It always stings when we lose a good one

1262

It always stings a bit when we lose a good one, and there appears to be universal agreement that Victor Wanyama is a good one, but there are compensations.  We lost him for the asking price (a club and Scottish record) and lost him early enough in the transfer window for the cash to be put to good use. Technical note, £12.5m and freeing up a very small wage will not provide £12.5m for transfers plus wages for either a £12.5m player or a collection of players at that value. It will free up a lesser transfer budget and provide a higher wage budget.

Victor goes with our best wishes.  He joins a club who signed Celtic fringe player (I’m being generous), Jos Hooiveld, two years ago, and who also employ former Celtic misfit, Danny Fox.  It’s not a sexy move but Victor will be as well compensated as Celtic by England’s bling.  There could be claims about the move being about football, but it’s about the money, honey; not that there’s a problem with that, Victor didn’t pack his bags in Nairobi hoping to end his days in Glasgow.

He only became a first choice player after Beram Kayal was injured so comprehensively by Elbows McCulloch and played less than 30 games and was a first team choice for less than a year before declining a contract extension for a substantial wage increase (several times the wages he was on).  This, when he had almost three years left on his existing deal.  There’s a lesson there for future negotiations.

If you are feeling less than happy about this development, I could suggest a reason or two.  Back in the 70s and 80s Macari, Hay, Dalglish, Nicholas and McClair were sold for competitive fees but the Cavalry of reinforcements didn’t arrive.  Instead Celtic hoped a new generation of youths would fill the gap.  Those of us from that generation were condition by the experience.

Things worked differently when Jock Brown was in charge (aye, you read right).  Within a few months we lost the league for the ninth consecutive season and sold the Three Amigos for a substantial amount of money.  In August 1997 I was distraught but 10 months later the penny dropped.  The challenge now for Peter Lawwell, Neil Lennon and the Celtic scouts is to outperform Jock and Wim………….

Easy, right?

When you say greed whose greed and how much is not being spent on the club?

Ive never worked out how much profit ends up in a shareholders pocket and if the amount earned is not what a shareholder is entitled to expect from their investment given the opportunity to invest the same capital value elsewhere.

It is an area where a bit of transparency might set the record straight.

  2. Totally scunned with the negativity on this board. Scunnered by people saying NL will get no funds ….how in God’s name do they know that? l can’t write here he will get every penny for simple reason that l don’t know.

Almost 10 years ago l came on to this site and gave Paul 67 a hard time for what he was writing so much so he agreed to meet me to discuss things. I listened, looked and learned from what he had to say then and what he has had to say over the years. I don’t always agree with him and he doesn’t always agree with me. I know now he has more information and insight than anyone who writes here about what is going on at our club.

Sure l stil get annoyed, curse and swear at games and kick the couch and shout at the tele at times in sheer frustration. But what l do know is my position has shifted from the dark days when some Celtic fans booed McCann and Quinn.

However, it seems as though for some it has been a waste of Paul67s time.

Nothing is perfect. All l know is we are in a far better place than what we could have been.

Last year we had people on here saying we would never get through the qualifiers to get into the Europa Cup let alone the CL. Look what happened. Look what’s happening now the same people are saying similar things.

Relax and enjoy the show bhoys. If it does turn to crap you can enjoy telling us all on here that you were right. Perhaps!

Soon l am going into hospital and will be not able to get to games for about 6 months. Going through that will be less painful than read some of the comments here.

As a youngster l listened to people call Johnstone and Dalglish for everything. So l know in my heart of hearts that l have just wasted my time in writing this and you have wasted yors reading it.

    Some folks are never happy.

  4. I wouldn’t waste a wage on Moulokolo as I don’t think he’s better than what we have.

Tin hat time, but I would also look to sell Scott Brown. I appreciate he’s our captain and come on to a game in the past two seasons but he has a chronic injury that could well get worse. Why pay a high wage to a player, admittedly a good one, who misses a lot of games?

I would like the legacy of no Huns to be us producing and playing our own young players.

Yer cognitive dissonance glows like the North Star.

So ignore corruption because we might get a hard time off an already proven corrupt meeja, what you are saying actually depresses me more then the shareholders on the boards actions.

Suffer in silence, it’s the Celtic way doncha know, not in my name. BULLSHIT AND COWARDLY

  7. Summi. They have known for weeks vic was off and knew how much money they would get for him. Players should have been identified and medicals booked. To say he might know next week is tosh. U know that and I know that

  8. Team for Wednesday, given current injury ‘crisis’

    Forster

    Lustig Wilson Mulgrew Izzaguirre

    Forrest Stokes Samaras

Subs Zaluska Kayal Balde Commons Henderson Atajic McGeouch

Should be enough to win against Cliftonville.

  9. How can we spend a week getting rid of a player?

We accept a bid, end of..

unless PL bonus is at stake.

  10. I think we need to calm down bhoys and ghirls.

The players have only had a 3 week break this year. We need the team to peak quite early in the season because the CL group stage is so vital. Thus the team has to maintain this level until early December. Other athletes plan their programmes to peak for a certain Games or tournament. Its not all about physical fitness. Playing for Celtic is demanding emotionally and psychologically. Just read the posts to see how demanding we are. I’m sure the qualifiers will be negotiated safely, although in the play off round we could draw a right hard one. My message is, “Don’t panic”

  11. it’s the middle of July and we’ve already signed two players. That doesn’t sound like a club sitting back and doing nothing to me.

It’s not always easy to get players in until near to the end of the window. Clubs play games, not always accepting the first offer or using it to smoke others out. Players and agents do the same, waiting in hope of a more attractive offer.

  12. Auldheid,

100% on that, what I find a bit confusing is that the shareholders on the board obviously think their vision of our future is the right one, but seem to be afraid to share their vision, we honestly have no idea what they have planned, you’d think if their vision was for the benefit of the club they’d be shouting their strategy from the rooftops, or do they honestly think THEY are the club ?

  13. lenny says hoopers for the off, if your surprised I’ am amazed. btw hooper was part of that 6-2 defeat the other night and was piss poor, for all those telling us he pure class, he wants to leave and on that basis i’d get short of him as well. pre-season is non-competitive events where players and teams are makeshift. there have been several positives from the tour:

fitness and sharpness of players improved

    foster looking good

    vigil looks a player

    rogic showed up well

    Irvine showed up well

as did the right back (cant recall his name)

am all for improving the squad, but if these bhoys and I am sure others are to progress they need to be given as much opportunities within a celtic team that closer resembles a first 11. if hooper leaves we are little to light up top so get a centre forward in and i’ll be happy.

Give me £10k a week. Pay my expenses when I go away from home with my work and ill take 3 weeks off a year..

Oh and ill take time off because I have a slight strain…full wages of course..

My heart is bleeding for those poor football players…

Do you seriously believe that we are not making any effort to bring players in ??? I dont think it will have come as a surprise to anyone at Celtic Park that Wanyama has left, there is no question that we will be pursuing players that the MSM know nothing about…….we will wait and see how it turns out but it is not crucial to have replacements in before the Cliftonville games.

We live in a period of 24 hour sports channels and where football generates more interest than people getting slaughtered all over the planet.

As a result of the media obsession PR was incorporated into the job description of the modern football manager about 10-15 years ago.

Defending bad behaviour from players, speaking positively about bad results, denying speculation and most importantly giving guarded answers in interviews has become the norm. What passes as news is simply press releases from clubs – because the press no longer have the access they once enjoyed.

These guys have a microphone thrust in front of their faces and are asked the most banal questions as part of their daily routine. And most of them have become adept at giving answers that amount to nothing.

All managers do it. Try listening or reading what any of them have to say. And take it all with a pinch of salt.

  26. Summa..,

I’m going to break a habit and jump into sids gripe, you say spend money we don’t have and refer to the Vic transfer, I had a long drawn out discussion yesterday about “ring-fencing” resources, we made a few bob in Europe last season, why should the manager (who was responsible for our euro success) have to wait on income from transfers ?

  27. There are four pages of comments on here since 6 O’clock this morning, it’s almost 28* get out and enjoy yourselves and forget about the pre season results, Celtic will come good. HH

  28. Not having witnessed the per season matches I cannot comment on them.

Having no access to the Celtic boardroom, or to Peter Lawwell’s mindset, the Celtic management strategy, I cannot offer much comment on e.g. Our current transfer policy.

Not being a devotee of the MSM, more a conscientious avoider to any cognisance of the nonsense, I refuse to acknowledge their utterances.

I do however believe the board are there to represent us and that they have appointed personnel, NFL et al, to manage the club in such a way as to bring success to my club.

I acknowledge one’s right to offer alternative opinions, so long as one allows me to support my club in the manner I see fitting.

Obviously I wish we had won all our per season matches, big Vic and Hoops stayed to fight the good fight and we were not currently undergoing an injury crisis, but we are not.

So get by Cliftonville and enjoy flag day/evening and support the club.

“And we don’t know How Southampton are Paying..l doubt it was COD..Maybe that is why it took so Long..”

The quotes below from the Southampton manager seemed to indicate the agent was the reason for the deal taking so long.

Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino said: “I want to stress that the deal could have been done sooner, but this shows that we do business on our terms. The most important thing that ourselves, Celtic and the player are all happy with the way it has all gone.”

    Kayal 33,

I think your team is pretty spot on , except that Kayal will play instead of Rogic.

The reason I say that is Rogic played the full 90 last night, and if he was going to start, he would have pulled him after 65 / 70 (IMHO)
