Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

If Sanchez Broto had been in goal in Seville we would have won.

    Possibly on penalties!

“And to let any version of Rangers get in the way of your own relationship with our club is just daft”

Not while the version of Rangers is officially recognised as being founded in1872,and credited with all honours won since that date, it isn’t.

    SPFL website you’ll find that.

Those honours include titles and cups cheated from us, along with potential millions in Champions League monies.

Cheating that I paid to watch, in blissful ignorance.

But I’m not so ignorant now, thanks mainly to this site and other sources on the Internet.

So I’ll not be daft enough to pay any money into supporting this now officially blessed Big Lie, on which our game is now founded.

That in itself affects my relationship with the club I first saw play against St. Johnstone in 1966. 6-1 victory, with Joe McBride playing too.

They will be taking part in a rigged competition, bereft of honesty, fair play, and sporting integrity, and I’ll want nothing to do with it.

I can stomach the stench of corruption just now, while we’re at least in a different division, although, as we’re still part of the SPFL, I accept that dilutes my stance somewhat. But I’ll cling on, while there’s some distance left between us and Sevco.

Remember, the only reason Sevco didn’t start off in the top league was the threat by supporters of Scottish clubs not to renew or take up season tickets, proving that sporting integrity can be defended, if the will is there.

I’ll always be a Celtic supporter, but won’t support a rigged game.

So that affects my relationship with my club, and I don’t consider I’m being daft to let it.

Hail Hail. Thanks for all your work, and guts, in producing the statement.

  6. What is the Stars,

Had to think about that, but no this will be their first European night game.

All looking forward to it now, even though I am struggling after that boozefest of a weekend.

Can you tell me why you blocked me on Twitter when all I did was politely ask you some questions?

  8. tallybhoy,

I always thought that myself, from memory big Rab D pushed the ball out twice which cost us.

I’ve not watched it since the game, so might be wrong as I was blootered.

Yet, he did play well in earlier rounds. HH

  9. Drinking in football grounds is a no no for me. This is from a punter that used tae have to cover one eye tae see the end of the games and also want tae know if we were still winning. And then I started going off the drink for Lent and started tae enjoy the games more to such an extent that I went tae the gemmes without a kerry oot.

Emigrated and on return the bevvy was banned in the grounds. One particular match was against the deid team on a day when the heavens had opened up at CP. McSleekit put them in the lead and then ran toward the dugout jumping intae the arms of the former Berwick goalie, think he was greetin tae.

Paul McStay equalised for us and that’s how the gemme ended. Although I did see the worse striker ever tae play for the huns, fat boab williamson.

The following Saturday I was sitting in the Goldstone Ground wearing a short sleeve shirt and sunglasses sipping a pint. A young Dean Saunders and Gary O’Reilly were playing for the Seagulls while black north internationals Noel Brotherson and Jimmy Quinn turned out for Blackburn.

Cannae remember the score but if given the choice I would rather have been at Easter Road tae see the bhoys that day. Good weather, good players and a wee drink disnae always make for a good gemme.

I’m donald ducked as to why fans can’t go intae a ground for approx. 2 hours and have tae eat and/or drink.

What have Man Utd become, dire dire to watch

    ………

A horrible club with even more horrible fans who should have been banned in years past for refusing to take part in the FA Cup.

Thought they were above playing us in the Champions League.Tossers who are now in utter desperation to win any kind of trophy.

Your point which “started a lot of nonsense” was answered at the time.

You were told by several posters that the issue was that Celtic FC employees do not have the licence to speak as openly in the media regarding all things regarding Scottish football politics as do retired footballers who are regarded as “pundits” or “”experts”. Furthermore, if they did, they would likely bring considerable hassle to their lives.

It was also suggested to you that some ex-Celtic employees, such as the two you are defending, have persistently referred to Celtic in the same breath as the dead club in an attempt to maintain the O** F*** myth in the face of business law and common sense.

You chose to be obtuse AND deliberately misrepresented what I had said.

I did NOT refer to those two as “soup takers”.

At 16:32 I said that they should be “more savvy” about the attitude of the majority of Celtic supporters (although clearly not yourself) as they had spent so long in the Glasgow goldfish bowl. I put them in a category as “others I could mention APART FROM THE USUAL SOUPTAKERS”

See if you are going to take issue with somebody, at least after the second attempt could you at least comprehend what their argument is?

  13. Hamiltontim:

What you ACTUALLY did was resort to a familiar series of tactics … questioning my loyalty to my football club, my culture and my background … I’m not engaging with that.

I get enough of that kind of personal stuff from the other mob.

I wasnt particularly referring to you as regards the soup taker nonsense

And it is a nonsense term in this context.

“You chose to be obtuse AND deliberately misrepresented what I had said.”

    No I didnt

    Absolute lies.

The evidence is there. I asked you to stop swearing at me and what was your experience of the OBaF Act.

When you refused to answer, and swore at me again, I suggested that you should maybe attend more games to gain a better understanding of how the act is being targeted at Celtic supporters.

    You then blocked me.
