Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Thanks re your comments re the Statement which was followed a week later by the semi final.

It was clear after the latter that we were right in what we said in the former. Despite the self interest from the media and the desperation in their support in trying to hang onto our coat-tails – the OF is finished. They are finished.

We have more to say on the matter – as previously stated and will do so before the end of the season.

Can I just thank all those who got in touch with me re raffle and auction prizes for St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge.

I am very grateful to you all.

Can I just say something about the Packie Bonnar/Joe Miller chat.

Over 5 decades now I have stood on the terracing and sat in the stands at Celtic park cheering on whatever 11 have worn those green and white hoops plus a goalie’s jumper.

Some teams were better than others, some players were better than others and some results were better than others.

However, I was always a fan – a guy that paid his money for the privilege to support, to experience the joy of victory and yes, on occasion, the despair of defeat.

However, the guys on the pitch are not football fans, they are professional sportsmen – and there is a big difference between the professional sportsman and the fan.

As I have said, the fan goes to support, but the professional sportsman goes to win and to experience that which the fan will never experience, namely to take to the field and beat whoever the opposition may be.

I have spoken to all sorts of Celtic players over the last few years and virtually all of them come out and say that they want to play Rangers because they recall the experience of beating Rangers and the joy that such a result brings.

Yes, I know that certain Radio and TV stations warn ex players away from the topic of Rangers current status, the old club/new club debate, and basically anything which would confirm that Rangers are not the Rangers of old.

The same players will tell you they abide by the broadcasters rules despite the fact that they all know what happened to Rangers 1872 and that legally the club is dead, buried and put to bed.

However, to a man they have all said that they loved playing Rangers and beating them. That is all the clearer when the players were at one time fans like me who stood in the terracings.

I don’t miss playing Rangers personally, but I understand the ex players who just love reliving the memory of being victorious and securing a win in front of all those baying fans wearing green and white.

From the comfort of my living room I have no time for the notion of playing the Ibrox cub.

However, if I were the kind of guy who got lucky and was able to wear the strip while beating them I just may have a different feeling altogether.

I do wish the broadcasters would play the game though and just let their panellists say whatever they want to say.

I am no fan of censorship or undue influence.

  5. Raspberry

A really poor decision I think mate. A lot of Celtic supporters don’t use the internet and will have difficulties establishing whether they have a ticket or not.

Agreed ex players are totally different to fans in their outlook on all this and indeed to football matters in general. . the only ex players that ever annoyed me with what they said were viduka and burley

  10. BRTH,

Usually I have great respect for your views but I think you excuse those ex-players who not only ignore the truth about the deid team from Govan but whose criticism of Celtic is way over the top just so they can have a career in the Scottish sports media. Not for me.

I agree its not ideal and I’m sure they’re not saving that much money not using the post but the suggestion that the only way of finding out is online is wrong.

I didn’t say it was the only way of finding out but I did say it makes it more difficult.

I understand Celtic’s thinking behind it but I don’t think a cup final is the best game to trial it.

Can I just point out there is no excuse for “having a go” at Celtic when you are in the media and to be honest, no matter what strip you wore at any time, if you do have a go just to further your media career then you deserve to be scraped off the bottom of the shoe just like any other turd!

There is a difference between that behaviour and saying you would welcome playing Rangers or that on a certain day this player or that didn’t play as well as they could or that the team did not perform as expected.

If honest criticism or comment is based on events on the pitch that is one thing, but just having a go to further your own ends ranks lower than a dachshund’s testicles.

  19. HT – I agree. Sorry I hope I didn’t give the impression I was singling you out. Not my intention.

What have Man Utd become, dire dire to watch

    ………

A horrible club with even more horrible fans who should have been banned in years past for refusing to take part in the FA Cup.

*Fully concur with you there, they should have been sine died as they devalued a wonderful tournament.

I used tae love the FA Cup and all the romance that went with it. Giant killers such as Yeovil, York, Bishop Auckland, Hereford etc.

Bert Trautman breaking his neck and playing on, the Munich survivors complete with 3 amateurs making it to the Final only tae be bundled out by the “Lion of Vienna”, Bolton became the most hated team in the country that day.

That’s what made the tournament so special and then the govan gub completely ruined it.

As for your comment re Thursday I’m with you there tae, we have 5 games prior to the Arab Trilogy, which I believe we will win all 3, but for me the most important occurs on March 1 against the Ovis Aries.

I liken this campaign to Jock’s first season, while it would have been nice to do the quadruple; the League was the primary target.

I was working up in Wester Duntiglennan with a group of fellow Tim apprentices; one in particular could only talk about May 6 as that was the date of the ECWC Final at Hampden, for me I was more interested in May 19 as that was when Mr. Zimmerman was coming to town.

The treble will do for me this year and then 67 revisited next.

    We’re a pair of grumpy gits :)

I don’t like falling out with my own people. I don’t like falling out with anyone. (Except Chris Graham. I used to enjoy winding him up until the sod blocked me!)

What a diabolical decision by the ref just then to award that goal for Man Utd … I know, unrelated …

  22. Geordie Munroe – don’t think so. Ball bounces in front of Rooney so he’s not obstructing the line of sight and he doesn’t touch it. Keeper should have levelled him.
