It always stings when we lose a good one

1262

It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations.  We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.

Victor goes with our best wishes.  He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox.  It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling.  There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.

He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on).  This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal.  There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.

If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two.  Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive.  Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap.  Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.

Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right).  Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money.  In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped.  The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….

Easy, right?

Just having a perusal of today’s Evening Times where I have came across an advertisement for the wee red book. It features our own Neil Lennon and the sevco manager ( aka the best young 50 year old manager in the game ). Now Neil is looking his usual fine self but ” Pep” is looking even better as l gazed at him I am thinking Walter has really taken the pressure off “Pep” as he is looking 6 years younger. The thing is he is 6 years younger as he is holding the 2007/2008 wee red book. Is there no lengths they will stop at in the propaganda war . :))

  3. If VideoCelts Weblog is to be believed it looks odds on that Hooper is off as well. I reckon the “injury” is a convenient way of wrapping him in cotton wool until ‘arry ups the ante to 5 million. Its sad to see our two best players leave but I do not blame NL or PL, once Vic refused to sign an improved contract last year and was prepared to leave possibly hundreds of thousands in Celtic’s Bank Account rather then his own, it was game set & match, he was leaving. Its equally obvious Hoops wants to go as well, there is nothing the Club can do about either of them.

  5. Asked for an update following the defeat in

Berlin Lennon admitted: “There has been

interest in Gary from two clubs, QPR and

Norwich, and I think that will rumble on for a

    week or so.

“Can I convince him to stay? It’s a difficult

one. He’s not featured much for us this pre-

season. He’s got a bit of catching up to do

and I don’t know where his mind is at the

    minute.

“I’ve not had the chance to speak to him yet

but it could be difficult for us to keep him.

“Has he played his last game for Celtic? Never

say never, but it’s looking more and more that

    way just now.”

Asked about bringing in any new players

Lennon added: “I’ve not spoken to Peter yet,

we’ve done a lot of work on the Victor deal

and we got there in the end.

“But I’d doubt we would get anyone in before

Wednesday. I’ve no idea how much I will get

from Wanyama. I’ll maybe have a better idea

    next week.”

  6. If Hooper leaves us for a championship club …ill find that quite depressing

Bad enough our best player considers it a career advancement to move to Southampton ….but QPR…FFS

  7. Asonofdan

We’ve done a lot of work on the Wanyama deal ……that’s a shocking statement IMO ….when it’s considered against the other parts of the statement

Tells all….where the priorities lie ..

  8. BT,

That’s unfortunate, hope everything is ok and we can catch up soon.

Hello this is WEE BGFC. I didn’t get the stream to later on in the game and from what I saw we played quite good because we had a lot of good passing moves and we did some good moves.

I didn’t see any of the game so I’m glad to see a wee bit positivity amongst the doom and gloom.

I’m hanging on to my opinion until after the CL qualifier (s)

  11. Pfayr. Surely that can’t be true what Neil says. Must be made up

So he is saying we have spent all our time trying to sell vic. But have spent no time looking for new players. And we might lose our only goal scoring striker and Neil had not spoke to Peter about budget

    Surely made up

That would happen. Or would it. :(

  12. I logged in here after the second Celtic friendly in Germany and all I could read where moaners and dome prophets, and they are still here, I wouldn’t like this mob behind us if we ever hit a crises, someone said it earlier, spoiled brats, Again I will say it, it’s training sessions Ffs lighten up, .

  15. Good morning from a sunny Berlin. It’s hard to tell yourself that these friendly games mean hee haw after a 400km drive with the wife, traipsing half way across Berlin and back, once to get the tickets and once to watch the game, then stand for 2 hours watching that crap with a detrimental effect on my already problematical lower spine and right knee. That does not include the financials involved! Anyway I’m sure it will all be forgotten if we go through the next round of the CL.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY OLD TIM.

  16. PF.

I gave up talking about Celtic on this site years ago..

    Why?

  17. Hooper to QPR?

Sheesh. That would be a complete slap in the face.

Good Morning Guys, Gutted again by last nights lack of anything positive and already there are guys on here this morning defending it. Its poor plain and simple, Apart from Jackson and Rogic there was nothing good about this German tour full stop. All Neil would have learned is outwith his starting 11 he doesn’t have much and even then some of the starting 11 have been poor over the past season and looks to have continued. Getting thumped isn’t good for anyone or anything. So stop defending it.We should be better than that. No other Big team would get slaughtered like that game in game out on tour. Its to raise our profile not waste it and increase fitness not demorilize you mentally.

In terms of experimenting with shape and formation, no matter what Neil did we looked frail and open, He tried formations that have never worked for him yet he tries them again and again, so either he doesn’t have the personnel or the system is flawed and once it’s exposed Neil takes too long to change it by then we’re at least 1 down and chasing it. Nothing is learned it seems and that’s my main worry. I understand he is a young manager and a very strong man and I respect him very much but I believe he lacks tactical knowledge.motivation (in 70% of games) Belief and understanding and flatness all come from mental readiness must come from Neil and it doesn’t watching last night was like watching the team last season and the season before, nothing from the team and Neil waiting on an Individual bit of brilliance to get him the 3 points. I know its only preseason but the signs aren’t good and no one on here can say the past week has filled them with confidence.

  19. tonydonnelly67, I don’t want to reopen debate but the issue is the teams we played in Germany are in exactly the same position as we are. They are also in pre-season, they are also trying to build fitness, they are bedding in new players, they are using their full squads and putting on plenty of subs. If anything we should be ahead of them as we have a Champions League game in a few days time. We are a team with pretensions of getting to Group stages of Champions League, last two teams we played were in the 2nd Division of German League, yet both of them played us off the Park. They looked fitter, better organised, better motivated and better footballers. If you wish to sweep all that under the carpet well O.K. but to me it does matter. Yes I do expect a different attitude & performance once the competitive season starts but if Celtic wish to play like they did on a pre season tour,I wish they did it behind closed doors.

  20. When I played for Eastercraigs nearly 30 years ago old Bill Livingstone ( god rest his soul) said mistakes happen. The problem lies when you don’t learn from them.

    Onwards and upwards. .

  21. I am not defending anything, all I am saying is its a daft friendly, it’s a no game, it’s a work out, a fitness session, trial games, call it what you like we didn’t loss any thing, and if you travel 400 clicks to watch a friendly then that’s your choice it would have been nice for you to have seen a win but that’s what friendliest are, a wee friendly kick about with two teams, the win of the results is not even a stat, they start next week.

  22. kevinlasvegas on

Closed Doors would be a good idea corkcelt, Its not the score for me its the manner and meekness we seem to approach games with, Appetite is non existent. I realize that most you guys vented or defended last night and this is just opening up an old argument. Have a good day gents, if its golf, footie or horsies, enjoy yer weekend and the season will be what it is no matter our opinions.

  23. Morning,

Laptop Loyal will have a few days of giggles and s*** stirring because of our recent fitness exercise.

Once we cross the line for real on Wednesday I have no doubts Celtic will win comfortably.

  24. EC67- another fine tale from the land of Samarasia, I have this mental image of Tom Conti and Pauline Collins in Shirley Valentine, I don’t know where you got your story telling skills, besides I believe you actually swim like a dolphin in pursuit of a shoal of sardines.

You could be back here hacking round the golf course, managed to stay below 100 in the medal last night, but only just.

Still, I avoided our latest pumping against the Union Bears and there’s always the medal today to get the golf right but I ain’t holding my breath.

I’m not too concerned about results of friendlies, but I’m concerned that according to reports on here from those who have seen the friendlies, we seem very fragmented all over the pitch. I understand the personnel will be significantly different midweek, but with no hooper a possibility, vic gone and a few injuries, it will be a challenge to suddenly click against a committed and determined side who will treat this game like a CL final. The mediocrity apparently shown so far had better be left behind or make no mistake, we will be in for a horror result.
