applied himself the way the other senior professional athletes at the club had.

    Am I wrong?

If he is still suffering from depression, I would expect the manager to be more protective.

  11. From Celtic

CELTIC have expressed the hope that Scottish football will not be left behind as grounds re-open to supporters around Europe.

Following the indication of ‘pilot’ games with spectators in the rest of the UK from next month, Celtic believe that the same approach can safely be adopted in Scotland.

Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “We have discussed the idea of ‘pilot’ games with the Scottish Government and believe it provides a safe, sensible way forward. As a club, we have put enormous thought and effort into making Celtic Park fully compliant with all public health-related requirements while allowing our supporters to return to watching football.

“It is acknowledged that Scottish football has been exemplary in implementing all the safeguards required of it, first to get back into training and, from August 1st, to playing competitive SPFL matches.

“We are convinced that this should now be accompanied by a phased return of spectators which would be good, not only for the game of football but also for public health and morale in Scotland more generally.

“Scottish clubs are much more dependent on matchday revenues than other, larger leagues. That factor should be taken account of, so long as the public health obligations are met, to which we are entirely committed.

“We also have an obligation to our own supporters to make the case for them to be allowed to watch live football, particularly when they can see the steady progress towards this in other European leagues.

“Alongside other sporting bodies, Celtic will continue to engage in constructive dialogue with the Scottish Government and look forward to early progress.”

Celtic have worked hard to win every title over the past 9 seasons and will need to do so again. No one handed Celtic the title to us at any point in our history

    ……

Griff is a talented football who suffers from mental health issues. Keep supporting him, these last few months have been hard for most of us, add depression into the mix and it’s a whole lot harder

    …….

We need another keeper and left sided centreback.

mental health is strongly associated with lapse and relapse it varies and can be influenced by social circumstances and can last a lifetime, depression and suicide is very prevalent in men 40 uears old and under. I cant say he differently has mental health problems right now, but by the same token no one but Leigh can, and even then it’s not always as clear cut as that.

My point is we should support him because these are exceptional times and lots of people have found the look down and restrictions difficult. He will benefit from support, help and a kick up the ass might just help get him there.

Read the boys quote he wont give up and neither should we.

You know that Griifiths has mental health issues today?

    Hi Philbhoy,

He is the same ego (self) as he always has had.

If only detecting mental issues was tangible, something that showed up visibly so that we would know he was maybe dipping or racing in terms of his mental health alas that is physical illness where I know you have a cold as you have a head like an askit misery or a broken arm cause of the stooki I see.

I just found your wee question interesting as sometimes those affected by mental health are at times/if at all the last to have insight into how they themselves are doing.ie they think they are fine and handling things but they may not be,

In regards Leigh I would offer more patience and more support. We are contracted and I hope Celtic carry on as they have done, supporting Leigh, who will have to cope/manage this for a wee while longer than the duration of his contract.

i hope we get back to the leigh/Celtic synergy

    He is one of us.

  23. STEPHBHOY^&

I suffered from depression for years culminating in a failed attempt at suicide so I am well familiar with how the the illness affected and impacted on my family and me.

I have had no relapse since 2012 and feel good about myself and my future. i am not recieving any treatment and haven’t since 2012.

I sincerely hope Griffiths is not having a relapse, I really do.

However, as I said earlier, I thought Neil Lennon’s comments did not suggest a recurrence of the illness but a failure on the footballers part to keep fit and within weight parameters for his height etc, which all other senior players managed.

The Griff has given me some fantastic Celtic highlights in his Celtic career and I would love to see him continue.

If he has mental health issues the club and supporters should support him all the way.

If he has just been lazy, well some earlier posts reminded us of what can happen if you go down that road.

I do hope to see him in the Hoops again and doing what he’s good at.

CELTIC Look To Move Forward With Hotel And Museum Plan

CELTIC Football Club is set to move to the next stage of realising its vision for a hotel and museum development at Celtic Park.

The club was given outline planning permission for the concept nearly three years ago but still needs to submit detailed plans for approval.

Documents submitted to planners this month regarding the retail element of the project reveal that Celtic is working towards lodging its final proposals and designs.

Celtic have had to apply to sort out one of the planning conditions attached as part of Glasgow City Council’s decision to grant planning permission in principle in September 2017.

The overall development includes a hotel with between 175 and 200 bedrooms, a Celtic museum, shop and ticket office.
